Two to One review – East Berlin cash scam capers through ruins of communism
Natja Brunckhorst is the actor-turned-director who first came to prominence as the teen lead of Uli Edel's Christiane F in 1981, playing a West Berlin drug addict and effectively co-starring with David Bowie, who had a cameo in the film. Now she has written and directed this satirical caper with an Ealingesque premise: a bunch of depressed people in East Germany in 1990, with reunification a few days away, discover an old storage depot with tons of abandoned and soon-to-be-worthless ostmarks – ostmarks galore, in fact – and not much time left for sneakily exchanging them for deutschemarks at the accepted (and humiliating) rate of two to one.
But how to explain this mountain of cash? Sandra Hüller plays a woman called Maren who, with husband Robert (Max Riemelt), leads the plan while Ronald Zehrfeld plays Volker, with whom Maren has some emotional history. Veteran player Peter Kurth brings his mighty presence to the role of Markowski, Robert's glowering dad and disaffected state security guard working at the depot who puts them on to the scam.
It's an interesting time to be making a movie about the old GDR, a place whose economic privation and longterm alienation is said to have made it a breeding ground for Germany's new far right. Around 20 years ago, Wolfgang Becker's comedy Good Bye Lenin! brought a similar satirical flavour to its Rip Van Winkle fable of a fiercely communist East Berliner who succumbs to a coma just before the fall of the Wall and on regaining consciousness later is not permitted to discover the awful truth about communism's collapse.
There is a fair bit of spark and fun in the opening act of this goofy comedy, a bit like Danny Boyle's children's movie Millions (and how extraordinary to remember, incidentally, that all the talk at the time was of the Wessis' economic hardship, having to swallow up these shiftless eastern ex-communists). But there's not much clarity or discipline to the script itself. First the scam revolves around discreetly buying up consumer items such as microwaves from door-to-door salesmen who still accept ostmarks and sharing these items out or (presumably) reselling them; then it's a matter of finding foreign-domiciled state apparatchiks who are allowed leeway on exchanging cash after the deadline. There's also an unlikely and dramatically unexciting plot point about using the cash to revive the old factory for the community's benefit – so the film's audience understands that the characters are not just greedy.
This longish movie jumps the shark around halfway through the running time and loses focus. Hüller is at any rate always a potent, attractive presence.

Actor Ryan has revealed all on the moving scenes ahead, as he teased viewers would be told new details about what has gone on. He explained: "It is emotional scenes. They're big scenes, and it's things they haven't had a chance to say to each other for six years. A lot is to be revealed in these episodes." Emmerdale's Ryan Hawley teases John's 'downfall' and danger for Robert When Aaron initially declines to visit Robert who's back in prison for breaking his probation rules, he's left stunned when his ex-husband does eventually show up. Ryan spilled: "Aaron comes to visit Robert much to his surprise and delight. "It is kind of special in that there's only three or four cast members, it's just Robert, Aaron and John, maybe Victoria as well. There's really big scenes, lovely scenes. it's a nice journey throughout. I was really pleased with the writing." Soon enough Robert makes his return to the village, for the first time since his exit in 2019. He adds: "Robert returns to the village and rejoices in telling John and Aaron that he's back." Ryan shared how much he's loved being back on the soap for so long, reuniting with his former cast members after the big twist tat aired recently. He shared: "It's been lovely. I have had so much fun, I had forgotten how much fun it could be and how funny people are, and how much of a lift it can give you when you've got a full fay of scenes." Ryan also discussed the "devastating" moment where Aaron refused to end things with John, rejecting Robert. He shared: "He's devastated that he hasn't been able to change the course of action. "He turned up thinking everything would go his way and Aaron would jump at the chance to be with him again, and he was there to save the day. It's not gone that way and he's gutted. "He's come back to the village and has been so publicly humiliated in front of everyone." On whether Robert will try again to win back Aaron, he said: "At this moment I am not sure. He resigned himself to the fact that Aaron's chosen John. The events of that week bring him back to the village."

He promises to be there for Jean while she tries to recover from her breakup with Harvey. On the tube home, Joel asks Tommy to film him, but Tommy is horrified when he witnesses Joel pretending to fall on fellow passenger, Isla, who he touches inappropriately. Isla reports Joel, who is apprehended. At the station, Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) demands answers while Vicki (Alice Haig) comforts Isla - and even supports her decision to report Joel. But when Ross starts fearing for Joel's future, she meets up with Isla and makes an offer. Kim (Tameka Empson), Mo (Laila Morse), Priya (Sophie Khan Levy), Denise (Diane Parish), Honey (Emma Barton) and Yolande (Angela Wynter) party at The Vic. But as the night gets steadily messier, Elaine (Harriet Thorpe) shocks Linda (Kellie Bright) by declaring drinks are on the house. Meanwhile, Phil (Steve McFadden) and Nigel (Paul Bradley) pop in for a drink and Phil notices how much Linda is struggling. He helps her out while a tipsy Elaine offers to book Priya a cruise. Home and Away Roo hesitates to make the call against Eliza, despite the latter's behaviour growing darker each day. She later finds Harper and Tane, asking them for insight on Eliza. Later on, the teen faces the music. Remi and Bree are disgruntled to find the River Boys camped out the front of Cash's place. But they later find out that Lacey has gone into hiding after making a statement. Elsewhere, Bree insists that Sonny needs supervision upon release from hospital and enlists Remi's help.

A character's cancer diagnosis is exposed to a family member, paving the way for upsetting scenes. There's villagers at war aplenty too, in what will no doubt be a dramatic week of episode. Kicking things off, Ryan Hawley's character heads back to the village for good next week, and it could lead to drama. Aaron Dingle will have a big decision to make as he visits his ex in prison, weeks on from marrying Robert's brother John. There's emotional moments as the pair open up to one another, just as there's concern for Robert as he's left in a state in prison. As the pair reunite, amid Robron fans hoping they will give their romance another go after six years apart, Robert wastes no time in sharing how much he loves Aaron. He speaks for the viewers too as he tells Aaron that mysterious John is not the man for him. Aaron is in turmoil over the chat, but remains adamant he made the right decision by marrying John. It's not long before controlling John finds out where his husband has been though and he heads to the prison himself. Soon tense scenes see feuds boiling over as Robert exposes his recent kiss with Aaron. With that, a rivalry explodes with John prepared to get answers but also issuing his sibling with a sinister warning, making it clear he doesn't know what he's capable of. But killer John may have met his match as Robert knows he's hiding something and is determined to find out what it is. Robert vows to return to the village, and soon he shows up leaving Aaron and John furious - but where will this lead? Also next week the beginning of Bear's mystery plot kicks off with him set to return "a different person" according to bosses. Bear vanishes next week after an outburst, with it revealed he could be gone for weeks if not months. As Bear leaves his motorbike parts strewn across the place, issues at home with his son Paddy and Paddy's wife Mandy continue to heat up. As Cain agrees to let him fix his motorbike there he feigns joy, but when alone he erupts into a fury at the bike with it clear something isn't right. Bear snaps and even threatens Kammy, leaving Paddy concerned and in despair. He's dumbfounded though, as is Mandy, when Bear returns later on as if nothing has happened. Soon, Bear becomes irritated by their questioning and heads away upstairs, leaving Paddy and Mandy to fear things are getting worse. But just as they agree to confront Bear, they are stunned to find him and his bike are gone. Also next week, Charity Dingle finds out her granddaughter Sarah Sugden as the early stages of cervical cancer. Sarah has been keeping the news from her family amid her plan to continue with IVF. There's drama between sisters Vanessa Woodfield and Tracy Robinson too, while Kammy is left frustrates as pal Vinny Dingle gives him the cold shoulder. A final spoiler takes us back to Robert, as it's hinted he's facing trauma from his time in prison that threatens to land him in trouble.
