‘Scandalous' banner displayed by Maccabi Haifi soccer fans receives widespread condemnation from Polish officials

Polish president Karol Nawrocki has denounced a 'scandalous' banner displayed by a group of Israeli soccer fans at a UEFA Conference League qualifying match on Thursday.
Supporters of Israeli club Maccabi Haifa held a large banner reading 'murderers since 1939' close to the front of the stands and across a row of seats during the match against Raków Częstochowa in Debrecen, Hungary – an apparent reference to the Holocaust and the crimes committed by Nazi Germany.
On Friday, European soccer governing body UEFA announced that disciplinary proceedings have been instigated against Maccabi Haifa for 'transmitting a message not fit for (a) sports event.'
CNN Sports has contacted Maccabi Haifa for comment.
Germany invaded Poland in 1939, with more than three million Polish Jews and 1.9 million non-Jewish citizens killed during the Holocaust. Poland was the center of Ashkenazi Jewry before the Holocaust, but by the end of World War II, just 10% of the community remained.
Considerable research by historians has found that some Polish individuals and groups did collaborate with the Nazi occupiers.
'Individual Poles often helped in the identification, denunciation, and hunting down of Jews in hiding, often profiting from the associated blackmail, and actively participated in the plunder of Jewish property,' according to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.
However, recent Polish governments have sought to challenge that narrative of collaboration, and in 2018 passed a law making it illegal to accuse Poland of complicity in crimes committed by Nazi Germany, including the Holocaust.

'The scandalous banner displayed by fans of Maccabi Haifa insults the memory of Polish citizens – victims of World War Two, including 3 million Jews,' Nawrocki said in a post on X. 'Stupidity that no words can justify.'
Meanwhile, Poland's interior minister Marcin Kierwiński said on X that 'anti-Polonism and the outrageous distortion of Polish history by Israeli hooligans require strong condemnation. There is no, and will never be, agreement to such shameful practices.'
The Israeli Embassy in Warsaw also criticized the banner, photos of which have been widely shared on social media, describing it as 'disgusting behavior.'
'There is no place for such words and actions, from any side, neither at the stadium nor anywhere else. Never!' it said on X. 'These shameful incidents do not reflect the spirit of the majority of Israeli fans.'
CNN Sports has contacted the Nagyerdei Stadion in Hungary, where the match was held, regarding any intervention, including taking down the banner or ejecting the fans responsible.
Cezary Kulesza, the president of the Polish Football Association, previously called on UEFA to take disciplinary action following the 'scandalous banner and outrageous behavior,' adding in a post on X: 'There's no consensus for provocations and falsifying history.'
Raków Częstochowa won the match 2-0 to reach the playoff round of qualification for this year's Conference League after overcoming a 1-0 deficit from the first leg. The club will now face Bulgarian side Arda Kardzhali on August 21.

Leaked recording reveals ex-Israeli military intelligence chief calling 50,000 deaths in Gaza ‘necessary'

Jerusalem — In leaked audio, the former head of Israeli military intelligence can be heard saying the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza are 'necessary and required for future generations.' 'For everything that happened on October 7, for every one person on October 7, 50 Palestinians must die,' said Israel Defense Force's (IDF) Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva in the recordings released by Israel's Channel 12 news on Friday. 'It doesn't matter now if they are children.' 'The fact that there are already 50,000 dead in Gaza is necessary and required for future generations,' Haliva said in the recordings. It's unclear when he was speaking, but the number killed in Gaza surpassed 50,000 in March. 'There is no choice — every now and then, they need a Nakba in order to feel the price,' Haliva said. The Nakba, or 'catastrophe' in Arabic, is a seminal event in Palestinian history when roughly 700,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled from their homes by armed Jewish groups in 1948 during the establishment of the State of Israel. Haliva was head of Israeli military intelligence on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched attacks on southern Israel in which 1,200 people were killed and 250 more kidnapped. He resigned his position in April 2024 over his 'leadership responsibility,' becoming the first senior IDF officer to do so. The lengthy recordings appear to be from long conversations with Haliva, but Channel 12 does not identify the person with whom the retired officer is speaking. Haliva's central claim throughout the recordings is that the Israeli military is not the only organization responsible for the failures that led to the October 7 attacks. He places blame on Israel's political leadership and Shin Bet, the internal security service, for believing Hamas would not carry out an assault. In a statement to Israel's Channel 12, Haliva said the recordings were said in a 'closed forum, and I can only regret that.' Israeli soldiers organize military equipment while standing on armored personnel carriers near the border with the Gaza Strip, in Southern Israel on August called the recordings 'fragments of partial things, which cannot reflect the full picture — certainly when it comes to complex, detailed issues, most of which are highly classified.' Israel is facing mounting criticism over the war in Gaza and its new plans to occupy Gaza City. Last week, New Zealand's Prime Minister Christoper Luxon said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had 'lost the plot' and the takeover of Gaza City would be 'utterly, utterly unacceptable.' On Friday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in an interview with the Jyllands-Posten newspaper that 'Netanyahu is now a problem in himself.' In a statement, Hamas condemned Haliva's remarks and said the audio recording 'confirms that crimes against our people are high-level decisions and official policy from the enemy's political and security leadership.' A United Nations Special Committee report released last November found Israel's conduct in Gaza 'is consistent with the characteristics of genocide.' Last month, two Israeli human rights groups also accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. The Israeli military said the conclusion was 'entirely unfounded.' Israel has repeatedly denied accusations of genocide, saying it is acting in accordance with international law.

Egypt steps up Gaza aid efforts as war escalates, Israel faces mounting criticism

Egypt intensified its humanitarian role toward the Gaza Strip on Monday, as Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty visited the Rafah border crossing with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa and Egyptian Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsi. The visit marked the first by a Palestinian premier to the crossing. During the tour, Abdelatty said Egypt has provided more than 70% of all humanitarian aid that has entered Gaza since the Israeli war began in October 2023. He stressed that Rafah had never been closed, despite Israel's destruction of the Palestinian side of the crossing, and reaffirmed Cairo's efforts to push for a ceasefire, facilitate aid delivery, and treat the wounded in Egyptian hospitals. On one aid box sent through the Egyptian Red Crescent, Abdelatty wrote a message of solidarity: 'A message of love, solidarity and unity with our brothers in steadfast Gaza, from beloved Egypt – leadership, government and people.' Meanwhile, on the ground, Hamas's armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, released video footage showing explosives detonating against an Israeli bulldozer and ground troops in Jabalia, north of Gaza. The enclave's Health Ministry reported that 60 Palestinians were killed and 344 wounded in the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to over 62,000 and injuries to more than 156,000 since the war began—most of them women and children. International criticism of Israel also intensified. Lawmakers from Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales called on the UK government to impose sanctions on Israel and halt arms sales, accusing it of creating 'conditions for civilian starvation' in Gaza. Amnesty International charged that Israel was pursuing a deliberate starvation policy, citing testimonies from displaced Palestinians and medical workers treating malnourished children. Gaza's Government Media Office reported that only 1,937 aid trucks entered the enclave over 22 days, compared with the 13,200 required—less than 15% of needs. It accused Israel of enabling looting of much of the aid and continuing to obstruct flows, warning that Gaza requires more than 600 trucks daily to meet the minimum needs of its 2.4 million residents amid near-total infrastructure collapse. Inside Israel, political pressure mounted on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Opposition leader Yair Lapid accused him of sabotaging prisoner-swap negotiations with Hamas to preserve his coalition, echoing criticism from families of hostages. US President Donald Trump also weighed in, tying the release of Israeli captives in Gaza to the 'destruction' of Hamas. On his Truth Social platform, he claimed credit for freeing 'hundreds of hostages' in past deals, ending 'six wars in six months,' and 'blowing up Iran's nuclear facilities.' Meanwhile, Gaza health officials warned of a deepening medical crisis. Munir al-Barsh, director-general of the enclave's Health Ministry, said 70% of essential medicines were unavailable and anemia rates were soaring, with only two in ten people fit to donate blood. He welcomed the decision by UN agencies to maintain their presence in Gaza City despite escalating dangers.

Egyptian Sources: Proposal Includes 60-Day Truce in Gaza

Ahmed Emam Egyptian sources have outlined the main points of a proposal aimed at halting the conflict in Gaza for 60 days, AlQahera News reported on Monday. According to the sources, the initiative calls for a temporary cessation of military operations, alongside the redeployment of Israeli forces to areas near the border. The move is intended to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid in volumes that meet the needs of the population in Gaza. The proposal also includes an exchange of prisoners and captives. A number of Palestinian detainees would be released in return for half of the Israelis currently held in Gaza. In addition, the plan envisions the release of 10 Israeli hostages alive, as well as the transfer of 18 bodies — half the total of 36 Israelis reported dead. The sources added that negotiations on a broader agreement or permanent ceasefire would begin on the first day of the truce. Egypt has been playing a central role in mediation efforts, aiming to de-escalate the conflict and create conditions for a lasting settlement. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated
