South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen shocked the world last week when he announced his sudden retirement from international cricket. Klaasen, 33, played 4 Tests, 60 ODIs and 58 T20Is for the Proteas, scoring more than 3,000 runs across all three formats of the game. Klaasen has finally broken his silence regarding his decision to call it quits, saying for a long time, he didn't care if 'South Africa won or lost'. Klaasen also stated that he had the intention of continuing until the 2027 ODI World Cup, but the exit of head coach Rob Walter as the white-ball coach and his omission from the central contracts list forced him to bid adieu to international cricket. 'I felt for a long time that I didn't really care about any of my performances and whether the team won or not. That's the wrong place to be. I had a long conversation with Rob before the Champions Trophy, and I told him I didn't feel good in my heart about what was going on. I wasn't enjoying it that much,' Klaasen told Rapport. 'We talked nicely, we planned everything nicely up to and including the World Cup in 2027. So when he finished as a coach, and the negotiations with CSA over contracts didn't go as planned, it made my decision a lot easier,' added Klaasen. It must be mentioned that Klaasen had called time on his Test career in 2024 and right after the IPL this year, the wicketkeeper-batter called it quits in both the white-ball formats for South Africa. Klaasen amassed 2141 runs in the 60 ODIs he played in. The right-hander was known for his brute power, as he had a knack for taking down spinners in the middle overs. His best was displayed during an ODI against Australia where he played a knock of 174 at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. "I had done my calculation of the last two overs, Bhuvi likes to bowl yorkers so I had planned to get at least 16-17 runs from him. My calculation was that in the last over our target should be 24 runs in 6 balls. I got only 13 from Bhuvi's over though, so the final over runs needed was 30," said Shashank. "Mentally, my mind was ready to get a first ball yorker from Hazelwood. So I had positioned myself but I never anticipated a full toss one, that too on my thigh pad. Now I feel, if I would have connected it, even if I got it on the handle of the bat, I would have got maximum, because the fine-leg was near. I was hoping for a wide from him but it never came. When I saw the scoreboard stating the last ball needed 12 runs, I knew it's all over. People appreciated my batting wherever I have gone but all are reminding me of that one full toss miss. Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah (File photo) NEW DELHI: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday defended the decision to go ahead with the event to felicitate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) players in front of the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha despite a stampede outside the nearby Chinnaswamy Stadium, the team's home ground. On June 4, along with the ceremony to felicitate RCB on clinching their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title, a celebration was also held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a large number of fans thronged, leading to stampede, in which 11 people died and 56 were injured. "Actually at 3:50 pm, deaths were reported at the hospital. I got to know only at 5:45 pm. Until then, I did not know about the stampede and deaths," news agency PTI quoted Siddaramaiah as saying. He was speaking to reporters during a visit to Mysuru. The chief minister also clarified that the ceremony at the Vidhana Soudha was by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and that he attended the programme only as an invitee. "The KSCA secretary and treasurer met and invited me. It was not organised by us. They had, and I was invited. They told me that the governor would also come. So, I had gone. DCP's letter surfaces Siddaramaiah's remarks come even as a letter by DCP (Vidhana Soudha security) to the secretary to the Karnataka government's Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR), surfaced . The letter warned against organising the function hastily, and highlighted that the force did not have an adequate number of personnel to provide security for a ceremony where a large number of people would gather, at short notice. This in response to the DPAR seeking the DCP's opinion on holding the felicitation event on the grand stairs of the Vidhana Soudha to honour the RCB players. "RCB has a fan following across the country. Organising the event in a hurry on the grand stairs of Vidhana Soudha will lead to lakhs of cricket fans arriving there. This will lead to problems in 'bandobast' (arrangement) since there is a shortage of officers/personnel," the DCP's letter read. The officer further said if the event is organised, passes for visitors to Vidhana Soudha should be completely stopped. Also, as there were chances of the secretariat staff getting their family members for the event, he suggested an order aimed at ensuring this doesn't happen. The officer also sought a holiday in the afternoon for secretariat staff to ensure that they too don't come there. The DCP also called for installation of more CCTV cameras in the vicinity of Vidhana Soudha - which is a vital installation - and nearby places in view of the large gatherings expected.
