Salesforce, PayPal COFOs tout agentic AI potential: Trial Balance

Robots aren't drafting up 10-Qs, 10-Ks or any other SEC filings for PayPal or Salesforce quite yet, but both companies are apparently betting big on a future driven by artificial intelligence tools.
In a roundtable discussion with reporters on Thursday, finance chiefs from the two firms spoke glowingly of the business potential of agentic AI tools, that is, artificial intelligence programs designed to make decisions autonomously with little or no human intervention.
Jamie Miller, chief financial and operating officer at PayPal, emphasized that, for now, her team is using AI agents to produce first drafts of internal content. That includes things like 'executive-level materials, where it's really summarization of a strategy,' she told reporters.
'We have not yet done, at least to my knowledge, AI-generated 10-Ks,' she said. 'I think we'll work our way to some form of assistance on that. … Within finance itself, there are lots of opportunities to leverage AI, and we see a lot of that internally.'
Robin Washington, who started her role as Salesforce's first chief operating and financial officer four months ago, said that she personally uses AI tools to prepare for analyst questions and to better understand competition. 'We are very much using [AI] to astutely understand the landscape,' she said. Washington added that artificial intelligence has helped cut down her prep work for earnings calls to 'hours instead of days.'
Though the discussion was mostly sparse on other concrete use cases for rank-and-file employees, both finance chiefs maintained that AI tools are set to fundamentally change the workforce, eventually.
'My boss always says we're probably the last set of managers to just manage humans,' Washington said. 'We're going to have AIs autonomously working side-by-side helping us make decisions.'
In an email, Salesforce spokesman Tyler Ng said that the company's 'Agentforce for Sales' program 'helps reps spend more time selling by letting AI handle routine tasks like lead follow-up and outreach around the clock.'
'Recently, the AI agent analyzed over 7,800 unworked leads — accounts with no rep outreach or activity — to prioritize high-intent prospects, personalize messaging and book 50+ meetings, generating $460K in net-new pipeline in just three weeks,' he said. 'The real power comes from AI and humans working together: while AI handles repetitive tasks, reps focus on building relationships and closing deals.'
And while big-ticket AI investments have coincided with recent layoff plans at several companies, such as Microsoft, the finance heads of Salesforce and PayPal emphasized that the emerging technology will instead reinforce the need for human skills. Washington cited things like 'problem-solving, emotional intelligence and higher-level decision making.'
'AI brings the data directly to us, and it enhances our ability to … do the art of the possible,' she said.
For her part, Miller emphasized the continued need for 'curiosity, systems thinking, self-starting' among employees.
'I was in a board meeting last week, and someone joked, 'sounds like it's the revenge of the liberal arts grad, finally,'' she said.
The two leaders' roundtable discussion coincided with the release of new survey data from Salesforce measuring CFO sentiment on AI. In a survey of 261 global finance chiefs, the company found that about a third have adopted an "aggressive' approach to the emerging technology. Just 4% said they have a 'conservative' AI strategy, and the lion's share of respondents (63%) said they're taking a moderate approach.
Conducted in June in partnership with Morning Consult, the survey also found that respondents, on average, are allocating about a quarter of their existing AI budgets specifically to AI agents.
Meanwhile, 61% of the CFOs said that 'AI agents/digital labor' are 'critical' to competition. The company 'defines digital labor as a hybrid workforce where humans and autonomous AI agents work together to accomplish more than either could on their own,' spokesman Ng said. In addition, about a third of respondents said that artificial intelligence 'requires them to have a riskier mindset around technology investments.'

'The challenge is the financial model is changing and and if anybody tells you that they know exactly what's going on, they're lying because they don't,' Chapman said. 'Everybody's trying to figure out how to build bridges to wherever it is that we're going to end up. And so that's what we're doing right now. I think that's what a lot of teams in professional [sports] are doing related to local regional sports networks,' Chapman said.
He continued: 'It is something that is at the forefront of what we're working on right now, but I've got to tell you, it's actually unbelievably interesting. It's unbelievably motivating to try to figure out how to take this to the next level because at the end of the day, you want to give the product to the fans.'

Key Points Oklo won some important Department of Energy contracts on Wednesday. It was far from the only nuclear company picking up DOE contracts, however. Investors are probably extra nervous today, however, over the risk of interest rates remaining high. 10 stocks we like better than Oklo › Shares of Oklo (NYSE: OKLO), one of a handful of start-up nuclear power companies benefiting from President Trump's May 2025 initiative to accelerate development of small modular reactors, fell more than 1% Wednesday, and are down another 6.1% through 11:45 a.m. ET Thursday morning. -- apparently on no particularly bad news. Worse, Oklo actually got good news (but not great news) yesterday that probably should have moved the stock higher. Instead, Oklo keeps falling. So what's up with that? What's up with Oklo going down? Yesterday, Oklo won three Department of Energy (DOE) "Reactor Pilot Program" contracts aiming to start up three small modular reactors by July 4, 2026. At first, this sounded like great news -- except that eight other companies won the same kind of contract. Apparently, Oklo's not in quite as exclusive company as first seemed, and has a smaller chance of winning future work than initially seemed the case. Oklo stock, which started Wednesday up on the DOE news, ended the day down -- and yesterday's pessimism seems to be continuing into today. Adding to the malaise is a Bureau of Labor Statistics report today that suggests inflation is speeding up again, which lessens the likelihood the Federal Reserve will be able to lower interest rates this year. Is it time to sell Oklo stock? Why are higher interest rates bad news for Oklo? Well, they aren't actually -- not immediately. Oklo's burning more than $50 million in cash annually, and may eventually have to take on debt to fund its operations, at which point, interest rates will be an issue. With more than $500 million in the bank, however, and near-zero debt, interest rates aren't really a concern to Oklo... yet. And I see no immediate need to sell the stock on interest rate concerns alone. Should you buy stock in Oklo right now? Bitcoin drops 3% after touching record highs as crypto rolls over

Bitcoin (BTC-USD) retreated more than 3% from its record highs on Thursday after hotter than expected inflation soured expectations of a large rate cut in September and after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaled the US won't be purchasing or selling its bitcoin reserve. On Wednesday, bitcoin touched an all-time high past $123,500 per token in anticipation of looser monetary policy and corporate purchases. Crypto rolled over after July's producer price index came in much higher than expected. During an interview with Fox Business this morning, Bessent said US reserves of bitcoin amount to around $15 billion or $20 billion at today's prices. "We've also started to get into the 21st century — a bitcoin strategic reserve. We're not going to be buying that, but we are going to use confiscated assets and continue to build that up. We're going to stop selling that," he said. Expectations of Fed rate cuts, coupled with heavy purchases from corporate treasurys, have driven up the price of the asset this year. The cryptocurrency has gained 25% year to date and has rallied roughly 57% since the April lows. Inflows into spot exchange-traded funds, along with purchases from public companies copying the blueprint of software firm-turned-bitcoin juggernaut Strategy (MSTR) by adding bitcoin to their balance sheets, have been key drivers of this year's token rally. Strategists also point to the Trump administration's pro-crypto stance as a major catalyst. "The administration is pushing crypto. They are pushing bitcoin. Bitcoin is the lead dog in the crypto market," Tom Essaye, founder of Sevens Report Research, told Yahoo Finance earlier this week. "So is it short-term a little frothy? Sure," he added. "But longer term, there are some fundamental changes here that I think are bullish for it, and we'll send it much higher in the future." Last week, President Trump issued an executive order directing the Labor Department to explore allowing 401(k) plans to hold cryptocurrencies and other alternative assets, a move that could significantly expand retail access to crypto. The price surge also comes as US equities have notched all-time records on expectations the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates in September, and that Trump's next Fed chair pick will likely favor looser monetary policy. Meanwhile, ethereum (ETH-USD) prices also retreated more than 3% on Thursday after rising to near record levels as Wall Street grows increasingly bullish on the world's second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap. Companies have been adding ether to their balance sheets as a way to gain exposure to the tech infrastructure behind decentralized finance and digital assets, such as stablecoins. This week, Bitmine Immersion Technologies (BMNR), an ethereum treasury company, announced plans to sell up to another $20 billion worth of stock to boost its holdings of the cryptocurrency. "We have stated multiple times we believe Ethereum is the biggest macro trade over the next 10-15 years," Fundstrat head of research Tom Lee, who also serves as chairman of Bitmine, wrote in a note Wednesday. Lee noted the majority of Wall Street crypto projects and stablecoins, or digital tokens backed by assets like the US dollar, are being built on the ethereum infrastructure. Ether, the native token of ethereum, is up more than 50% since the GENIUS Act legislation, which creates guardrails for the stablecoin industry, was passed last month. Additionally, the Securities and Exchange Commission's recent "Project Crypto" announcement, an initiative to modernize the agency and establish clear regulations around the digital asset industry, has also fueled the rally in ethereum. Government data is now in question. Here's where macro investors are turning to fill the gaps.

The firing of the BLS head by President Donald Trump has spooked some macro investors. Trump's nomination of a partisan economist may push investors to rely more heavily on other data. Sources like ADP, Homebase, and MIT's Billion Prices Project have become critical, traders say. No savvy investor makes a decision off a single data point, but there are some numbers that carry more weight than others. For many macro investors, the North Star has long been the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unit within the Department of Labor that measures, among other things, inflation, unemployment rates, and wage growth. Those in charge of the BLS have long been non-partisan economists, but President Donald Trump's firing of Commissioner Erika McEntarfer on August 1 and his top pick for her replacement, chief economist at the right-leaning Heritage Foundation, EJ Antoni, have many concerned with the validity of future government data, especially as Antoni floated pausing monthly jobs reports. It's concerning for macro traders who rely on this data to make their bets, but there are non-governmental data sources that many already use. While helpful, these alternative databases can't replicate the widespread foundation BLS numbers provided for decades, where all market participants worked for the same set of basic facts about the state of the world's biggest economy. Still, traders are ramping up their use of this data in light of Trump's moves. "What's going to be tricky here is how to judge numbers coming out of the Bureau of Labor Statistics moving forward," said Andreas Steno Larsen, onetime macro investor and researcher, on his weekly podcast. He compared the firing to something that would happen "in Latin America" and predicted that investors would "look for alternative sources" to get a second opinion on the official data. Four macro investors pointed to the well-known ADP jobs report, which comes out monthly and tracks payroll from private employers, and MIT's Billion Prices Project as ways to track employment and inflation, respectively, in the US. The investors declined to be named because their firms don't authorize them to speak publicly. Some investors tap datasets that constantly scrape e-commerce prices, such as PriceStats, and track how different products rise and fall over time. This is a useful tool to understand Trump's tariff policies' impact, given the volume of online goods that US consumers buy from overseas. Payroll and scheduling company Homebase tracks more than 150,000 small businesses and produces monthly employment reports. LinkUp has tracked online job postings since 2007. Numerator has become a key source for in-person consumer data at places such as restaurants and home improvement stores. "Given the recent BLS conversations, we've recently seen demand for our data increase," Homebase CEO John Waldmann said in a statement. Not a replacement These alternative data sources are just that — alternative. They were used to get a sneak peek or a deeper look at inflation or unemployment figures that the government would release, not replace them entirely. They also sometimes vary. For example, ADP's payroll figures often diverge from the BLS's monthly jobs report, and MIT's Billion Prices Project can capture inflation trends sooner than the official CPI but is less comprehensive. "We don't see them replacing economic statistics altogether in the near future," said Julie Meigh, the head of ESG & macro research at alt-data platform Neudata, about non-traditional datasets. Even if BLS data becomes less trustworthy, the different macro investors who spoke with Business Insider said they'll still need to use it in some fashion unless there's a structural change in financial products. For example, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, or TIPS, change when the Consumer Price Index from the government is announced. For those who have exposure to these types of assets, ignoring the BLS is not possible even if the data becomes untrustworthy. As one trader at one of the world's biggest macro hedge funds said, he was surprised markets weren't more spooked by Trump's firing. Equity markets were near record highs, and bond yields stayed mostly steady. "I think it's clear that institutions are not as strong as many had thought," this individual said.
