India-Pak ceasefire an understanding, not agreement: BJP reiterates Centre's stand

India Today11-05-2025
BJP general secretary BL Santhosh on Sunday said that the ceasefire between India and Pakistan should be seen as an 'understanding' and not an agreement. His remarks came a day after India and Pakistan reached an understanding late Saturday to halt all firings and military actions on land, air, and sea with immediate effect.
advertisementIndia has consistently referred to the development as an 'understanding' and has never officially termed it an agreement. The ceasefire followed four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes that had pushed both nations to the brink of full-scale war.The announcement was first made by US President Donald Trump, who claimed the ceasefire was achieved through US mediation.
"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE," he said. However, in a short announcement after Trump's remarks, Foreign Secretary Misri said the directors general of military operations of India and Pakistan agreed on the understanding during a call this afternoon."The Director General of Military Operations of Pakistan called the Director General of Military Operations of India at 1535 hours IST earlier today. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time today," Misri told the media at around 6 pm.advertisementJust hours after the understanding was reached, multiple drone sightings and explosions were reported in Jammu and Kashmir, triggering a response from Indian air defence systems.India later accused Pakistan of breaching the understanding. At a media briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, 'For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding arrived at earlier this evening between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan. This is a breach of the understanding.'Misri added that the Indian armed forces were responding 'adequately and appropriately' and emphasised that India took the violations 'very, very seriously.'Despite the breach, the overall security situation across India's western border states remained stable through the night of May 10–11, with no reported incidents of fire, enemy contact, or hostile movement. The understanding by India and Pakistan to stop military actions came hours after their militaries targeted each other's installations in a phase that marked the most severe confrontation following India's 'Operation Sindoor' launched on May 7, targeting nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir(PoK). The operation was launched in strong retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed.Tune InTrending Reel

CM Stalin writes to PM Modi; seeks urgent relief as US tariffs threaten TN exports, jobs

The Tamil Nadu government has raised an alarm over the severe implications of the United States' 25 per cent tariff on Indian exports, warning that the proposed escalation to 50 per cent could devastate the state's manufacturing sector and cost millions of jobs. In a detailed letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin highlighted that Tamil Nadu's dependence on the US market is higher as compared to other Indian states. While 20 per cent of India's total goods exports worth $433.6 billion in 2024-25 went to the US, Tamil Nadu sent 31 per cent of its $52.1 billion exports there. This heavy reliance, the Chief Minister warned, makes Tamil Nadu particularly vulnerable to tariff shocks. The most affected sectors include textiles, apparels, machinery, auto components, gems and jewellery, leather, footwear, marine products, and chemicals. All of these are labour-intensive industries where any decline in exports would swiftly translate into mass layoffs. The textile industry, which accounts for 28 per cent of India's exports in the sector and employs nearly 75 lakh people in the state, faces an especially grave threat. Officials estimate that as many as 30 lakh jobs are at immediate risk if tariffs are doubled to 50 per cent. To cushion the blow, CM Stalin urged the Centre to take urgent corrective measures. These include rectifying the GST inverted duty structure for the man-made fiber value chain by bringing it under a uniform 5 per cent GST slab, exempting import duty on all varieties of cotton, and providing collateral-free loans of up to 30 per cent under the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) with a 5 per cent interest subvention and a two-year moratorium on repayment. Further demands include enhancing RoDTEP (Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products) benefits to 5 per cent and extending pre and post-shipment credit facilities to all textile exports, including yarn. Industry consultations revealed similar challenges in other sectors as well. To provide relief, CM Stalin requested the Union Government to launch a special interest subvention scheme for exporters hit by tariffs, accelerate Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to offset market risks, and announce a financial relief package similar to the COVID-era moratorium on principal repayments. The letter also drew parallels with Brazil, which recently introduced tax deferrals and credits to support its exporters. Warning of an unprecedented crisis threatening Tamil Nadu's manufacturing sector, CM Stalin called for urgent intervention from PM Modi in consultation with ministries and industry stakeholders. He assured the Centre of Tamil Nadu's full cooperation in implementing national-level measures to safeguard livelihoods and preserve the competitiveness of Indian exports.

Mass grave row: K'taka govt backs Dharmasthala, will take action against those who misled, says Minister Hebbalkar

In the wake of the politics and controversy surrounding the issue, the Karnataka government on Saturday reiterated that it stands firmly with the Dharmasthala pilgrimage centre and assured that action will be taken against those who misled the government in this regard. Speaking to the media in Udupi on Saturday, Women and Child Welfare Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar said, 'Our government stands with Dharmasthala. The unknown complainant is narrating hundreds of fictitious stories. We will not spare those who misled the government.' 'Dharmasthala is a sacred place. Attempts are being made to defame it. Despite the excavation of burial sites one after another, nothing substantial has been found. The government will always stand with Dharmasthala,' she added. 'A bundle of lies was propagated on social media about the temple town. Later, the BJP picked up the allegations and is now shedding crocodile tears. The matter was discussed at both national and international levels. Those who indulged in defaming Dharmasthala will be punished,' Hebbalkar stated. 'The investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is progressing. Many have been levelling accusations and attacking the government. To put an end to speculations and allegations, Home Minister G. Parameshwara constituted the SIT. The issue was raked up deliberately, and it should end now,' she said. 'Let the BJP make claims on hundreds of issues. The party is behind the unknown complainant and the masked man. The SIT has been formed to put an end to all the drama surrounding this matter. I am a devotee of Lord Manjunatha. I have unflinching faith in the sacred Dharmasthala pilgrimage centre. I fully endorse the statement of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar,' Hebbalkar added. 'The government is committed and concerned. Dharmasthala is a place where 'Dharma' is upheld. Let all actions that bring disrepute to Dharmasthala come to an end,' she stated. She also urged that justice should be delivered in the Sowjanya murder case and in other cases reported from Dharmasthala. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated on Friday that action will be initiated against those who indulged in carrying out propaganda against the Hindu pilgrimage centre Dharmasthala in the alleged mass grave case. 'The government is considering taking action against those who have lied and spread misinformation in connection with the Dharmasthala case,' he had announced. Dy CM Shivakumar said, 'This is not a matter for or against Dharmasthala. All procedures must be carried out lawfully. I have observed Dharmasthala very closely. I have faith and confidence in the devotion, reverence, and practices there. I believe that in the coming days, the investigation will reveal the conspiracy that took place. Regarding this matter, our Home Minister G. Parameshwara will present the facts before the state by responding in the Assembly.' Meanwhile, the Karnataka BJP unit launched the 'Dharmasthala Chalo' campaign on Saturday morning to counter the alleged conspiracy surrounding the mass grave case. The campaign was flagged off at the Nelamangala toll on the outskirts of Bengaluru. In a major development, on July 11, the unidentified complainant in the case, who is a lower caste Hindu, had claimed that he was forced to bury several bodies of women and girls who were raped and murdered in Dharmasthala village. He appeared before a court in Karnataka's Mangaluru district and recorded his statement. The man gave his statement before Principal Civil Judge and First Class Judicial Magistrate. The development has sparked a major controversy. He requested that the police exhume the bodies in his presence. Even as 17 burial sites were excavated, the authorities could not find any strong evidence. Retired Supreme Court judges and activists demanded a SIT probe monitored by the Supreme Court or the High Court into the shocking case, allegedly involving many women, girls and destitute men. While the state government has followed the rule of law and allowed a probe into the alleged mass murders, the Opposition BJP has accused it of giving in to anti-Hindu forces and demanded an interim report from the Home Minister.

Analysing the entry of foreign higher education institutions in India

India's higher education sector has grown remarkably, boasting 1,168 registered universities and 45,473 colleges serving millions of students. Despite this expansive network, the government's move to allow foreign universities to establish campuses in India raises some concerns. Studying abroad Each year, eight to 10 lakh Indian students choose to pursue higher education abroad, even as over 4.33 crore students enroll in institutions within India. However, the decision to study overseas isn't driven by academic quality alone. Many of those who can afford the high costs often see international education as a worthwhile investment. What they're really seeking is not just a degree but the experience of living in a new culture, building global networks, and gaining professional exposure, which cannot be replicated by foreign campuses located within India. Career prospects also play a significant role. Many students believe they stand a better chance of securing high-paying jobs in developed economies after graduation. In fact, education often becomes a stepping stone toward long-term goals like permanent residency in or citizenship of countries such as the U.S., U.K., Canada, or Australia, which attract students with their stronger economies, higher salaries, and robust career opportunities. While foreign universities operating in India may offer excellent academic programmes, they could fall short of delivering these broader, more aspirational benefits. Challenges The idea of global institutions setting up campuses in India may sound progressive or even visionary, but it comes with several serious concerns that deserve closer examination. A pressing issue is the potential financial drain without corresponding benefits to the local education ecosystem. Foreign universities will likely repatriate profits to their home countries instead of reinvesting in India. In contrast, domestic institutions typically use their earnings for faculty development, fund research, and upgrade infrastructure. This means foreign campuses could create a steady outflow of resources that benefits their countries of origin more than India's education sector. Another major concern is the limited alignment of these campuses with the real aspirations of Indian students. Indian students seek overseas education for immigration benefits, international job markets, and cultural exposure. Without these incentives, their appeal remains limited. There's also the risk of competitive displacement. India already boasts an extensive higher education network. Bringing in established global institutions could marginalise smaller or less-known Indian universities. The brand power of foreign universities might attract the best students and faculty, leaving local institutions to struggle for relevance and resources. Cost is another major factor. Global universities tend to operate on a high-cost model, charging tuition fees far above what most Indian institutions ask for. If they follow a similar pricing strategy here, access will likely be limited to affluent students, creating an elitist and exclusionary education system. Such a model goes against the broader national goal of inclusive and equitable education for all. Further, the long-term benefits of foreign campuses remain unproven. India already enables international education collaborations through IITs, IIMs, and other premier institutions. The effectiveness of standalone foreign campuses in significantly improving education standards remains uncertain, making the policy a risky experiment. Alternatives Given these concerns, India would do well to consider alternative strategies that enhance its higher education sector while maintaining economic and academic autonomy. A more sustainable approach would begin with strengthening Indian universities themselves. This means increasing funding, expanding research opportunities, and investing in faculty development so that domestic institutions can offer globally competitive education without depending on foreign players. Another promising strategy involves encouraging global collaborations within Indian campuses. Joint research projects, faculty exchange programmes, and integrated curricula can bring international standards and perspectives into Indian classrooms without leading to large-scale financial outflows. Technology also offers an effective and affordable pathway to global exposure. Virtual exchange programmes, international webinars, and global faculty lectures could offer students exposure to world-class education at lower costs, making international learning more accessible. Finally, if the objective is to facilitate global education, increasing scholarships for Indian students seeking international opportunities would be a more effective and targeted approach. The focus should be on strengthening Indian institutions, fostering international collaborations, and expanding global exposure more effectively. For now, this policy seems like a miscalculated opportunity rather than a strategic advancement for India's higher education ecosystem. (Views expressed are personal) P. John J.
