Hyderabad: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has issued a new notice to BRS working president KT Rama Rao in connection with the alleged illegal transfer of Rs 55 crore to the London-based company Formula E Operations (FEO).
He has been asked to appear before the bureau on June 16 (Monday).
This is the second time that the BRS leader has been summoned in the case. The ACB had served notice to KTR earlier on May 26, asking him to appear for questioning. However, he sought more time, citing his scheduled trip to the UK and USA.
KTR is accused of directing the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) top brass to release the funds through the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) to ensure the second edition of the race took place in Hyderabad.
The first edition was held in Hyderabad and sponsored by the city-based company Ace Nxt Gen Pvt Ltd. However, Ace Nxt Gen backed out of sponsoring the second edition, so the govt took responsibility for sponsoring it, with the intention of holding it in 2024. The ACB alleges that the payment was made without following the established procedures, despite the existence of a model code of conduct (MCC). After Congress came to power, however, they cancelled the second edition and ordered an inquiry.

Israeli strikes hit key oil, energy sites in Tehran, triggering fires and panic

Israel's latest wave of airstrikes on Iran has hit several major energy facilities in and around Tehran, igniting fires and triggering widespread panic among residents. The attacks, which began late on Saturday and continued into the early hours of Sunday, targeted the Shahran fuel and gasoline depot in the north of the capital and the Shahr Rey oil refinery in the south, according to Iran's oil ministry and state media reports. The strikes sent thick plumes of smoke and flame billowing across the Tehran skyline. 'The fire is terrifying, it's massive; there is a lot of commotion here,' Mostafa Shams, a resident of Shahran told The New York Times. 'It's the gasoline depots that are exploding one after another, it's loud and scary.' The Shahran depot, which contains at least 11 storage tanks and handles up to 8 million litres of gasoline daily, has long been viewed as a high-risk site. Officials say the facility holds enough fuel to supply the capital for up to three days. Explosions at the depot threatened nearby residential buildings, according to a ministry official. In southern Tehran, emergency crews were dispatched to contain a fire at the Shahr Rey refinery, one of Iran's largest. Reza Salehi, a resident of the city, told NYT he could see the flames from miles away. According to Israeli defence officials, warplanes also struck locations in Tehran linked to Iran's nuclear programme, including experimental research labs. Earlier on Saturday, Israel also targeted energy infrastructure elsewhere in the country, including a section of the South Pars gas field, one of the largest of its kind in the world and central to Iran's energy production. The attacks mark a significant escalation in Israel's military operations against Tehran, focusing not just on military or nuclear sites but on vital civilian infrastructure. 'We have entered the second phase of the war, which is extremely dangerous and destructive,' Abdollah Babakhani, a Germany-based expert on Iran's energy sector, told NYT. Hamid Hosseini, a member of the energy committee at Iran's Chamber of Commerce, said officials had long debated relocating the Shahran depot due to the risks it posed. 'An attack or an accident here could be catastrophic,' he said. (With inputs from Agencies, The New York Times)

Mohammad Azharuddin's son follows father's footsteps, joins politics; named Telangana Congress General Secretary

Mohammad Azharuddin's son has followed his father's footsteps and has entered politics. Mohammad Asaduddin is among the 69 general secretaries, appointed to the Telangana Congress earlier this week by the party leadership. Asaduddin has also featured in Ranji Trophy matches, and will now enter politics, just like his father. The appointment of Asaduddin, who is also 35-years-old, took place after Hyderabad's Jubilee Hills seat became vacant, after MLA Maganti Gopinth's death on Sunday due to a heart attack. It also led to speculation that Asaduddin could be a contestant representing Congress for the polls. Then in November 2023 Telangana elections, Azharuddin was also the Congress nominee from Jubilee Hills, and he lost to Maganti of the BRS by a margin of 16,337 votes after he got an early lead against the sitting MLA. While speaking to The Print about getting a Congress ticket, he said, 'I don't know what's in store for me. My dad is still active in politics. Let's see.' He was formally associated with the Congress since the 2023 polls, and was also actively involved in his father's poll campaign, organising rallies mohalla meetings etc., across the constituency. 'All I can say is that despite the disappointing loss, I stayed strongly connected with the people in Jubilee Hills, taking up their issues,' he said. In the past, he has also served as the Youth Congress' sports cell secretary in Telangana. He is also a graduate in law and is married to tennis player Sania Mirza's sister Anam Mirza. On Tuesday, Azharuddin wrote on X, 'A proud and emotional moment for me as my son, Mohammed Asaduddin, steps into his official role in public life as the General Secretary of the Telangana Congress.' 'I've seen his commitment to people, his passion for service, and his sincerity up close. May he stay grounded, focused, and guided by the values that truly matter. Wishing him all the very best as he takes on this responsibility.'

‘Will look into all theories behind crash': Aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu

New Delhi: The government will look into all possible theories of what could have caused the Air India plane crash this week, aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu said on Saturday during the government's first briefing into the tragedy on Thursday – the deadliest of its kind in three decades. Naidu said the Centre has also set up a high-level multi-disciplinary panel to ascertain the 'root cause' of the crash of the London-bound Air India flight 171 in Ahmedabad and assess any contributing factors including mechanical failure, human error and regulatory compliances, in addition to the probe conducted by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Board (AAIB). The panel, headed by Union home secretary Govind Mohan, was mandated to give its report in three months, Naidu said. Separately, officials said India is also exploring plans to create a new 'aviation safety board' on the lines of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), an American agency that has a wide remit to probe accidents, including the aviation sector. One of these officials said the new aviation safety board will likely supervise other regulators in the sector, such as the director general of civil aviation (DGCA). The plan involves the collaboration of ministries of civil aviation and home and it is likely to be discussed in the meeting of the committee headed by the home secretary. 'The officials are discussing and trying to decide exactly what the responsibilities and limits of the safety board will have,' one of these officials said, adding that the scrutiny could extend to the policies and regulations of DGCA. A second official added: 'These (discussions on the constitution of the board) are initial talks and are aimed for the future. It will not be associated with the DGCA.' To be sure, the AAIB is an independent aviation safety body, empowered with the ability to make recommendations for future safety. But the AAIB's remit does not cover scrutiny of DGCA policies. The first person quoted above said that one of the proposals is also to bring in transparency in aviation accident data and create a system like the NTSB's docket. 'There are autonomous bodies as safety boards. A need for a national safety board, legal autonomy, funding and international credibility is being discussed,' the second official said. A former official associated with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), a specialised agency of the United Nations that sets international rules and standards for civil aviation, said: 'There is no standard structure of a safety board in India and the need for having it has been discussed in the past,' he said. Officials said that while discussions have just begun, 'It has to be seen what form does it take in the country: as a judicial authority or quasi-judicial or recommendatory nature'.
