Two to One review – East Berlin cash scam capers through ruins of communism
But how to explain this mountain of cash? Sandra Hüller plays a woman called Maren who, with husband Robert (Max Riemelt), leads the plan while Ronald Zehrfeld plays Volker, with whom Maren has some emotional history. Veteran player Peter Kurth brings his mighty presence to the role of Markowski, Robert's glowering dad and disaffected state security guard working at the depot who puts them on to the scam.
It's an interesting time to be making a movie about the old GDR, a place whose economic privation and longterm alienation is said to have made it a breeding ground for Germany's new far right. Around 20 years ago, Wolfgang Becker's comedy Good Bye Lenin! brought a similar satirical flavour to its Rip Van Winkle fable of a fiercely communist East Berliner who succumbs to a coma just before the fall of the Wall and on regaining consciousness later is not permitted to discover the awful truth about communism's collapse.
There is a fair bit of spark and fun in the opening act of this goofy comedy, a bit like Danny Boyle's children's movie Millions (and how extraordinary to remember, incidentally, that all the talk at the time was of the Wessis' economic hardship, having to swallow up these shiftless eastern ex-communists). But there's not much clarity or discipline to the script itself. First the scam revolves around discreetly buying up consumer items such as microwaves from door-to-door salesmen who still accept ostmarks and sharing these items out or (presumably) reselling them; then it's a matter of finding foreign-domiciled state apparatchiks who are allowed leeway on exchanging cash after the deadline. There's also an unlikely and dramatically unexciting plot point about using the cash to revive the old factory for the community's benefit – so the film's audience understands that the characters are not just greedy.
This longish movie jumps the shark around halfway through the running time and loses focus. Hüller is at any rate always a potent, attractive presence.
Two to One is in UK cinemas from 2 May.

Emmerdale icon set to quit the Dales days after co-star's exit was confirmed and shock cheating plot
AN Emmerdale icon could be poised to quit the Dales forever after signalling his attention to move away. The ITV soap could be about to lose one of its biggest characters after Aaron Dingle decided he wanted to make a fresh start away from the village. 3 3 In today's episode, fans saw Aaron wrestle with his guilt after cheating on husband John with his ex and John's brother, Robert. Aaron and Robert gave into temptation on the soap leading Robert to assume that Aaron wanted to get back with him. It saw Robert with a spring in his step as he discussed with Aaron how they would break the news to John. However, he was blissfully unaware that Aaron was in fact regretting the decision and was already feeling awful for betraying John. It led Aaron to make a huge decision as he sat John down for a chat. He told his husband that they should get a "fresh start" away from Robert and the Dales and they should move away for good. He insisted on them leaving the next day to stay somewhere for a couple of weeks with the intention to remain there should they like it. Unbeknown to Aaron, this came at a perfect timing for John with the Police deciding to re-evalute the cause of Nate Robinson's death after vital new information came to light which proved that someone faked the suicide note of Nate's apparent killer. Fearing he could be caught by the police, John accepted Aaron's decision to call it quits on the Dales and they headed straight to the pub to tell their nearest and dearest. Aaron said to his mum: "If we like the area [we are going], we are gonna stay on." Emmerdale's John Sugden makes twisted accusation in a bid to get rid of brother Robert ahead of exit As Chas thought they meant just a few weeks, John clarified: "Actually, we were thinking of something more long-term." Aaron added: "We need a fresh start so, we are moving away!" It could spend the end of time for Aaron in the village with his heart set on going for good. This bombshell episode comes just days after it was confirmed that John Sugden would be making a certain exit very soon with actor Oliver Farnworth leaving the role. The Sun told last week how John's final scenes would play out very soon. A source said: 'It's the beginning of the end for John. He's got away with so much but he's about to make a fatal mistake that sees him exposed for what he is. 'Obviously Oliver knew that a character like John had a shelf life and that's rapidly approaching. 'He's loved his time on the show but there's still plenty of twists and turns coming before he departs for good.' The Sun exclusively revealed last week how the soap had filmed devastating murder scenes for Mackenzie Boyd as Oliver's character John strikes again. A source said: 'The scenes are going to be really harrowing for fans to watch. 'Mackenzie has been in so many scrapes and dangerous positions but this time it looks like he's bitten off more than he can chew. 'Viewers will be on the edges of their seats watching what happens.' 3

Aaron calls killer John out over his lies in heated Emmerdale showdown
John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth)'s manipulative ways in Emmerdale have backfired spectacularly. Trying to turn everyone against his rival Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley), John engineered a situation where Robert became angry with his nephew Harry, and used this to turn Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) against him. He then goaded Robert about what had happened until Robert was in despair. Aaron (Danny Miller) heard Robert smashing up his room and went to investigate, and as he comforted an absolutely broken Robert the two men gave into the feelings that they still have for each other and ended up sleeping together. Obviously it's the last thing John would have wanted, but he was busy getting some bad news elsewhere. The police had discovered that the evidence against Owen, the man John framed for the murder of Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter) was shaky at best. So from thinking he was nicely in the clear for that killing, John is once again worried that someone will finally link him to Nate's death. In upcoming episodes, Robert feels that he and Aaron have turned a corner and are meant to be together once again. Aaron, however, is full of guilt that he betrayed his husband John. He confides in Mackenzie (Lawrence Robb), who is annoyed by what he hears. Wracked with guilt, Aaron starts to think that leaving the village could be the only way he can remove himself from the temptation of Robert and make a proper go of things with John. This idea suits John very well. With the police having found an inconsistency with Owen's 'suicide note' – the document John wrote while he waited for Owen to die of a drugs overdose – the pressure is getting to be too much. There's some respite, however, when the removal man who came to take Nate's stuff away apparently confirms that Owen was the one who paid him to do the job, and Cain (Jeff Hordley) is satisfied that Owen is the man who killed his son. In the wake of this, Robert starts to think that perhaps he was wrong to be suspicious of John. But soon after that another villager finds a clue that raises disturbing questions. More Trending John has offered Mackenzie a lift in his van, and Mack finds something very suspicious in the vehicle. This leads to deadly danger for him as John realises he can't let Mack tell anyone else about his suspicions. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Emmerdale spoilers: Aaron 'rumbles' John, Moira's revenge and Mack's fate 'sealed'
Emmerdale spoilers for next week tease the walls are closing in on John Sugden, with a discovery for Aaron Dingle and a warning for Robert Sugden, while Moira Dingle wants revenge There's more big scenes ahead on Emmerdale and plenty of fans' favourites feature next week, according to new spoilers. We've got Aaron Dingle being rather suspicious of his husband John Sugden, unaware of just how dangerous he is. Aaron's soulmate meanwhile, Robert Sugden, is clearly still hung up on him after their recent secret fling as he's given a warning. Then there's Moira Dingle who takes revenge as she learns a major bombshell. There's more scenes for exes Charity Dingle and Vanessa Woodfield too, amid concerns for a character. It comes as Vanessa kicked Charity out of her house just weeks ago after their kiss, which had sparked hopes for a Vanity reunion on the ITV soap. READ MORE: Emmerdale's Aaron and Robert future sealed as fans left 'screaming' over reunion That's not all as there's schemes, a DNA drama, a split and a lot of guilt for one resident. The battle is on between two families too in some more humorous scenes. Let's kick off with the latest gossip in the Aaron, Robert and John debacle. John and Aaron flee the village, amid John's fears his killer crimes will be exposed while Aaron fears he will be exposed after sleeping with his ex Robert, the brother of his husband. But something happens that sparks questions for Aaron, and he wastes no time in confronting John about it. It's said to be something "shocking" and whatever the discovery is, he's soon calling his husband a liar - but what has he found out? He appears to be holding a photo frame, but more will be revealed next week. As for Robert, he's clearly still longing for a Robron reunion, and aren't we all. Next week it's clear he's still hoping to get Aaron back as someone is forced to intervene. Aaron's mum Chas Dingle begs Robert to leave Aaron alone and let him go - but will he give up? Robert is busy next week it seems, as he and sister Victoria Sugden take on the Bartons up at Moira's farm in a battle of who can do the most and the best job. It stems from Ross and Robert arguing over the workload, with Ross claiming the latter is not pulling his weight. Things soon get personal, and Victoria and Matty Barton are dragged into things - leading to a competition between the two families. Ross has got other drama going on though, amid him growing convinced Charity Dingle could be pregnant with his baby after their one-night stand. The pair slept together after getting drunk recently, as Charity hit the rocks with her husband Mackenzie Boyd. The issue is Charity had agreed to be a surrogate for her granddaughter Sarah Sugden, and Sarah and her partner Jacob Gallagher were thrilled to find out Charity was pregnant after an embryo transfer. Charity is hiding her fears that this isn't what led to her pregnancy though, and next week she confides in her ex Vanessa once more after a split from Mack. What Charity has no idea, and what is being kept under wraps, is the fate of Mack after his run-in with killer John that airs this week. Upcoming episodes see him running for his life after exposing John's lies, but we have yet to learn what happens next amid reports he will be killed off. There's concern for Mack next week, when he hasn't returned after their fight and Charity fears she has lost him for good. When Sarah tells Vanessa that Mackenzie's ended things with Charity, Ross overhears and asks Charity if it's because of their fling. A distraught Charity denies this and kicks him out, before Vanessa offers her a shoulder to cry on. Charity breaks down, and finally confesses she might not be carrying Sarah's baby - while she allows Vanessa to believe she slept with Mack. Vanessa urges her to tell the truth, but Charity refuses and says she's just hoping for the best - adamant that Vanessa keeps her secret. Ross continues to question Charity though, not believing her claims that there's no way the baby is his and soon demands a DNA test. As Charity begins to crumble, will she be forced to tell Sarah the truth? Also next week, Moira takes her revenge after finding out what happened with Dylan weeks earlier. With Dylan keen to keep on a straight track after being taken in by Paddy and Mandy, villain Ray puts doubts in his mind over their real agenda. He assures the teen he'll look out for him and pays him in advance for another job. With Dylan having claimed to April that he's no longer doing dodgy dealings with Ray, she is suspicious when he continues to act strangely next week. April ends up confiding in her father Marlon about her fears that Dylan might be up to his old tricks. Soon when April spots Dylan she confronts him and learns about the drug drop off, but he's hurt to find out Paddy and Marlon know about his past and April fears he's going to split with her. When Paddy is supportive it encourages Dylan to stop things with Ray, but how will he react? There's more trouble though when Kyle recognises Dylan as one of the intruders at the farm weeks ago, and he tells his stepmother Moira. She's soon promising him a taste of his own medicine and grabs a pitchfork, but will she go too far? Finally next week, Belle ends things with Kammy after Gabby tells her he was the one who beat up Vinny. Kammy protests but is not believed, leaving Vinny feeling guilty after his lies about his former pal. Vinny tries to tell Belle that Kammy is a good man, but doesn't tell her what really happened. When he later apologises to Kammy he's heartbroken when Kammy refuses to accept it - but will he tell Gabby and Belle the truth?
