LAFC loses Olivier Giroud's farewell match, falling 1-0 to Vancouver Whitecaps

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Emmanuel Sabbi scored on Vancouver's only shot on goal, Yohei Takaoka made four saves and the Whitecaps spoiled Olivier Giroud's farewell match with a 1-0 victory over Los Angeles FC on Sunday night.
Giroud started and played 60 minutes in his final appearance for LAFC. The famed French forward is expected to sign with Lille after one disappointing year in Los Angeles during which he was largely an unproductive substitute, scoring just five goals in 38 matches.
Giroud had a chance to go out with a bang when Denis Bouanga fed him an exceptional cross while he was unmarked deep in Vancouver's penalty area in the 50th minute, but Giroud volleyed it over the bar.
Giroud still left the field to a standing ovation 10 minutes later, but LAFC failed to equalize without him in its first match back from a winless three-game stint at the Club World Cup.
LAFC scored one goal in the entire FIFA tournament, but still netted at least $9.5 million for earning the final spot in the field. Back in Los Angeles, its nine-match unbeaten run in league play ended with even more offensive frustration against Vancouver.
Takaoka secured his 10th clean sheet for the depleted Whitecaps, who won for just the second time in six matches while falling out of first place in the Western Conference. Vancouver doesn't have key contributors Brian White, Jayden Nelson and Sebastian Berhalter due to Gold Cup international duty.
Sabbi scored in the 20th minute with an exceptional effort, starting a counterattack with a midfield steal before controlling Jeevan Badwal's pass in midair on the run and scoring his first goal since April 12.
Backup goalkeeper David Ochoa made his first appearance for LAFC in place of Hugo Lloris, who got the day off after playing the entire Club World Cup.

Phillies slugger Bryce Harper is reinstated after injured list stint with sore wrist

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Phillies slugger Bryce Harper was reinstated Monday ahead of Philadelphia's opener against San Diego after a stint on the injured list with right wrist inflammation. Harper went on the 10-day injured list on June 6. The two-time National League MVP and eight-time All-Star is hitting .258 with nine home runs, 34 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 57 games. He also missed five games, from May 26 to June 2, with a bruised right elbow after being hit by a pitch from Atlanta's Spencer Strider. Harper said when he went on the IL that he felt pain in the wrist during a large portion of last season, when he hit 30 homers while helping the Phillies win the NL East. The Phillies entered Monday's game in first place in the division. They are 13-14 overall this season without Harper in the lineup. To make room on the 26-man roster, infielder Buddy Kennedy was designated for assignment. ___ AP MLB:

Vancouver Canucks sign four depth players to new deals

VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Canucks have signed four depth players to new deals after they helped the club's minor league affiliate to a championship title. Vancouver announced Monday that forwards Arshdeep Bains and Aatu Raty have inked two-year deals, while defenceman Guillaume Brisebois and forward Max Sasson signed one-year contracts. All four players spent much of last season with the Abbotsford Canucks in the American Hockey League and helped the team capture its first Calder Cup on June 19. Vancouver also announced Monday that it has extended qualifying offers to defenceman Jett Woo and goalie Nikita Tolopilo, who are both set to become restricted free agents Tuesday. The Canucks did not qualify defencemen Cole McWard and Christian Felton, or left-wingers Tristen Nielsen and Ty Glover. The NHL's free agency period will open at 12 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Bains played 13 games for the Vancouver Canucks in the 2024-25 campaign and scored his first NHL goal against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 26. The 24-year-old winger from Surrey, B.C., also put up 43 points (11 goals, 32 assists) in 50 regular-season games for Abbotsford. Raty saw action in 33 games for Vancouver last season, contributing seven goals and four assists. The 22-year-old Finnish centre put up another 40 points (17 goals, 23 assists) in 43 regular-season appearances with Abbotsford. Including his NHL debut on Nov. 23, Sasson logged 29 games with Vancouver, and put up three goals and four assists. Maple Leafs make intriguing move with trade for Matias Maccelli

Article content The Leafs must be hopeful that Maccelli, who turns 25 on Oct. 14, can find the playmaking touch he had two seasons ago in the Utah franchise's last year in Arizona. With the Coyotes in 2023-24, Maccelli scored 17 goals and had 40 assists for a career-high 57 points in 82 games. In 2024-25, Maccelli couldn't get into a rhythm and frequently was a healthy scratch as the season wound down, playing in just three of Utah's final 26 games. In 55 games, the native of Turku, Finland scored eight goals and recorded 10 assists. At 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, Maccelli doesn't necessarily fit what Leafs coach Craig Berube likes in his forwards. It's an intriguing move on the part of Toronto. Maccelli has one year remaining on his contract with an average annual value of $3.425 million US and he will be a restricted free agent next year. With Maccelli on the roster, Leafs general manager Brad Treliving now has approximately $10.1 million remaining under the cap to make further additions with National Hockey League free agency opening on Tuesday. There was the expectation on Monday that the Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights continued to work on a trade that would send Marner's rights to the Western Conference club.
