The German, a former assistant manager to Ralph Hasenhuttl at St. Mary's, has interest from his home country which could prove more attractive than a Championship job.
Saints were reluctant to be left waiting and moved quickly to land Still, who has also managed Reims in Ligue 1 as well as Lierse and Beerschot in Belgium.
Lens are not owed any compensation should Still leave, though the same cannot be said for his coaching staff, which include brothers Edward and Nicolas.
Talks over compensation for his coaching staff are ongoing and remain the only sticking point before the appointment can be confirmed.

Saints have endured a horror season following promotion from the Championship last year.
Russell Martin, who guided them back to the top flight, was sacked in December while his replacement, Ivan Juric, was axed once relegation was confirmed.
Adam Lallana reflects on going back to his boyhood club Southampton
Interim boss Simon Rusk has taken charge since then and managed to get the club past Derby's all-time low points record of 11.
They will, however, take some unwelcome records back to the Championship, becoming the first club to be relegated with seven games of a season left to be played.

Maeda helps much-changed Celts cruise past Falkirk into League Cup quarter-finals
Scottish League Cup: Celtic 4 Falkirk 1 Dane Murray celebrated his new contract with his first Celtic goal as the holders beat Falkirk 4-1 in the Premier Sports Cup. The 22-year-old defender headed home Celtic's third goal of the second-round clash at Parkhead. Murray, who has already overcome two separate cruciate ligament injuries in his career, earlier signed a new deal that keeps him at the club until 2028. Daizen Maeda and Alistair Johnston were also on target and Falkirk defender Liam Henderson put through his own net before Keelan Adams scored an impressive consolation goal for the Premiership newcomers. Centre-back Murray was one of six players coming into the Celtic line-up alongside goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo, Auston Trusty, Arne Engels and Johnny Kenny. The Hoops beat then Championship side Falkirk 5-2 on their way to winning last season's tournament and this was another open encounter with both sides creating chances in the first half. Kenny volleyed wide early on after James Forrest's lay-off and former Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain saved long-range strikes from Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney before scrambling to meet Henderson's wayward passback, which just went wide. Ross MacIver dragged a shot wide at the other end after a loose pass from Murray. The breakthrough came in the 26th minute after McGregor returned the ball into the box following a corner. Tierney ran on to meet the cross and nodded the ball down for Maeda to score with a diving header. There were further chances at each end before the break. Sinisalo saved brilliantly from Calvin Miller's 25-yard strike before denying Alfredo Agyeman and MacIver. Engels and Forrest missed close-range headers at the other end. Celtic were more dominant after the break and doubled their lead in the 54th minute after Falkirk lost possession from a throw-in. Johnston chased down Miller as the former Celtic player headed back towards his own goal and the right-back won the ball before curling into the far corner with his left foot. Murray got his big moment in the 61st minute when he headed home from an inswinging corner from Engels. Celtic went further ahead three minutes later as Yang Hyun-jun made an instant impact after coming on with home debutant Shin Yamada. The South Korean winger ran past two opponents after Celtic won the ball back deep in the Bairns half, and his low ball across the goalmouth was turned into his own net by Henderson. The noisy visiting fans got a chance to celebrate three minutes later when right-back Adams arrowed a shot into the top corner from 20 yards. That ended the flurry of goals as Celtic safely navigated their way into Saturday evening's quarter-final draw and avoided any injuries ahead of their Champions League play-off first leg against Kairat Almaty on Wednesday. Celtic: Sinisalo, Johnston, Murray, Trusty, Tierney (Scales 63), Forrest (Nygren 77), Engels (Bernardo 77), McGregor, McCowan, Maeda (Yang 63), Kenny (Yamada 63). Roy Keane 'put a marker down' after fellow cruise guests harassed female DJ
Roy Keane has told how he needed to '"lay down a marker" after a group of passengers began harassing a female DJ while on a holiday cruise this summer. Keane was appearing on the first episode of the new season of Stick to Football, and when asked by Jill Scott how he enjoyed his break, Keane revealed that he was almost called into action while on a cruise with his wife Theresa. "I've had a great summer. No tournaments, bit of a break. I went on a cruise and really enjoyed that. "I did (get annoyed on) the first night. I put a marker down on the first night to a few people. They weren't coming up to me but they were just being rude to other people. "They were just being rude to other people, rude to the woman playing the music and getting aggro with her and I stepped in. Listen lads calm down, this is a nice boat remember. "But these lads, about four of them who were about the same age as me, maybe a bit older, they were being really rude to this woman DJ and manhandling her. "And I just went over to them and went, 'Lads just calm down,' so I sat down and four of them came across ready to… 'But no I didn't have them, it didn't kick off but it was pretty close." When Gary Neville remarked that it sounded like Keane was ready for the new season, the Corkman replied in jest saying: "It's like a pre-season game, Charity Shield, studs down the back of somebody. "They were still annoying the rest of the week but I kept my distance. "A few nights later I saw them having a few words with this other guy. "I went over to support him a little bit, but it wasn't as bad as I'm kind of making out." Away from the cruise, Keane looked as though he had a wonderful summer. Last week, he shared a series of photos on his Instagram account of him spending his 54th birthday on holidays surrounded by his children and grandchildren. The Manchester United legend is gearing up for another season as a pundit with Sky Sports, but his family life is also about to get much busier as his daughter, Leah, announced this week that she was expecting a baby with her fiancée, England international and Southampton ace Taylor Harwood Bellis. Keane's third grandchild, a baby boy, was born in April. To celebrate his arrival, Keane posted an adorable snap of the pair on Instagram with the caption "My new grandson, big baby," in reference to one of his most memorable punditry moments.

Flick keeps faith in Barcelona amid registration status of Rashford and co.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick remains confident his club will register key players including new signings Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford in time for Saturday's LaLiga opener at Mallorca, despite ongoing financial fair play complications. The Spanish champions are still scrambling to register players due to LaLiga's strict financial rules, having spent more on signings and wages than they have generated in revenue for multiple seasons. "For me, the situation, you can imagine I'm not happy about that. But I know the situation and I believe in the club," Flick told reporters on Friday. "We have to wait till tomorrow. It was the same situation last season. "We will focus on what we can change and what is in our hands. The other things, I believe in the club." Barcelona signed goalkeeper Garcia from local rivals Espanyol in June while Wojciech Szczesny has signed an extension, but neither player has been registered yet. The club's registration headache has been partly resolved through some dramatic internal manoeuvring involving captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The German keeper initially refused to sign a long-term medical leave agreement that would clear 80% of his wages and help the club comply with financial rules. Sidelined for at least three months due to surgery, he was stripped of his captaincy before it was reinstated when he eventually agreed to the deal. "I think the most important thing is that everyone speaks together. Marc and the club, they spoke," Flick said. "The most important thing for me, for Marc and the club is that he comes back. "He's shown for many years here that he's a fantastic goalkeeper and the important thing is that he comes back and is ready to play. We'll all help him, we're all on his side." The departure of 34-year-old defender Inigo Martinez to Saudi Arabia's Al-Nassr has also freed up crucial salary space, although Flick admitted mixed feelings about losing the veteran who was a mainstay in central defence. "I was a little bit surprised but I could totally understand him. I'm not happy that he left, he's a fantastic player and has a great personality," Flick said. "He was one of our leaders, he was outstanding not only as a player but also a personality in the dressing room. He deserves this and I wish him all the best." Despite the defensive reshuffle, Flick indicated he will not rush into the transfer market, backing the versatile 23-year-old Gerard Martin to step up. "Gerard can also play in this position. From what I've seen, I really appreciate that. Last season, as a left back, he was fantastic and improved a lot," he added. "When he played as centre back, he was doing well. He's a good option. I like players who can play in different positions." Reuters
