AMMAN — The Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) on Sunday renewed its partnership with Tkiyet Um Ali (TUA), marking the 9th year in a row of a 'successful' collaboration.
This partnership amplifies the distribution of food parcels to beneficiaries according to an ACT statement.
Chief Executive Officer of ACT Harald Nijhof and TUA Director General Samer Balkar signed the agreement.
Nijhof said: "Our long-standing partnership with Tkiyet Um Ali is a source of immense pride for us at ACT."
He added: "We believe deeply in their vital mission of bringing sustainable food aid to Jordanian families, and this collaboration is a cornerstone of our commitment to actively supporting the local community. It's a testament to what can be achieved through consistent, values-driven partnership."
Balkar expressed his appreciation for the continued collaboration, saying: "Our partnership with Aqaba Container Terminal is built on shared values of responsibility, sustainability and compassion."
"For nine years, ACT has stood by Tkiyet Um Ali in our mission to fight hunger and support the most vulnerable families across Jordan. This continued collaboration reflects the true spirit of corporate citizenship, and we are proud to work hand-in-hand to create lasting impact," he added.
The ACT has established partnerships with several NGOs and community-based organisations in Jordan, including the TUA, King Hussein Cancer Foundation, the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation (JHCO) and Helping Hands.
The ACT is committed to broadening its impact by expanding support to more beneficiaries across three key areas: education, environment, and well-being. This strategic direction underpins its strategy and reflects its deep-seated belief in making a tangible difference to shape a better tomorrow, the statement added.
TUA is the first initiative of its kind in the Arab world, working to eradicate hunger through sustainable food aid. It provides monthly food parcels to the most vulnerable families across the Kingdom, ensuring long-term support rooted in dignity and social solidarity, according to the statement.

Electricity consumption surges 20% during heatwave, grid stability maintained — NEPCO

AMMAN — The National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) reported a record-breaking electricity demand of 4,700 MW on August 11 amid the ongoing heatwave, warning that consumption has surged to unprecedented levels. In an interview with the Jordan Times, NEPCO Assistant Managing Director for Planning and Bulk Supply Ahmad Dohni said that the demand was up 11 per cent compared with the same period in 2023, and 20 per cent higher than in 2024. These unprecedented demand levels prompted NEPCO to ramp up maintenance and emergency preparedness measures to ensure grid stability, Dohni said, adding that maintenance on generating units was strategically scheduled outside of peak demand periods, and currently, all units are fully operational, delivering approximately 4,275 MW from conventional sources. "Recent capacity enhancements have further strengthened the grid, including the acquisition of the Rehab Power Plant (250 MW) and the installation of air-cooling systems on all generating units at the Samra Power Plant, adding an additional 125 MW during the summer months," he added. NEPCO noted that the grid can also import up to 400 MW through the regional interconnection line, alongside a modest wind power contribution of less than 100 MW during peak summer periods. Looking forward, NEPCO also plans to expand capacity with a new combined-cycle power generation project and a hydropump storage facility. The company has called on relevant authorities to expedite approvals and implementation to safeguard the Kingdom's long-term energy security. In response to claims suggesting the grid might have collapsed without renewable energy during the heatwave, NEPCO clarified that wind power contributed no more than 100 MW during evening peak hours, with solar power unavailable at night and wind generation dependent on weather conditions. NEPCO also emphasised the crucial role of consumer behaviour in maintaining grid reliability. Since residential consumption accounts for the largest share of demand, the company urged citizens to reduce electricity use during peak hours and to adopt energy-saving habits, especially during extreme weather events. 'Public awareness is key,' NEPCO said, adding that 'Reducing consumption during critical hours not only helps ensure uninterrupted supply but also protects the stability of the national grid.' The heatwave is expected to continue through Thursday, with similar conditions prevailing, hot over high terrain and extremely hot in other areas, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD). The JMD has also urged the public to take necessary precautions, including avoiding direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours, exercising caution on slippery roads during rainfall, and staying alert for potential flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas, particularly in the south and east.

Jordan, Egypt agree to boost cross-border electricity capacity to 2,000 MW — minister

AMMAN — Jordan and Egypt have agreed to increase their cross-border electricity interconnection capacity to 2,000 megawatts, as part of a broader push to strengthen energy cooperation and regional integration. Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yarub Qudah told Al Mamlaka TV that the agreement with Egypt also includes continued trilateral energy cooperation with Iraq. 'We have reached a consensus with Egypt to enhance the electrical link between the two countries, reaching 2,000 megawatts.' Jordan and Egypt have been exchanging electric power via a submarine cable operating at 400 kilovolts since 1999. This 13-kilometre cable runs across the Gulf of Aqaba with a capacity of 500 megawatts. The connection is part of the Eight-Country Interconnection Project, which includes Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Libya and Turkey. He added that technical committee from the two countries will hold meetings later this year to discuss transport and labour issues. Qudah said that the volume of Jordanian-Egyptian trade has increased by a more than 30 per cent increase in in 2024. 'Jordanian exports to Egypt also rose by 30 per cent, [and this is] a strong indicator of the growing opportunities for Jordan's private sector in the Egyptian market. He emphasised the strategic importance of easing trade barriers and enhancing mutual market access, saying, 'Jordan can serve as Egypt's gateway to the Levant, while Egypt can be Jordan's bridge to the African continent, a promising market with vast potential.' The two sides also signed nine cooperation agreements across several sectors on Tuesday, including industry, economy, local development, tourism, and energy. The agreements were finalised during the 33rd session of the Jordanian-Egyptian Higher Committee, held in Amman and chaired by Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan and his Egyptian counterpart Mostafa Madbouly.
