APG will boost regional power connectivity, energy security, says Fadillah
The Deputy Prime Minister said an enhanced memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the APG was set to be signed at the Asean Ministers on Energy Meeting in Kuala Lumpur in October, along with the formal endorsement of the terms of reference of the subsea power cable development framework.
"This critical advancement will undoubtedly propel our regional energy integration forward," he said at the welcoming dinner of the 43rd Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Energy here on Monday (June 16) night.
Fadillah, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said the APG was the cornerstone for cultivating a more resilient and sustainable energy future across Asean.
He described it as an infrastructure project with a vision of electricity flowing seamlessly across borders and shared energy security and prosperity.
"By interconnecting our national grids, we are creating the backbone of a truly integrated Asean energy market," he said.
Fadillah called for stronger political will, deeper technical cooperation and smarter investment strategies to fully realise the APG.
He said harmonised regulations, open and transparent markets and digital innovation were needed to make real-time regional power trading a reality.
"We need to embrace not just the hardware cables, substations and control systems, but also the software: governance frameworks, data sharing and mutual trust.
"In essence, the Asean Power Grid is about turning our diversity into strength. It is about leveraging our shared geography and complementary resources to build a future that is greener, more inclusive and more secure," he said.
He added that the APG enhanced MOU, coupled with the forthcoming Asean Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation 2026-2030 document, will be a powerful catalyst for economic growth across all Asean member states.

CFIL has attracted projects across energy transition, circular economy, sustainable agriculture, and biodiversity, including strategic initiatives like the ASEAN Power Grid. JC3 will also co-develop a unified Malaysian Taxonomy on Sustainable Finance, aligned with the ASEAN Taxonomy, and support the rollout of the National Sustainability Reporting Framework (NSRF) in the financial sector. It plans to publish the fourth JC3 Data Catalogue in November to address data gaps for climate risk assessment and transition planning. SC executive director and JC3 co-chair Salmah Bee Mohd Mydin noted that better climate-related data will improve adaptation financing and NSRF disclosures. Johor first state in country to start sustainable wastewater programme for industrial use
JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 11 — Johor is the first state in the country to launch a sustainable wastewater programme for industrial use, targeted as a cooling agent for the state's growing data centre industry. The programme is led by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) with the close collaboration of the Johor government. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said under the programme, Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd and agencies under Petra will supply up to 12 million litres of treated wastewater per day for reclaimed water plants that support data centre operations in Johor. 'The treated wastewater will be supplied through an integrated distribution system to the Water Reuse Plant at Bridge Data Centres (BDC) and Computility Technology (Malaysia) and Dayone Data Centre Malaysia II Sdn Bhd,' he told reporters at the Use of Alternative Water for the Data Centre Industry in Johor ceremony at the Doublethree by Hilton here today. Also present was Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said that the cooperation between the two governments is important to promote the sustainable growth of data centres in Johor without putting pressure on the state's water supply. 'This is one for the future as this water is not just thrown away, but will be recycled and used for industry players,' he said. Fadillah said that the effort should be emulated because as wastewater is effectively reused, reducing the demand for fresh water. He explained that the development of the data centre industry in the state is monitored by the Johor Data Centre Development Coordination Committee, which is responsible for ensuring that project development focuses on to the use of renewable energy to save electricity and water consumption. In line with the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) announced by the government recently, Fadillah said strategic cooperation between the federal and state governments is an important effort in driving Malaysia towards a more sustainable, resilient and progressive future. 'This initiative to use reclaimed water is in line with Priority D6 of the 13th RMK13, which among other things emphasises efforts to diversify water sources sustainably and reduce dependence on raw water,' he said, adding that it is also in line with the direction of the Water Transformation Roadmap 2040 (AIR2040) which recognises reclaimed water as an important alternative source for the water industry.

JC3 to develop Malaysian taxonomy on sustainable finance aligning with Asean taxonomy
KUALA LUMPUR: The financial regulators and industry will collaborate to co-develop the Malaysian Taxonomy on Sustainable Finance alongside relevant stakeholders and ministries through the Joint Committee on Climate Change (JC3). In a statement today, JC3 which is co-chaired by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) said the Malaysian Taxonomy will be aligned with the ASEAN Taxonomy. "The taxonomy will progress from a principles-based approach, to utilising science-based technical screening criteria and quantitative thresholds to advance the accuracy and quality of assessment," said the statement in conjunction with its 15th meeting held on Aug 7, 2025. According to JC3, the Climate Finance Innovation Lab (CFIL) which was launched in June 2025 has received strong interest from project owners and a wide range of potential funders. This includes strategic ASEAN projects such as the ASEAN Power Grid and 16 other projects across the four thematic areas namely energy transition, circular economy, sustainable agriculture as well as biodiversity and nature-based solutions, it added. The committee also pledged to support the collaborative efforts of the Advisory Committee on Sustainability Reporting (ACSR) in implementing the National Sustainability Reporting Framework (NSRF) across the financial sector. "JC3 is also exploring the development of a guidance document or use cases for the financial sector to assist industry players in meeting NSRF disclosure expectations. "In addition, the JC3 will be publishing the fourth iteration of the JC3 Data Catalogue in November this year in line with its continued commitment to address data challenges," it said. BNM assistant governor and JC3 co-chair, Madelena Mohamed said the strong interest in CFIL by project owners and the financial sector is encouraging, albeit broader and deeper industry participation is crucial. "We must act now and decisively by scaling up climate finance and nature-positive initiatives in Malaysia," she said. Meanwhile, SC executive director and JC3 co-chair, Salmah Bee Mohd Mydin said climate-related data continues to be an important focus area to ensure effective mobilisation of capital especially for adaptation financing.
