Shruti Haasan Calls 3 ‘Worse Than Heartbreak', Says It'd Trend Beyond Kolaveri Di Today
Over a decade since its release, Aishwarya Rajinikanth's directorial debut 3 is still a cult classic, not just for its viral song Why This Kolaveri Di, but also for its layered take on love and mental health. Actor Shruti Haasan, who starred alongside Dhanush in the 2012 psychological drama, believes the film was ahead of its time and would have resonated more deeply with audiences today.
Speaking in a recent interview with Prema, Shruti opened up about how much the project meant to her, and the emotional weight of seeing it underappreciated during its initial release. 'Regret I have is when some films I know are very special. And I know I gave a part of myself. And when they don't work, it's worse than heartbreak. But in general, I am not a regretful person," she said.
When asked to name the films she had in mind, Shruti didn't hesitate to mention 3. 'I wish 3 was a more commercial success. Now, everybody talks of pan-Indian films. But even back then, it had to be dubbed in Hindi; there was no OTT. I feel like if that film were released now, it would've been a rage. Much bigger than just the Kolaveri song," she explained. She also mentioned D-Day as another film she wished had reached a wider audience.
Released in 2012, 3 followed the story of Ram (Dhanush) and Janani (Shruti), a couple whose seemingly perfect love story takes a tragic turn when Ram is diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The film was praised for its emotional depth but struggled to find box office success despite the overwhelming popularity of its soundtrack.
Why This Kolaveri Di?, composed by a then-debutant Anirudh Ravichander and sung by Dhanush, became an internet sensation in 2011. It crossed millions of views within days, even earning a nod from then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who invited Dhanush as a guest to Delhi.
Meanwhile, Dhanush is gearing up for Idly Kadai and Tere Ishk Mein, while Shruti will next be seen in Coolie and Train.
