Mother of murdered Lahad Datu student prays for justice for Zara Qairina
Speaking during a vigil held in Lahad Datu last night, Siti Hamidah Jumari, 46, said she understands the pain Zara Qairina's mother is experiencing, having gone through a similar tragedy herself.
She said she sent her son, Mohamad Nazmie Aizzat Mohd Narul Azwan, 17, to school with high hopes that he would one day support the family.
"Raising a child is never easy. Since they were little, we wouldn't even let a mosquito land on them, and yet this is what happened to our child. In the blink of an eye, they're gone.
"What Zara Qairina's mother feels, I feel it too.
"We send our children to school for the sake of their future, but in the end, we're left with their lifeless bodies."
Hamidah said she was grateful that the perpetrators in her son's case had already been charged, thanks to the efforts of the police, who provided her with significant support.
She said this differs from Zara Qairina's case, a Form One student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan in Papar, as the truth behind what happened to her remains unknown.
"Let us all pray, especially us mothers. Insya-Allah, we pray for justice for Zara Qairina," she said.
Thirteen students, aged between 16 and 19, were jointly charged with the murder of Nazmie Aizzat at Dormitory Room 7 Resak and 5 Belian of the Lahad Datu Vocational College, between 9pm on March 21 and 7.38am on
March 22 last year.
They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of 30 to 40 years and up to 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.

Sabah Law Society to monitor inquest into Zara Qairina's death
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Law Society (SLS) will closely monitor the inquest and any subsequent legal proceedings into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, in the public interest. SLS president Datuk Mohamed Nazim Maduarin said they welcomed the Attorney-General's Chambers' (A-GC) decision to direct an inquest under Section 339(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code. An inquest is an independent judicial process that will examine the cause and circumstances of death, determine whether any criminal elements were involved, and ensure that all relevant facts are brought to light. Zara, 13, was found unconscious at her school, SMKA Tun Mustapha in Papar on July 16 and declared dead the following day at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here. "Our commitment is clear: justice must be done, and it must be seen to be done because when our children are not safe, nothing else matters. "The findings of the inquest will form the basis for the A-GC to decide whether prosecutions should be initiated. "We remind the public that whether or not prosecutions follow will ultimately depend on these findings and the sufficiency of evidence in law. "This sequence is essential to preserve the integrity of the justice process," he said in a statement. Mohamed also said SLS would like to remind everyone that bullying, whether physical, verbal, psychological, or online, has no place in any environment, least of all in schools. He added SLS through its Community Empowerment and Protection Subcommittee, which leads their initiatives on bullying prevention and response, will work with all stakeholders in Sabah to create safer educational environments. He said the recent amendments to the Penal Code (Sections 507B–G) represent a critical step forward in combating such conduct, criminalising a wide range of abusive behaviours and imposing serious penalties where they cause harm, including attempted or completed suicide.

‘Susu Borneo' syndicate from Sabah crippled
Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: MELAKA: Police have crippled a syndicate known as 'Susu Borneo' with the arrest of its four members, including a woman, on suspicion of stealing infant formula and powdered coffee worth RM12,600 from mini markets in Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang. Melaka Tengah Police Chief ACP Christopher Patit said the suspects, comprising a 50-year-old woman and three men aged between 23 and 33, were nabbed at a rented condominium in Kuala Lumpur around 12.05am on Aug 10. 'The arrests were made following two police reports lodged on Aug 2 regarding thefts at two mini markets in Taman Paya Emas and Bandar Baru Sungai Udang. 'He said based on intelligence gathered, the Criminal Investigation Department (D4) team from the Melaka Tengah Police Headquarters arrested two local males, as well as a Filipino man and woman,' he said in a press conference, Thursday. Christopher said a further probe led the police to locate the stolen formula milk at the condominium as well as in a car. He said the seized items included 72 boxes and 15 packets of infant formula, 12 tins of health milk and 22 packets of coffee drinks, as well as a car, four mobile phones, clothing, hats and tools believed to have been used in the thefts. 'This syndicate's modus operandi was to disguise themselves as customers, with the female suspect concealing the infant formula inside her clothes and trousers, while two male suspects served as lookouts on the left and right aisles of the shelves, and another waited outside the premises. 'Initial investigations revealed that the syndicate from Sabah has been active since 2011, and in the week before their arrest, they were believed to have committed 12 thefts at premises across the three states,' he said. Christopher added that further investigations showed three of the suspects had prior criminal records involving drug offences, theft, and causing injury. He said all suspects have been remanded from Aug 10 to Aug 15 for further investigation, with the case being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
