Champions League riches within touch for Rangers - so why the concern?

Seeing their heroes join the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, the cream of the continental game, will be uplifting and exciting for supporters of the Glasgow giants in equal measure. They have only mixed it in that illustrious company once in the past 15 years.
Their directors, too, will raise a large glass of their favourite tipple if they manage to overcome Club Brugge of Belgium over two legs as the achievement will improve their financial predicament considerably. It would be worth tens of millions to them regardless of how they fare. For a new regime which has only been in situ for a matter of months, it would be a significant fillip.

Would Rangers supporters, though, trade more European success for elusive domestic glory? Would they forego the chance to see their side in action against top English, French, German, Italian and Spanish opposition in the coming months if they knew they would be toasting a Scottish title triumph come May? Would they give it up to get the better of Celtic in the Premiership?
The likelihood is, after four years of abject failure on the home front, many of them, as much as they have enjoyed seeing James Tavernier and his team mates defy expectations in the Europa League in recent seasons, would prefer top flight dominance this term.
The Govan outfit, who took to the field in the Doosan Arena protecting a comfortable three goal lead following a resounding victory last week, were not quite at their best last night. They rode their luck a little against mediocre rivals before allowing, after a calamitous slip by left-back Jefte, Rafiu Duosinmi to put the hosts ahead four minutes before half-time.
Rangers still threatened going forward on occasion and drew level on the hour mark when Lyall Cameron, who has impressed onlookers greatly every time he has donned a light blue jersey, opened his account for the club he joined from Dundee in the summer following a slick attacking move.
Svetozar Markovic restored the Viktoria lead with seven minutes of regulation time remaining. But it ultimately proved to be too little too late.
(Image: Getty Images) There remains considerable room for improvement. Defensively, they were unconvincing. Their goalkeeper Jack Butland once again came to their rescue on more than one occasion. But nobody could begrudge the visitors the 4-2 aggregate result. Job done, onwards and upwards.
Still, the accomplishment begged a question? Why can't they make such light work of lesser opponents in their own country? Their repeated inability to see off domestic adversaries who they should defeat comfortably continues to frustrate and baffle their fans.
Rangers have, despite not winning the Premiership since back in 2021, done pretty well against Celtic of late. They probably had the better of their encounters during the 2024/25 campaign. But against the likes of Aberdeen, Dundee, Dundee United, Hibernian, Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Ross County and St Mirren, they have repeatedly been found wanting.
This season they have beaten Panathinaikos of Greece and Viktoria Plzen of Czechia in the Champions League and been held to draws by Motherwell away at Fir Park and Dundee – who had lost to Airdrie and Alloa in the Premier Sports Cup group stages – at home at Ibrox in the Premiership. They are already four points behind the defending champions and it is still only August.
So what is the reason for their repeated failings? It is pretty simple really. They have to learn how to break down teams which sit back, defend in numbers and seek to score on the counter. They fare far better against sides which like to get on the front foot and come at them. But that is a major issue in their ain midden.

Martin, the former MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton manager, was considered particularly adept at dealing with a low block during his time down south. The one-time centre-half hasn't shown much evidence of that since returning to his adopted homeland in June. He will have to start exhibiting that he possesses a tactical nous soon or he will suffer the same fate as his predecessors Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Michael Beale and Philippe Clement.
(Image: Getty Images) No fewer than 10 new players have arrived in another close season of frantic transfer activity. The summer recruits will take time to settle into their new surroundings. The manager must also be given games to implement his ideas. But he will find that patience is a quality which is in short supply if more draws and defeats are suffered. His players will have to raise their games considerably to see off a formidable Brugge side.
Much is being made of the opening Old Firm game of the season at Ibrox on August 31. If Rangers lose it then they will be playing catch-up and then some. But their forthcoming fixtures against Alloa at home and St Mirren away might well be even more important for them than that derby encounter.

Glenn Hoddle names 'team to beat' in Champions League and snubs PSG

Glenn Hoddle has named the 'team to beat' in the Champions League and overlooked holders Paris Saint-Germain. PSG clinched their first ever Champions League trophy last season, thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in the final. The French champions secured more silverware on Wednesday night as they came from two goals down against Tottenham to win the UEFA Super Cup. Thomas Frank looked set for an immediate trophy at the start of his Spurs tenure after Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero scored either side of half-time. But Lee Kang-in gave PSG hope with an 85th-minute goal and Goncalo Ramos' 95th-minute equaliser forced a penalty shootout. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. Luis Enrique's side held their nerve in the shootout to give PSG their first Super Cup trophy and deny Spurs a second European trophy in three months. PSG also impressed in the Club World Cup over the summer – losing to Chelsea in the final – and appear to be the favourites to win the Champions League this season. Hoddle insists PSG under Enrique are a 'serious team' but views Liverpool as the 'team to beat' in Europe, especially if Arne Slot gets a couple more transfer signings over the line. The Premier League champions have spent £250m so far this summer and remain interested in big-money moves for Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi. Asked who will emerge as PSG's biggest rival for the Champions League trophy this season, Hoddle told TNT Sports: 'For me, we're all hearing the same thing about Liverpool in the transfer market. 'If those deals so happen, wow, they will have some squad. So I would say Liverpool might be the ones to beat. 'If they get who they're tying to get, I think they will go very close in Europe. They're a very good sign now, never mind about the new signings. 'PSG are a serious team though and really well-balanced. That's why they will be one of the favourites to go back and win it but in any sport, winning a title is one thing but retaining it is very, very difficult.' Ex-England star Karen Carney, meanwhile, declared Barcelona as PSG's biggest rival in the Champions League. The La Liga champions reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season before losing to Inter Milan in heartbreaking circumstances. 'Barcelona's Achilles heel was just the defensive mindset last season but going forward they had absolutely everything,' she said. 'PSG will respect that and Barcelona could push them. PSG are full of quality, they're only just come back from their summer break. 'They're the ones to beat for me. It would be great if the English teams can bridge the gap but I still have my eye on that Barcelona team because if they sort out the defence they could push these guys.' Despite watching his Tottenham team concede two late goals and then lose the penalty shootout, Frank was able to take a number of positives from the Super Cup defeat. The former Brentford boss took over at Spurs earlier in the summer after the sacking of Ange Postecoglou. 'I think we played a very good game against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best at this moment in time,' Frank said. 'We had them exactly where we wanted them for 80-something minutes until the 2-1 goal, then of course the momentum shifted a little bit. More Trending 'The team, the players, the club, the fans, there is a lot to be happy with. It is a flip of the coin when you go to a penalty shootout. 'We showed that we can be adaptable and pragmatic, and we needed to be against a team like PSG. 'The way we wanted to defend, high pressure and low defending, was top, almost perfect, and also the set pieces were very good and dangerous.' Spurs face Burnley in their Premier League opener on Saturday while PSG begin their Ligue 1 title defence a day later against Nantes. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Celtic vs Falkirk: Premier Sports Cup action returns to Parkhead as Rodgers aims to continue perfect start

SCOTT BAIN was in the Celtic dugout the last time these two teams clashed in the competition 11 months ago - at the quarter-final stage. But this week the former Celtic goalkeeper could take on his old team-mates at his old shooting ground at Parkhead - in the Premier Sports Cup last 16. 2 Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers Credit: PA 2 Falkirk boss John McGlynn Credit: Kenny Ramsay Celtic host John McGlynn's side in their first domestic cup fixture after receiving a bye to miss the group stage and progress straight to the knockout round. Both sides faced off at the same stadium last September, but Falkirk were in the Championship at that point. Now this is set to be the first of at least four meetings between the two sides after the Bairns won the second tier last season. The last meeting of course ended in a victory for Celts as Brendan Rodgers' men went on to lift the trophy following a penalty shootout win over Rangers at Hampden in December. But while the quarter-final meeting ended in a 5-2 win for the Hoops, it wasn't quite as comfortable as the scoreline suggests. It was actually Falkirk who raced in front TWICE in that tie, having initially taken the lead through Ross MacIver after 11 minutes. Finn Yeats then ensured they held onto their lead at half-time with a stoppage time goal after Paulo Bernardo's equaliser. A brace from Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah in the second half guaranteed the win, though, and the first half scares were quickly forgotten about. But can McGlynn's side stun the Hoops again and get the job done come full-time on Friday? SunSport has all the details ahead of the cup cracker. Alternatively, you can follow all the action right here via SunSport's LIVE blog. Team news Jota remains the only long-term absentee for Celtic which sees Rodgers having a full squad aside from him at his disposal for this game. Kieran Tierney will be available for selection despite the manager revealing he was SICK at half-time of the 2-0 win against Pittodrie. There could be a place in the matchday squad for the first time for new signing Jahmai Simpson-Pusey after he was left out against Aberdeen. Shin Yamada could make his first start after looking promising off the bench in the second half in the Granite City. Falkirk, meanwhile, will likely be without star man Ethan Ross after he suffered a nasty ankle injury against Livingston. Other players expected to be missing for the Bairns include Finn Yeats, Tom Lang, Coll Donaldson and Barney Stewart. Ketel Marte's late homer propels Diamondbacks to series win over Rangers

August 13 - Ketel Marte ripped a two-out, three-run home run in the ninth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to stun the Texas Rangers 6-4 on Wednesday in the finale of a three-game series in Arlington, Texas. Marte's home run off Phil Maton (2-4) was his fourth hit of the game and drove in Blaze Alexander (who was hit by a pitch) and Geraldo Perdomo, who had walked. James McCann began the rally with a two-out solo home run as the Diamondbacks scored four runs with two outs in the final frame to capture their second straight series. It was Marte's second game-winning homer in as many nights. He homered in the ninth on Tuesday as well to lift Arizona to a 3-2 comeback win. John Curtiss (2-0) pitched the eighth for the Diamondbacks and Andrew Saalfrank retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to earn his first career save. Texas dropped the final two games of this set and finished its nine-game homestand with just three victories. Jake Burger had a two-run home run among his two hits while Evan Carter also had two of the Rangers' seven hits. Texas jumped to the lead in its first at bat when Carter, who was activated from the 10-day injured list just prior to the game, singled home Josh Smith after he opened the frame with a single. The Diamondbacks answered in the third with a two-out rally as Perdomo walked and stole second base before Marte drove him in with a single to left field that tied the game at 1-1. Carter was also a huge part of the Rangers' next uprising, beginning the fourth with a double and then trotting home in front of Burger after the latter smashed his two-run homer. Arizona trimmed its deficit to 3-2 in the fifth on a Perdomo solo home run to right center field. The Diamondbacks pushed to tie the game in the inning as Marte and Corbin Carroll singled, but Marte was thrown out at home on Adrian Del Castillo's single to right to end the inning. After that, the Diamondbacks did not have a hit and had just one baserunner until McCann homered with two outs in the ninth to cut the Texas lead to one run. That opened the floodgates and led to Arizona's stunning win. -Field Level Media
