I'm a Pope lookalike who's never actually been booked as the Pope

Metro22-04-2025

A rent-a-Pope lookalike who's never been booked as the Pope and looks more like Jim Bowen than the Pope says it might not be too long until he hangs up his own Pope's cassock.
Brian Holdom has worked as a lookalike for 20 years, bringing Henry VIII, Blofeld from James Bond, and Winston Churchill to events, parties, weddings and more.
The 78-year-old worked in sales and marketing before turning his hand to the lookalike industry, after a friend told him he could make money out of his more than passing resemblance to actor Donald Pleasence.
Despite getting fed up of being approached for autographs over the years – and seeing people get annoyed when he revealed he was not in fact the actor who starred in You Only Live Twice – Brian decided to create his own Blofeld character and turned his mistaken identity into a globetrotting career.
Brian was starring as a Pope in a play at his local theatre about 12 years ago when one of his fellow cast members told him he looked a bit like Pope Francis, who became head of the Catholic Church in 2013 and died on Easter Monday aged 88.
He decided to add the Pope to his repertoire and popped some pictures onto his website – but Brian, from Croydon in south London, tells Metro he's never actually been hired to play the pontiff.
'I performed in a local play, and people were saying at the time when I got the costume on, people were reacting differently around me,' he said.
'People were saying 'you do realise you do actually look like the current Pope', so because I do the other characters I thought I'll add it to my website as a bit of fun.
'I've never actually performed as the Pope as a lookalike though.
'I've had several enquiries over the years but for whatever reason I've never been able to take them up on it.
'There hasn't been much call for the Pope at corporate events and parties, which is what I do the most, the enquiries for the Pope were usually for long shots for films and documentaries.'
This is the first time one of Brian's lookalike subjects has passed away during his career.
His other real-life subjects, Henry VIII and Winston Churchill, died a very long time before he started working as a lookalike, and the characters he plays, Blomfeld from James Bond and The Penguin from Batman, are timeless.
Brian hasn't decided yet whether he will stop offering his services as a Pope lookalike now that Pope Francis has passed away, but seeing as he's never had a paid job as the Pope, his death won't have an impact on his business.
'My main characters which get the most bookings are Blofer, Churchill and Henry VIII in that order,' he explained.
'The most memorable Blofel was played by Donald Pleasence who died several years ago, and he's fictional which immortalised him.
'I was only 19 years old when Churchill died, so I wasn't playing the character then.
'But as I get older and because I've been doing Blofeld for so long I was getting a bit bored of him.
'I have much more fun as Churchill, he's a much warmer character and has great appeal, and the Pope was a nice chap.'
Brian says he's considering when to hang up his cassock and other costumes, and is waiting for his body to tell him when it's time to pack it in. More Trending
'The reason I still do it is it's so much fun. I wouldn't have been able to go to so many places and events in the normal run of life,' he explained.
'I've been over the world, across America and Europe, it's just remarkable.
'Working as a sales director of a company I look back at the meetings and presentations and they were very theatrical in their own way, so I think this was in me looking to get out.'

Antiques Roadshow guest says 'granny will eat her words' after 'costume' jewellery valuation

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info A guest on BBC's Antiques Roadshow was left speechless, when what was believed to be a piece of costume jewellery turned out to be a rare and valuable emerald ring, fetching far more than anticipated. The stunning revelation unfolded in an episode that first aired in October 2022 and was rebroadcast on Sunday (June 15). Filmed at Nottingham's historic Wollaton Hall, the episode featured an array of fascinating items, including Jack Nicholson's Batman mask, poignant poetry, and personal effects brought over by Ugandan Asians fleeing their country in 1972. Yet, it was the jewellery appraisal by expert John Benjamin that truly astonished one family. Two cousins brought forward a collection of family heirlooms that had been passed down through the generations. Their eclectic mix included a gold novelty pencil, a brooch with a fly perched on a flower, and the green stone ring that was the subject of much surprise, reports the Express. (Image: BBC) The guests shared that many of the pieces came from their great-great-great grandmother, born in 1858, with one particularly interesting item being a pencil shaped like a mountaineer's ice pick, engraved with the names of French mountains. "One assumes that the person who owned this originally was a mountaineer who went on this pioneering expedition," John explained. "And he climbed all these mountains and thought, right, when I get back to London, I'm going to commission a company - Hunt and Roskell - to make a gold novelty pencil fashioned as an ice pick." He traced the origins of this distinctive item back to 1879 and estimated its value to be in the range of £1,500 to £2,000. Benjamin was equally captivated by the next article, a Victorian brooch featuring a fly perched on a blossom. "You can see it's a fly and a flower that looks to me a little bit like, I don't know, it could be a crocus," he commented. The brooch, which was embellished with malachite, jaspers, and lapis lazuli, struck him as "really unusual". (Image: BBC) He assigned a date of circa 1845 to the piece and valued it between £1,200 and £1,500. Yet, it was the last object - a green stone ring - that delivered the most astonishing revelation; a piece the family had long dismissed as mere costume jewellery. Passed down from their great-great aunt and presented to the guest's mother as a birthday gift, one family member speculated when asked about its authenticity: "Um, I think so. Yeah. It doesn't have a lot of weight in it." In an unanticipated twist, John announced: "It's an emerald! It is a splendid Colombian emerald. From South America, surrounded by old Victorian white brilliant-cut diamonds, set in 18 karat gold, crafted around approximately 1875 to 1880." The ring was valuated at an impressive £4,000, hiking the overall projected auction worth of the collection to £7,000. The revelation literally caused the guest's jaw to drop, as the prospective auction value was placed between £5,000 and £10,000. Overwhelmed with joy, the guest exclaimed: "Oh my God. Thank you. Thank you. I'm going to tell Granny now. She'll be eating her words." Antiques Roadshow can be viewed on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Huge shock as ITV Coronation Street legend collapses in new spoiler video

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A new Coronation Street spoiler video reveals the moment Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) collapses in front of her family. Last year, Metro exclusively revealed that the iconic character was set to be diagnosed with young-onset dementia. The storyline divided fans – who were pleased that Sue was finally being given her place in the spotlight – but furious that Debbie would ultimately be killed off. Despite the overwhelming number of viewers opposing the plot, it was officially confirmed in January, and within a matter of weeks the character began to suffer memory loss. Her condition was then officially confirmed by a private doctor, with only her younger brother Carl (Jonathan Howard) present. She's since concealed it from all of her family, and ended her relationship with partner Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) for fears he would have to one day become her carer. She also felt like brother Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) was already going through enough, following his cancer diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy. In upcoming scenes, she suffers another setback. When she arrives at her Chariot Square Hotel and spots Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey) at the bar, she challenges him for drinking underage. Debbie's behaviour quickly becomes erratic, and she smashes a glass on the bar. A stunned Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) watches on, and later in the week, she worries when Debbie forgets to pay in the cafe. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? An awards ceremony then gets underway at Speed Daal, and a jealous Debbie watches on as Ronnie laughs with Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson). She also spots Carl having an intimate conversation with Kevin's wife Abi (Sally Carman-Duttine), and they worry that their flirty behaviour has been spotted. More Trending Suddenly, Debbie collapses, as shown in the spoiler video above. When she regains consciousness, her concerned family gather around. They reveal that she's going to the hospital, and she tells them to stop, bravely opening up about her dementia. View More » How will the family react? The Scotland and Rangers icon headed off from Belfast this morning to take on the 555-mile, six-day ride around Ireland as part of the Doddie'5 Lions Challenge. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 5 Ally McCoist is taking part in the charity cycle around Ireland 5 But he had to deal with a few mechanical issues before he set off 5 And the group are doing it to help raise funds in memory of Doddie Weir Joining McCoist in the fundraising effort are Scotland rugby great Kenny Logan, his wife and broadcaster, Gabby, former rugby stars Mel Deane and Will Greene and actor Jamie Bamber. The group will cover up to 100 miles a day in memory of Scotland legend Doddie Weir, who sadly passed away in 2022, and to raise money for research into motor neurone disease. So far, the challenge has raised more than £300,000 for the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, with hopes of hitting the £500,000 mark before the final leg. The ride will finish in Dublin on Friday where the team will deliver the match ball to the Aviva Stadium ahead of the British and Irish Lions' clash with Argentina. But he revealed his close pal nearly never made it all – because he kept fiddling with his bike's settings! Logan said: 'Ally's been out and about but his bike broke down the other day. 'I told him not to trust himself to check the batteries on his fancy gears – someone else needs to do that for him! 'We've lost a few to injury and it just shows how demanding this is going to be. 'I'm not going to lie – I've had my own aches and pains. Rangers legend Ally McCoist labelled 'Scotland's James Bond' as he takes an Easter dip in freezing cold loch 'No major injuries thankfully, but I've definitely been reminded why I probably shouldn't be moving this much at my age! 'I'm most nervous about the hills. 'I convinced myself Ireland was flat – it's definitely not. But nerves are good. 'I've always had them before a big challenge, and it means I care.' This year's event is both a tribute to Weir and a rallying cry to continue his legacy. 5 Former Scotland star Kenny Logan and his wife Gabby are part of the crew 5 And the group hope to raise almost £500,000 for two charities Logan added: 'The support's been incredible. 'We've still got time to push, and every penny counts. 'Since Doddie died, awareness has grown massively – but we still need to fund research. 'The Foundation has committed nearly £20 million already, which is phenomenal, but it's only the beginning. 'Doddie would be proud – but he'd be telling us to go further and faster. 'That's why we're doing this.' Seven Scots are in the Lions squad for the tour after Zander Fagerson withdrew due to injury. Logan admits he's disappointed winger Darcy Graham never got the nod – but thinks there might be time yet for the Edinburgh flier to make the plane to Australia. He added: 'I still think Darcy will go – there's a lot of rugby to be played between now and then, and there will be injuries. 'We've seen that with Zander missing out already. 'Overall it's great to see so many Scots in the squad – they'll be out to make their mark in Australia and put down a marker for the Test team.' All funds raised will support the Foundation's mission to find effective treatments – and ultimately a cure – for motor neurone disease.
