Mohammad Azharuddin's son follows father's footsteps, joins politics; named Telangana Congress General Secretary

Hindustan Times9 hours ago

Mohammad Azharuddin's son has followed his father's footsteps and has entered politics. Mohammad Asaduddin is among the 69 general secretaries, appointed to the Telangana Congress earlier this week by the party leadership.
Asaduddin has also featured in Ranji Trophy matches, and will now enter politics, just like his father. The appointment of Asaduddin, who is also 35-years-old, took place after Hyderabad's Jubilee Hills seat became vacant, after MLA Maganti Gopinth's death on Sunday due to a heart attack. It also led to speculation that Asaduddin could be a contestant representing Congress for the polls.
Then in November 2023 Telangana elections, Azharuddin was also the Congress nominee from Jubilee Hills, and he lost to Maganti of the BRS by a margin of 16,337 votes after he got an early lead against the sitting MLA.
While speaking to The Print about getting a Congress ticket, he said, 'I don't know what's in store for me. My dad is still active in politics. Let's see.'
He was formally associated with the Congress since the 2023 polls, and was also actively involved in his father's poll campaign, organising rallies mohalla meetings etc., across the constituency.
'All I can say is that despite the disappointing loss, I stayed strongly connected with the people in Jubilee Hills, taking up their issues,' he said.
In the past, he has also served as the Youth Congress' sports cell secretary in Telangana. He is also a graduate in law and is married to tennis player Sania Mirza's sister Anam Mirza.
On Tuesday, Azharuddin wrote on X, 'A proud and emotional moment for me as my son, Mohammed Asaduddin, steps into his official role in public life as the General Secretary of the Telangana Congress.'
'I've seen his commitment to people, his passion for service, and his sincerity up close. May he stay grounded, focused, and guided by the values that truly matter. Wishing him all the very best as he takes on this responsibility.'

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday condoled the loss of lives in Uttarakhand chopper crash and demanded a 'thorough investigation' into the mishap as well as proper safety arrangements for all trips, to ensure that such incidents do not recur. Raising an alarm over the gravity of situation, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Rajya Sabha said that the chopper crash in Uttarakhand is fifth such helicopter accident in the last six weeks and demanded that accountability for these accidents must be fixed and those responsible must be brought to justice. Taking to his social media handle, the Congress MP wrote: 'The news of helicopter crash in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand is very painful. Seven passengers have died. Our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. May God give strength to the bereaved family in this hour of grief.' 'There is an appeal to the state and central government that these accidents should be investigated and proper safety arrangements should be ensured,' he further said. Meanwhile, helicopter services for Kedarnath have been suspended for the next two days. 'Helicopter services will not run today or tomorrow. These services will remain closed until the safety of the passengers is ensured,' Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami told the mediapersons on Sunday. Early this morning, seven people, including the pilot were killed after the chopper crashed near the forested area of Gaurikund in Rudraprayag district. Chhattisgarh Congress releases expenditure account after ED attaches Rajiv Bhawan

RAIPUR: After the Enforcement Directorate (ED) provisionally attached the Congress Bhawan in Sukma last Friday, the opposition in Chhattisgarh made public on what expenditures were done and how in the construction of the party's office 'Rajiv Bhawan' in the district. The Congress expressed its annoyance and cited the ED's move as part of the BJP's political conspiracy as the opposition claimed that the central agency has already been provided with the information demanded on Sukma party office in writing. 'Despite that the ED has maliciously attached the Sukma district office of Congress. The entire expenses on its construction has been borne by the state Congress party, every rupee spent has been accounted for, the payment done through cheques and got audited', claimed Sushil Anand Shukla, Congress media cell chairman. The total cost of construction of the district Congress Bhawan is Rs 65.84 lakh, he stated. The ED has provisionally attached the Congress party office building besides the properties owned by Congress MLA Kawasi Lakhma and his son Harish in connection with the alleged liquor scam in Chhattisgarh.

Joshi criticises Congress govt. for prioritising internal conflicts over State's development

Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi has lambasted the Congress-led government in the State for prioritizing internal conflicts over the development of the State. Mr. Joshi pointed out that internal differences among Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and other Cabinet Ministers have brought development of the State to a grinding halt. Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Mr. Joshi said that though the Siddaramaiah-led government has completed two years in power, most of the welfare schemes never took off yet due to infighting within the State leadership. The welfare schemes have failed to reach the intended beneficiaries, development works have been moving at a very slow pace and deteriorating law and order situation in the State has become a matter of concern, he added. 'Siddaramaiah shifting blame' Holding the Siddaramaiah-led government morally responsible for the stampede during RCB's victory celebrations, Mr. Joshi slammed Mr. Siddaramaiah and his Cabinet colleagues over their 'disgraceful and desperate' attempt to shift blame for the stampede that claimed 11 lives. Replying to a query, Mr Joshi clarified that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) sanctioned for the Kalyana Karnataka region will not be shifted to any other region. A special committee has been set up to decide on the proposed AIIMS establishment, he added.
