Bakers@70 gallery and event space opens in Fishguard

Bakers in Fishguard will open its doors today, Saturday, July 26, with an exhibition of work by local artist Marilyn Collins.
This is the first show in the new galley space at 70 West Street.
(Image: Western Telegraph) Marilyn's exhibition Tree conversation is an exhibition of sculpture, film and text, 'opening up a dialogue with the non-human beings who share our planet, examining our common ground'.
It is open from midday to 6pm from Saturday, July 26 to Sunday, August 3.
During the exhibition there will be a series of walks and events including storytelling by Sonia Sophia at 3pm on Saturday 26, an evening walk starting from the gallery at 7.30pm on Sunday, July 27, and a 75 minute storytelling meditation walk with Sonia Sophia starting at 6.15pm on Tuesday, July 29.
(Image: Western Telegraph) There will also be an artist talk with artist with Marilyn Collins at 7pm on Thursday, July 31 and an evening walk with the artist starting at 7.30pm on August 2.
After Marylin's exhibition the gallery will then be available to other artists and creatives to use for exhibitions, at a weekly rate, or to hold small events.
The idea from the new venue came from artist Trina Pittman-Hayes and husband Martin.
They moved into 70 West Street last November.
(Image: Western Telegraph) 'We wanted somewhere with studio space for me,' said Trina. 'But it is such a good space we though t it would be better used for everybody as a gallery space.'
The ground floor of the building had formerly used as a clothes shop, a music shop and a shop selling antiques and bric a brac. The previous owner had renovated with the view to making it into a café when lockdown struck.
When Trina and Martin moved back to Fishguard, they had lived in the town during the 90s, they could see that it was perfect studio or gallery space.
(Image: Western Telegraph) 'It was almost set up to be a self-contained galley space,' said Trina, a retired art teacher who began he career at Ysgol Bro Gwaun.
'We though it seemed a shame in way not to use it more widely and get people to have exhibitions here as well. I had done similar in Cheltenham and thought it was a good idea.'
Artists can also rent accommodation at Bakers with a view to putting on an exhibition at the end of their stay.
(Image: Western Telegraph) The new gallery is the latest addition to Fishguard's thriving cultural scene.
'People are discovering Fishguard and realising it is a nice place to come to,' said Martin.
'We have a quality cinema, good bars and cafes and it is great for culture and music.
'If you se something up here everybody wants to know and get involved. Its nice, it's a supportive community.'

"It meant there was a lot to sort out to make the show the best it possibly could be, but being that busy actually helped me. I loved going into work – not because it was an escape from what was going on at home, but because it gave me structure and normality. And it meant that I didn't have time to think about what was to come for Fiona. For both of us," he said.

"We have learnt a lot, especially what not to do, it was our first proper veggie patch so we were very excited to make sure it was abundant with veg. "But in our excitement we over planted and didn't create enough space between each veg, but it looked stunning especially the kale & cabbages with their gigantic, jungle like leaves. Garnant bar owner hits back at concerns over music festival

The landlord of the Wing and Prayer Sports Bar in Garnant has confirmed that the upcoming music festival will go ahead as planned, following a positive meeting with local authorities. Luke Martin, who runs the sports bar on Cwmamman Road said he was "delighted" after receiving confirmation from Carmarthenshire County Council, police, licensing officers and environmental health teams that the Garnant Music Festival has the green light to proceed from August 14 to August 17. This follows concerns from Cllr Kevin Madge and some residents of the Garnant neighbourhood expressing their worries regarding noise disruption. Cllr Madge previously expressed frustration at what he described as a lack of consultation with Cwmamman Town Council, calling the licensing arrangements "ridiculous." However, Mr Martin has reassured residents that the festival will be conducted in a "respectable manner". Mr Martin said: 'We are delighted to inform all concerned parties that, following a very successful meeting with the local authority, police, licensing officers, and environmental officers, we have officially received the green light to proceed with the music festival. 'This is a significant milestone, and we are extremely pleased with the positive outcome and the collaborative spirit shown by all involved. 'We look forward to delivering a safe, well-managed, and memorable event for everyone. Thank you for your continued support.' He added: 'We are working with a local radio station, Cwmamman mayor Gordon Jones and locals to make this event run smooth and provide a safe place for everyone to come and enjoy.' Mr Martin also raised concerns over why Cllr Madge is not backing a local community event, despite showing support to similar events in the community over the summer months. Cllr Madge, who covers Garnant on Carmarthenshire County Council, said he wasn't against young people having a place to go out, yet believed that people living in residential areas could be negatively impacted. As preparations continue, the Wing and Prayer team say they are focused on working with the community to ensure the festival is a success for both attendees and local residents.
