Mumbai doctor who jumped into sea from Atal Setu was depressed after lover's family opposed their marriage: police
Dr Omkar Kavitake, 32, a senior surgeon at Mumbai's Sir J J Hospital, has not been found even after 42 hours of the search operation launched by the Ulwe police, along with marine security personnel.
A police officer, who is a part of the probe, told The Indian Express, 'During the preliminary inquiry, when we spoke to some of his family members, friends, and colleagues, we found that Dr Kavitake was in a relationship with another doctor from Mumbai. The two were planning to get married soon'.
'But, around a month ago, the family of the woman doctor refused to accept their love relationship, and said no to their marriage plan. After this, Dr Kavitake reportedly slipped into depression. This may have been the trigger point that drove him to take the extreme step of jumping into the sea,' added the officer.
His family, friends and colleagues said they are in shock, as Dr Kavitake, who had eight years of experience in general surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and proctology, was doing well professionally, and was also slated to become a lecturer soon.
'We fear he may have been drowned, as the area in the sea where he jumped from the Atal Setu has deep and choppy waters,' another police officer said.
Dr Kavitake, who lived in the Kalamboli area along with his mother, called his mother Monday night, saying he was coming home for dinner. However, he instead left for Mumbai in his Honda Amaze and stopped on the Sewri-Nhava Sheva Sea-Link, where he was seen by a motorist. He allegedly jumped into the sea from the bridge at around 9.26 pm.
A motorist who had spotted him informed the control room, and a police team arrived at the scene to find his car and a phone inside. From the phone, the police could identify him, and inform his family members. No letter was found inside the doctor's car, said the police.
The police, along with the marine police, have been searching for Dr Kavitake in the sea with the help of patrolling boats since Sunday morning.
'We have informed police stations alongside the coastal area, fishermen, and local villagers to alert us if they spot a body,' said Arjun Rajane, Senior Inspector, Ulwe Police Station.
The police have so far only made a diary entry.

Kolkata Police probe alleged assault on RG Kar victim's mother during march; 7 FIRs against BJP leaders
The Kolkata Police said on Sunday that they launched an investigation into the allegation of the RG Kar victim's mother that the police had beaten her during a protest march organised by the BJP on the anniversary of her daughter's rape and murder at a state-run medical college and hospital in the West Bengal capital last year. Commissioner of Police Manoj Verma, who had initially dismissed the woman's claims, said the investigation would proceed even without a formal complaint from the victim's family. 'She has been injured, and that's unfortunate. But why it happened and how it happened is being investigated,' he said. 'We are investigating from all angles. CCTV footage is being viewed. It is not possible for us to say anything right now without seeing everything.' In response, the RG Kar victim's father said, 'Whatever happens, the CP just says it is unfortunate and he feels his work is done. If I slap him and then say sorry, will that be okay? Let them examine CCTV footage. Hopefully they will find it.' In connection with Saturday's 'Nabanna Abhijan' protest march, the police have registered seven FIRs against BJP leaders and workers, including Kaustab Bagchi and MLAs Ashok Dinda and Agnimitra Pal, on charges that they obstructed and threatened police officers on duty, leading to five of them sustaining injuries. Bagchi, however, dismissed the cases as politically motivated. 'No one is bothered about the FIR filed by Kolkata Police. They are servants, they follow what their lady master asks them to do,' he said. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and other BJP leaders claim that around 100 workers of the party were injured in the police action. Adhikari alleged that the victim's mother had suffered 'quite serious' injuries. 'A CT scan has been done. An MRI has been done,' he said Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. She is a journalist with over a decade of experience in the media industry. ‘Just want justice, never thought this could happen': RG Kar victim's mother recounts ‘assault by police' during death anniversary march
The mother of the RG Kar rape and murder victim, who was injured allegedly during Saturday's police action during the 'Nabanna Abhijan' march held in Kolkata on the trainee doctor's first death anniversary, said on Sunday that she had never thought 'this could happen.' 'I never thought this could happen. I just want justice for my child. I am stable, though my head hurts. I have been kept under observation,' she told The Indian Express. The victim's mother alleged that she had been assaulted and her 'shankha' (a traditional bangle worn by married Bengali women) broken in the police action. 'Why are they stopping us? All we want is to reach the secretariat and seek justice for my daughter,' she said. Her family members said they would take her back home later on Sunday after she is discharged from the private hospital where she has been admitted to. 'My wife is stable. I will take her home after she is discharged. Doctors said she is out of danger. Yesterday, she was in danger when she was brought to the hospital,' the father of the deceased trainee doctor of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital told the media. He alleged that the police were posted in the hospital to keep a watch on them and that the hospital had been pressured not to admit his wife initially. 'Two police personnel came to the hospital. One of them is sitting outside the ward where she is admitted. I asked them why they are here. They said they are just doing their duty. When my wife was brought in, the hospital said they needed to admit her, but late in the night, they said they would keep her under observation instead,' he said. The RG Kar doctor's father said the Rapid Action Force had assaulted his wife, 'The RAF assaulted her with sticks. They could not pull me. They pushed me in the chest during the scuffle,' he said, further alleging that the police probably had orders from seniors to stop the rally. 'The ruling party tried to fob us off with money, but could not; we don't have children that they will give jobs to, so they are assaulting us. The fight will go on,' he said. Hospital sources said a CT scan done on the RG Kar victim's mother found no internal injuries. 'Due to the scuffle, there are some injuries on the back. Antibiotics were administered,' a source said. The family's legal counsel also visited the hospital. 'I am not here to do any politics. I have just come to visit my client and take legal instructions,' the counsel said. The 'Nabanna Abhijan' was called by the trainee doctor's parents to mark their daughter's first death anniversary, after the Calcutta High Court allowed a peaceful protest. However, the protesters did not follow the prescribed route but headed towards Park Street and tried to break police barricades. The police lathi-charged them. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari visited the hospital on Saturday. Other BJP leaders also met the RG Kar victim's mother. Speaking to the media, BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar said, 'We have spoken to the family and the doctors. I also feel there is some pressure from the state government. So if a second opinion is required, we will take her to a central hospital, but right now she is stable. She has also told me that she will not wear 'shankha' until she gets justice.' On August 9, 2024, a doctor was raped and murdered at the state-run RG Kar hospital in Kolkata. The lone convict in the case, Sanjay Roy, who was a civic police volunteer, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

‘He has gone while trying to get a better life for us': Married five months ago, Ludhiana soldier dies in Kashmir Op
Married just five months ago, Lance Naik Pritpal Singh, 27, from Manupur village of Punjab's Ludhiana district, was killed in action during an intense gunfight with terrorists in South Kashmir's Kulgam, Friday. Back home in Punjab, the wails of mourning villagers filled the air at Manupur in Samrala sub-division Saturday as the news of Pritpal's passing reached his family. Wrapped in tricolor, his mortal remains are expected to reach the village Sunday and the cremation will be performed with full military honors. Speaking to The Indian Express, Harpreet Singh, his elder brother said: 'Parivaar da karde karde aap turr gaya (He has gone while trying to earn a better life for family). He got married just five months ago in February. His newly-wedded wife is inconsolable. We have seen too much poverty and our father is a daily-wager. He had joined the Army after passing class 12 so that our family's financial condition could improve.' According to the Army statement, Lance Naik Pripal Singh from 19 Rashtriya Rifles (Sikh Light Infantry), died 'on August 8 during intermittent and intense exchange of fire with terrorists' after he 'sustained severe splinter injury when hiding terrorists lobbed a grenade.' He later succumbed. Harpreet said that his brother's only wish was to see their father Harbans Singh fully cured of the oral cancer he has been suffering from. 'He ensured that my father got the best treatment from the Army hospital. I spoke to him last on August 7, hours before the incident, and even then he told me to take care of my father and others in the family. We had asked him to come home for Raksha Bandhan festivities but he said it won't be possible as he was in the middle of an important operation and he had to catch those terrorists first. He had promised to take leave after the Operation and come home for Diwali. But now he won't,' said Harpreet, crying inconsolably. Harpreet said that even as his brother had taken a bank loan and got their house renovated few months ago around his marriage in February, he himself hardly stayed in it. 'He hardly stayed in the renovated house. We were waiting for his arrival on Diwali to celebrate together. Mera bhraa turr gaya (My brother is gone forever),' he said. Harbans Singh, father of the deceased soldier said: 'Saade baare sochda sochda chala gaya (He has left the world worrying for us). He had promised to come home on Diwali. We were waiting.' Pritpal is survived by old parents — father Harbans Singh and sister Kuldeep Kaur, wife Manpreet Kaur, elder brother Harpreet Singh and younger brother Gurdeep Singh. Harpreet, who works at a private factory, says: 'What can we demand from the government now. We have lost everything. Everyone knows that terrorists in our country are being sent by Pakistan. Instead of conducting these operations, our government should take full-fledged action against the neighboring country and go all out to teach them a lesson. How long can this go?'
