Lake Victoria wins Irish 1,000 Guineas in style
Lake Victoria withstood a strong challenge from 50-1 outsider California Dreamer to take victory in the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh.
Like Field of Gold in the Irish 2,000 Guineas on Saturday, the 10-11 shot was out to rebound from a disappointing display at Newmarket.
Aidan O'Brien's filly had been unbeaten, including a win at the Breeders' Cup, prior to the 1,000 Guineas this month, but came in sixth out of 10 runners.
In an impressive response under Ryan Moore, the three-year-old had to be patient before showing her class, riding along the rail before gliding ahead of California Dreamer to win by two-and-a-quarter lengths, with Cercene (20-1) in third.
"She ran beautifully today," Moore told RTE Sport after winning this race for the fourth time.
"She's come on massively from Newmarket. It's really exciting."
It was an 11th win in this race for O'Brien but his first since 2021.

One national analyst believes that Notre Dame football will be a powerhouse going forward
This past season was an eye-opener for many Notre Dame football fans, and the haters as well. Many didn't think that the Irish were good enough to make the College Football Playoff due to an early-season loss to Northern Illinois, and even though they got in, those same people believed it would be a quick exit for Marcus Freeman's group. Well, that wasn't exactly the case, as they beat two Big Ten teams in Indiana and Penn State, and the SEC Champion Georgia on its way to the CFP championship game. Advertisement While one season doesn't define a program, it was eye-opening and enough to impress On3's J.D. Pickell. He went on to say that he 'doesn't see a clear governor on Notre Dame' to becoming a powerhouse in college football. Pickell mentions factors like Freeman, the influx of talent via recruiting, and being a destination for players who enter the transfer portal that give him no reasons to think this won't happen. With the change to the CFP format going to straight seeding, the conference hurdle is no longer an issue, making Notre Dame's path to a title much easier. It's hard to disagree with Pickell's assessment of the Irish's current situation, but you have to give a ton of credit to Freeman for what he has built over his first three seasons. While losses to Marshall and NIU weren't ideal, it hasn't stopped the vision that the head coach has created, and we are starting to see the fruits of his labor in South Bend. ESPN's FPI has Notre Dame as one of the top teams nationally entering 2025
It very much seems like the 2024 season for Notre Dame football was its return to relevance tour, as the Irish defeated two Big Ten teams (Indiana and Penn State), the SEC Champion Georgia Bulldogs, and played the closest to Ohio State of any team in the College Football Playoff alone. It was a great season for Notre Dame, and while it didn't come back to South Bend with a championship, it sure showed every across the country that they have everything it takes to win a title. ESPN thinks that the Irish are back as well, as in its updated Football Power Index for the upcoming 2025 season has them as its No. 7 team. Advertisement They project Notre Dame to have a 9.3-2.7 record, meaning they'll either have 9 or 10 wins on the year. The FPI gives the Irish a 7% chance to go undefeated, trailing only Texas and Ohio State for the top percentage in the country. Right now it looks like the Irish should make a return to the CFP as well, as ESPN gives them a 45.6% chance to compete in the playoff. A back-to-back trip to the title game isn't out of the question, as the FPI believes that theres a 7.3% chance for that to happen, but just a 2.7% chance to win it. Multiple other teams have a higher chance to make it that far, but like last year, Notre Dame has the ability to buck the computers and make a run. The FPI's favorite right now are the Longhorns, as they give them almost a 25% chance to win the national championship this coming season. Looking at Notre Dame opponents, Texas A&M and Miami both check in right behind the Irish at No. 8 and No. 9 respectively. USC is lower at No. 19, while Arkansas is No. 22 and Boise State is No. 40. There shouldn't be any questions about Notre Dame's strength of schedule, as they'll play multiple top teams this fall, but as of right now, ESPN's FPI believes that the Irish are better than each of their opponents. Top Illinois wide receiver Quentin Burrell sets visit to a Notre Dame football camp
Top Illinois wide receiver Quentin Burrell sets visit to a Notre Dame football camp Notre Dame has added another participant to its Irish Invasion recruiting event, as Class of 2027 wide receiver Quentin Burrell is returning to South Bend for another visit this weekend. The Mount Carmel (Chicago, IL) product visited Notre Dame in April after receiving an offer from the Fighting Irish on St. Patrick's Day. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound four-star prospect is the second-ranked high school player in Illinois, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Burrell has a plethora of offers from major schools, such as Michigan, Penn State, Auburn, Ole Miss and Washington. He has not taken any visits in the last month-plus, but he plans to be busy visiting in June, including a camp at Ohio State. He plans to compose a list of top schools by the end of the summer, and the Irish are well-positioned to make that list. 'I think with how everybody has been around and interacting with me, I feel like Notre Dame has a pretty big shot' he said. Burrell, who won a state championship in 2024, caught 75 passes for 1,257 yards and 18 touchdowns as a sophomore.
