Here's what the 'no tax' provision actually means: Between now and 2028, car buyers may deduct the interest they pay on new car loans. The tax break goes away in 2029.
There are several caveats. Among them:
President Donald Trump tailored the tax break to reward automakers for building vehicles in America, and consumers for buying them.
Is the 'Big Beautiful' tax break a game-changer?
Is the new deduction big enough to change the dynamics of the car marketplace?
Probably not, experts say.
'It may very slightly privilege the vehicles that are built domestically,' said Sean Tucker, lead editor at Kelley Blue Book. 'But in the end, we don't think this will have too much of an impact. It's just not a big number, and it's not going to be around for a while.'
First of all, let's make this clear: The tax break is a deduction, not a credit.
Tax credits reduce how much tax you owe: A $10,000 tax credit lowers your tax bill by $10,000.
Tax deductions reduce your taxable income. If you're paying a 22% tax rate, a $10,000 deduction lowers your tax bill by $2,200.
'The $10,000 sounds really, really good, but the final number on the tax savings will be a surprise for a lot of taxpayers,' said Miklos Ringbauer, a CPA in Southern California.
In practice, few taxpayers are likely to ring up anywhere near $10,000 in deductible interest on a new-car loan, according to auto-industry experts.
Consumer Reports estimates the average buyer might save about $500 a year with the new tax break, 'which isn't nothing,' said Keith Barry, senior autos reporter. 'But the difference in cost between a new car and a used one could easily be in the thousands of dollars.'
A $23k price gap separates new and used cars
The average new car sold for $48,907 in June, according to Kelley Blue Book. The average used car listed for $25,512 in early July. The price difference works out to just over $23,000.
All else being equal, that figure – $23,000 – is how much you'd have to save from the new tax deduction to make a new car a better deal than a used one.
'We're finding that on the average loan now, the buyer's paying about $2,000 a year in interest,' Tucker said. The new tax break, he said, 'would save them about $400.'
With $400 in annual savings, it would take about 58 years to save $23,000 on a new car loan. Car loans are getting longer, but not that long.
Of course, there are good reasons why new cars cost more than used ones. A new car is likely to last longer than a used vehicle. New cars often have generous warranties. Repair costs rise with the age of the vehicle.
New car buyers pay a premium
Car buyers pay an inordinate premium for new vehicles. An old axiom holds that a new car loses $1,000 in value when you drive it off the lot.
That figure is hopelessly dated, given the rising cost of new cars. In fractional terms, new vehicles lose at least 10% of their value on the first day you own them, and 10% to 15% percent of value per year after that, according to Bankrate.
Another perk for new car buyers: New-car loans tend to carry lower interest rates than used-car loans. The average annual percentage rate in June was 10.9% for used vehicles, 7.3% for new ones, according to Edmunds.
Because borrowing costs are lower for new cars, a tax deduction on the interest might be less meaningful on those transactions, car experts say.
However, the tax break could prove useful for new-car buyers with lower credit scores, because they tend to pay higher interest rates.
'It actually helps the people in the most need,' said Ivan Drury, director of insights at Edmunds. 'If you are repairing your credit, if you have tarnished credit, if you have no credit, this stands to benefit you the most.'
How to determine if a car was 'made in USA'
Trump's new-car tax break may not be a game-changer, analysts say, but it could nudge some new-car buyers toward vehicles assembled in the United States.
Roughly half of new vehicles sold in the United States last month were manufactured in this country, Drury said.
To qualify for the deduction, a car or truck must have its 'final assembly' in the United States. That information is listed on a vehicle information label, generally affixed to the car window at the dealership. A federal VIN Decoder can also tell you where a vehicle was assembled.
Don't assume 'imports' are built in other countries. Many are assembled in U.S. plants. And many 'American' cars are assembled abroad.
If you walk into a new car showroom any time soon, the sales staff will probably have the information at their fingertips.
'Is the dealer going to talk this up?' Drury said. 'You'd better believe it.'

New Limits on Borrowing for Parents One of the biggest changes Orman talks about involves the Parent PLUS loan program. She points out that under the old rules, parents could borrow up to the full cost of their child's college attendance. But starting next July 1, the maximum borrowing will be capped at $20,000 per year and a lifetime total of $65,000 per student. And there's more: Parent PLUS loans taken after that date will no longer qualify for income-driven repayment plans. "I hate this one," Orman said. Instead, repayment will follow a standard plan with fixed payments over 10 to 25 years, regardless of income. Orman advises parents to be cautious before taking out these loans. "A standard repayment plan is a whole lot more, so parents, you better think twice before you just take out a loan," she said. Without income-driven options, monthly payments could be significantly higher. Interest Will Accumulate Differently for Students Orman also broke down the impacts of the new law for students borrowing undergrad loans. Previously, subsidized loans did not accrue interest while students were in school. Now, all undergraduate federal loans will be unsubsidized starting July 1. Interest will accumulate during school and, if unpaid, will be added to the loan balance. This will increase the total amount owed and lead to higher payments once repayment begins. "You might want to pay the interest on that loan yearly starting the very first year, because otherwise it's going to compound," Orman advised. Repayment Plans Get a Makeover The bill also changes repayment plans for all federal student loans taken after July 1. There will be two options: A standard repayment plan with fixed payments over 10 to 25 years. A new income-driven repayment plan called the Repayment Assistance Plan, or RAP, which ties payments to 1% to 10% of discretionary income. "But there will be no zero payment options," Orman clarified, explaining that although some current income-driven repayment plans allow borrowers to make zero payments based on financial need, this option will no longer be available starting next year. Additionally, loan forgiveness under RAP will only happen after 30 years of payments, five years longer than previous plans. Plus, economic hardship deferments will no longer be available starting July 1, 2027, though limited forbearance may still be possible for short periods. "Why do they want to be able to allow you to do that?" Orman asked. "Because student loans, still in most cases, are not dischargeable in bankruptcy, they can come after you. They can garnish your wages. They can even go after your Social Security check later on in life, and it's compounding and compounding, so you better be careful."Graduate Students Face New Borrowing Caps Graduate borrowing will also be limited. The Graduate PLUS loan program is ending, replaced by unsubsidized loans with annual limits of $20,500 for master's and PhD students and $50,000 for professional degrees, plus lifetime caps. These tighter limits could mean grad students must plan more carefully or look for alternative funding sources. What This Means for Families Orman's advice? Families need to start planning now. Parents should avoid risking their retirement savings by borrowing too much for college. Children should borrow federal loans first, since student loan interest rates are generally lower than Parent PLUS loans. More than ever, families should explore affordable schools, scholarships, and merit aid. The new rules add complexity to college financing, making it important for borrowers to carefully evaluate their options. Analysts Have Been Trimming Their The Trade Desk, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTD) Price Target After Its Latest Report
One of the biggest stories of last week was how The Trade Desk, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTD) shares plunged 37% in the week since its latest second-quarter results, closing yesterday at US$54.23. Results were roughly in line with estimates, with revenues of US$694m and statutory earnings per share of US$0.18. Following the result, the analysts have updated their earnings model, and it would be good to know whether they think there's been a strong change in the company's prospects, or if it's business as usual. So we collected the latest post-earnings statutory consensus estimates to see what could be in store for next year. Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit. Following the latest results, Trade Desk's 37 analysts are now forecasting revenues of US$2.86b in 2025. This would be a modest 6.9% improvement in revenue compared to the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are forecast to decrease 5.9% to US$0.80 in the same period. Yet prior to the latest earnings, the analysts had been anticipated revenues of US$2.86b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$0.84 in 2025. So it looks like there's been a small decline in overall sentiment after the recent results - there's been no major change to revenue estimates, but the analysts did make a minor downgrade to their earnings per share forecasts. View our latest analysis for Trade Desk It might be a surprise to learn that the consensus price target fell 5.7% to US$84.88, with the analysts clearly linking lower forecast earnings to the performance of the stock price. That's not the only conclusion we can draw from this data however, as some investors also like to consider the spread in estimates when evaluating analyst price targets. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Trade Desk at US$135 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$47.00. So we wouldn't be assigning too much credibility to analyst price targets in this case, because there are clearly some widely different views on what kind of performance this business can generate. As a result it might not be a great idea to make decisions based on the consensus price target, which is after all just an average of this wide range of estimates. These estimates are interesting, but it can be useful to paint some more broad strokes when seeing how forecasts compare, both to the Trade Desk's past performance and to peers in the same industry. We would highlight that Trade Desk's revenue growth is expected to slow, with the forecast 14% annualised growth rate until the end of 2025 being well below the historical 25% p.a. growth over the last five years. Juxtapose this against the other companies in the industry with analyst coverage, which are forecast to grow their revenues (in aggregate) 3.7% per year. So it's pretty clear that, while Trade Desk's revenue growth is expected to slow, it's still expected to grow faster than the industry itself. The Bottom Line The biggest concern is that the analysts reduced their earnings per share estimates, suggesting business headwinds could lay ahead for Trade Desk. Fortunately, they also reconfirmed their revenue numbers, suggesting that it's tracking in line with expectations. Additionally, our data suggests that revenue is expected to grow faster than the wider industry. The consensus price target fell measurably, with the analysts seemingly not reassured by the latest results, leading to a lower estimate of Trade Desk's future valuation. Keeping that in mind, we still think that the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for investors to consider. A day after Intel (INTC) stock slid more than 3% following political calls for his resignation, CEO Lip-Bu Tan publicly defended his record and emphasized his commitment to U.S. national security. The move indicates Tan is not stepping aside, despite pressure this week from U.S. President Donald Trump and Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton over Tan's past business ties to China.
