Bahrain's Bounceback Sends Egypt Crashing

TDT | Manama
Bahrain's 91–85 win over Egypt last night was a jolt through the Championship. After two straight defeats and with their title hopes wobbling, the hosts stepped onto the court at Khalifa Sports City seeking rejuvenation, and got just that. They sent shockwaves by toppling the unbeaten, defending champions in front of the watching eye of HH Shaikh Isa bin Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa. Ali Hussain sealed it with a composed layup in the final seconds, before Egypt's desperate midcourt heave missed wide at the buzzer.
Mustafa's Moment
Mustafa Hussain was unplayable again, pouring in 27 points and earning man-of-the-match honours. While JaKarr Sampson extended his 20+ point streak with 28 more, it was Hussain's shot-making and floor control that tilted the game Bahrain's way. They edged the first quarter 28–25, matched Egypt 25–25 in the second, edged the third (13–11), and pulled away late with a 27–22 final frame.
Egypt Exposed
Briefly Mazen Mohamed and Ebrahim Amin combined for 36 points, and Mohamed Ashraf grabbed 10 rebounds, but Egypt's rotations never fully clicked. Despite Amin's 9 assists, Bahrain punished late lapses, with Wayne Chism's blocks and second-chance plays proving decisive.
Algeria Stay Perfect
Algeria beat Qatar 92–66, led by man of the match Ben Zaim Sid (21 points, 11 rebounds). Sofiane Briki added 17, as Algeria's fast start set the tone. Qatar's Janik (19 pts) and Moosa (17) impressed, but couldn't contain the pace.
Tunisia on the Climb
Tunisia pipped the UAE 78–70, with Omar Abada scoring 18 and man of the match Yacine Toumi adding 14 points and two blocks. Despite 27 from Dickerson, Tunisia held firm. Toumi called the American guard 'a great player' and added, 'UAE are no pushover — they beat Bahrain. Every match is a final,' as Tunisia prepares to face Egypt tonight.
Qatar face UAE (4PM), Kuwait meet Algeria (6PM), and Egypt take on Tunisia (8PM). Bahrain rest today and tomorrow before facing Algeria on Friday at 8PM.

Zverev Secures 500th Career Win in Toronto

Email : editor@ Zverev Secures 500th Career Win in Toronto • Top seed outlasts Arnaldi in tough three-setter • Michelsen stuns Musetti • Ruud avenges Roland Garros loss • Khachanov advances in three sets Top seed Alexander Zverev celebrated a major career milestone on Thursday, notching his 500th ATP match victory with a gritty comeback win over Matteo Arnaldi at the Toronto Masters. The 27-year-old German recovered after dropping the first set to defeat Arnaldi 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-2, powering into the tournament's fourth round. Zverev now joins an elite group of active players with 500 career wins — a list that includes Novak Djokovic, Marin Cilic, Gaël Monfils, and Stan Wawrinka. Notably, he achieved the feat younger than all but Djokovic. 'It's a great achievement,' said Zverev, a 24-time ATP title winner. 'Not a lot of players reach this milestone — but I still want 500 more, maybe even more!' The German showed improvement throughout the match, especially from the baseline, and closed it out on his second match point. He will next face Francisco Cerundolo, who beat Tomas Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4. Michelsen shocks Musetti Alex Michelsen, ranked 26th, stunned third-seeded Lorenzo Musetti in a thriller, winning 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 to reach his first Masters 1000 fourth round. Despite hitting nearly 50 unforced errors and converting only 2 of 9 break chances, the 20-year-old American held his nerve and capitalized on his seventh match point. 'It feels really good,' Michelsen said. 'I've put in a lot of hard work, and I guess it's starting to pay off.' He next faces fellow American Learner Tien, who beat Reilly Opelka 7-6 (7/3), 6-3. Ruud gets revenge Eighth seed Casper Ruud came from behind to beat Portugal's Nuno Borges 7-5, 6-4 in only his fourth match since missing Wimbledon due to injury. After trailing 1-4 in the first set, Ruud broke back and gradually took control. 'I just crawled into the first set,' Ruud said. 'One break and things can happen. I raised my return game and served my way through.' Ruud, who lost to Borges at the French Open earlier this year, said it was 'nice to get my revenge.' He will next meet Karen Khachanov, the 11th seed, who rallied past American qualifier Emilio Nava 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 6-1 to make his second Masters round of 16 appearance this season.

Asian Youth Games to Launch Indoors at EWB

TDT | Manama The third Asian Youth Games (AYG), set to be held in Bahrain later this year, will officially open on October 22 with a landmark indoor ceremony at Exhibition World Bahrain (EWB) in Sakhir. This is the first time the AYG opening event will be held inside a venue, diverging from the outdoor traditions of the editions in Singapore (2009) and Nanjing, China (2013). Over 4,000 Athletes Expected Held under the royal patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, this year's AYG will welcome more than 4,000 athletes, boys and girls aged 14 to 18, from 45 National Olympic Committees. It will also serve as a qualification platform for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal. EWB to Present Bahrain The chosen venue, EWB, is one of the Middle East's newest and largest exhibition centres, inaugurated in late 2022. Spanning 149,000 square metres, it includes a main hall with seating for 4,000 and modern facilities designed to host high-profile international events. Organisers promise a unique ceremony featuring performances that reflect Bahraini identity and hospitality, with more details to be revealed in the lead-up to the Games. Sports and Scheduling A total of 24 sports have been approved by the Olympic Council of Asia and the AYG organising committee, ranging from traditional disciplines like athletics and swimming to emerging events such as E-sports and camel racing. Seven sports will begin before the opening ceremony—boys' futsal, handball, and volleyball start October 19, while girls' futsal, kabaddi, teqball, and beach volleyball begin October 21. The Games will conclude on October 31 with swimming finals and the official closing ceremony.

Højlund Inspires as Amorim's System Takes Shape

TDT | Manama Manchester United beat Bournemouth 4-1 in the Premier League Summer Series at Soldier Field, with Rasmus Højlund scoring inside eight minutes to set the tone. Patrick Dorgu added a second in the first half, before Amad Diallo and substitute Ethan Williams capped off an encouraging performance in the second. Controlled Performance Despite the absence of new signings Matheus Cunha (rested due to fatigue) and Bryan Mbeumo, United delivered a cohesive display in humid conditions, showing intensity and control throughout. Højlund's movement and link-up play stood out, while Dorgu and Diallo offered consistent attacking outlets in wide areas. Ethan Williams scored within a minute of coming on, finishing off a sweeping move. Bournemouth pulled one back late on via an own goal from Matthijs de Ligt, who inadvertently diverted a cross past goalkeeper Tom Heaton in the 88th minute. But the scoreline fairly reflected United's dominance, with Ruben Amorim's team looking sharper and more structured than in previous outings. Signs of Progress Head coach Ruben Amorim praised the team's intensity, noting improved possession and pressing. He highlighted Højlund's hold-up play and overall influence as key to the side's rhythm, saying 'we are playing better because he's playing better.' The result builds on United's 2–1 win over West Ham earlier in the competition. A win in their final game against Everton would hand United the Summer Series title, and offer further evidence that Amorim's system is beginning to take hold.
