Kieran's last will be live from Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann this Saturday August 9
After three decades at the helm of RTÉ Radio 1's Céilí House, celebrated musician and award-winning broadcaster Kieran Hanrahan today announced his retirement from the national broadcaster. His final show will air on Saturday, August 9 concluding an extraordinary tenure that has helped shape traditional Irish music on airwaves across Ireland.
Kieran Hanrahan first joined RTÉ in 1992, initially presenting Fleadh Club and Both Sides Now before assuming hosting duties of Céilí House in 1995. Céilí House has been on air on RTÉ Radio since the 1950's but over the past thirty years Hanrahan has made the show his own. His warmth, knowledge and passion for music and real interest in the stories being told have firmly established the show as a stronghold for weekend listeners on RTÉ Radio 1. Every Saturday, listeners are guaranteed to hear the best of Irish Traditional music played in halls, houses and theatres all over the country.
Speaking on his retirement, Kieran Hanrahan said:
'It has been an honour and a joy to present Céilí House on RTÉ Radio 1 for the last thirty years. For me, every night was a highlight whether we were in someone's home, the local pub, the parish hall or the National Concert Hall. I am deeply grateful to our loyal listeners, and to the countless musicians, singers and dancers, whose talent and generosity brought the music to life. Thank you for making this phase of my life so rich, rewarding, memorable, and truly special.'
Tara Campbell, Head of RTÉ Radio 1 said:
' Céilí House under the masterful stewardship of Kieran Hanrahan for the last 30 years has represented public service broadcasting at its best. It's such a privilege for Radio 1 to be so warmly welcomed by musicians and performers in the heart of their communities and to be able to share their amazing talents with our loyal listeners. We wish Kieran the very best in whatever comes next and thank him most sincerely for his significant contribution to Radio 1 over more than three decades.'
Hanrahan's final broadcast, a live show from the Gig Rig at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Wexford will take place on Saturday 9 August and marks the closing of a chapter. The show will feature the best of Wexford musicians, including a quartet of Wexford pipers, music from some of the weekend's award winners and special guests.

Dublin ladies lead pub sing-song after All-Ireland win

Members of the Dublin ladies football team celebrated their All-Ireland win by leading a raucous sing-song in a Dublin pub. The Girls in Blue regained their All-Ireland title last weekend in an awesome display as they hammered old rivals Meath and avenged the infamous shock defeat of 2021, a defeat which stopped Dublin's 'drive for five.' There was to be no denying the Dubs this time around, as an Orlagh Nolan inspired performance saw them cruise past the Royals and lift the Brendan Martin Cup on the steps of the Hogan Stand in front of a crowd of more than 48,000 fans, with a huge tv audience watching on at home. In the days since the game, the Dubs have been enjoying their celebrations ever since the win and on Tuesday evening, they popped into the Merry ploughboy pub on Edmonstown Road to continue the party. And the team were well and truly the life and soul of the party, with one video clip shared by the pub showing Dubs star Hannah McGinnis playing the guitar and performing a rendition of the Vance Joy hit 'riptide' as fellow players as well as friends, family and backroom team members joined in the sing-song. McGinnis is the second Irish sports star in recent times to lead a session in a pub, with Leinster and Ireland rugby star spotted playing an accordion in a Mayo pub while on a stag do.

Aspiring performers are invited to submit an email (maximum 250 words) explaining why they should be chosen to receive the bursary. Submissions can be sent to littleshopcasting@ from August 8 to 22. Kneecap apologise to fans as concert cancelled due to 'safety concerns'

Belfast rap trio Kneecap have apologised to fans after their show in Vienna was cancelled "due to acute safety concerns". It comes after the group were banned from entering Hungary in July ahead of their scheduled performance at Sziget Festival on August 11. The group, known for their provocative lyrics and championing of the Irish language, have had several shows cancelled in recent months, including TRNSMT festival in Glasgow and at the Eden Project in Cornwall. They have said there is a smear campaign against them because of their support for Palestine and criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza. In a social media post on Friday the group said: "Our planned show in Vienna on September 1st is cancelled." JJ O'Dochartaigh (DJ Provai) of Kneecap performing on the West Holts Stage during the Glastonbury Festival at Worthy Farm in Somerset. Picture date: Saturday June 28, 2025. The social media post added: "To the 3,500 people we were looking forward to seeing at our first headline show in Vienna, we are sorry: this is out of our hands. "All tickets will be refunded. "Yet again, it is clear that this is political distraction and a further attempt to silence those who call out genocide against the Palestinian people. "But as always, we will fight on for what is right." A note on the venue's website said: "Racoon Live Entertainment GmbH hereby cancels the planned Kneecap show on September 1, 2025, at the Gasometer Vienna due to acute safety concerns raised by the responsible authorities." They hit headlines in April when footage emerged that appeared to show a band member saying "Kill your local MP" at one gig and and "Up Hamas, up Hezbollah" at another. In May, O hAnnaidh, who performs under the name Mo Chara, was charged with a terrorism offence relating to allegedly displaying a flag in support of Hezbollah at a London gig in November 2024. O hAnnaidh and his bandmates were cheered by hundreds of supporters when they arrived at Westminster Magistrates' Court on June 18. Musicians including Nadine Shah and Gurriers have said they will attend court to support the group when O hAnnaidh returns on August 20. Kneecap have apologised to the families of murdered MPs and said they have "never supported" Hamas or Hezbollah, which are banned in the UK. They were also investigated over their set at Glastonbury Festival in June, but Avon and Somerset Police said they would be taking no further action in July.
