Jordanian food producers to spotlight local flavours at SIAL Canada

Jordan Times18-05-2025
AMMAN — A group of Jordanian food companies is preparing to take part in SIAL Canada, one of North America's premier food industry exhibitions, set to kick off Wednesday in Toronto.
The Kingdom's participation, organised by the Jordan Exporters Association (JEA), reflects ongoing efforts to expand the reach of Jordanian-made goods in the Canadian market.
SIAL Canada is known for attracting global attention and serves as a vital platform for networking and business development, the JEA said in a statement to The Jordan Times.
Ahmad Al Khudari, Chairman of the Association, said the Jordanian pavilion, spanning 126 square meters, will showcase a wide array of high-quality local products. He noted that Jordan has maintained a consistent presence at the event since 2012, citing its value in opening doors to North American markets.
Beyond promotion, the exhibition also offers Jordanian companies access to cutting-edge industry trends, innovations, and technologies, Al Khudari added. These insights, he stressed, are key to enhancing the competitiveness of Jordan's food sector internationally.
Canada, he said, remains a strategic export destination, particularly under the Jordan-Canada Free Trade Agreement, which came into effect in 2012. The agreement, the first of its kind between Canada and an Arab country, allows Jordanian products to enter the Canadian market tariff-free, offering a significant competitive advantage.
Haleem Abu Rahmeh, JEA Director General, echoed the sentiment, calling Canada a vital market. While initial efforts were modest, he said, persistent marketing and a focus on quality have positioned Jordanian products as strong contenders. 'Today, they are recognized for their excellence and competitive pricing,' Abu Rahmeh said, adding that interest in the Jordanian pavilion continues to grow each year.
He credited the growing popularity of Jordanian food products among Canadian importers and consumers to consistent quality and compliance with international standards.
Abu Rahmeh also reaffirmed the Association's commitment to promoting other high-potential sectors, including cosmetics, plastics, and agriculture.
With Canada's multicultural landscape and rising demand for Middle Eastern cuisine, Abu Rahmeh described the market as 'highly receptive' and stressed the importance of long-term strategies to secure Jordan's foothold.
He concluded by praising the Canadian Trade Centre for its role in strengthening bilateral trade ties and fostering cooperation between Jordanian and Canadian businesses.

Jordan, Russia sign visa waiver agreement to boost bilateral ties

AMMAN — Jordan and Russia signed a mutual visa waiver agreement on Wednesday, allowing citizens of both countries to travel without a visa. The agreement was announced during a joint press conference in Moscow by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The Cabinet had approved the agreement earlier this week, framing it as a step toward strengthening cooperation and opening new avenues for mutual interests. 'Jordan is committed to deepening its friendship with Russia,' Safadi said, adding that the visa exemption will help boost tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between our nations. Safadi also highlighted ongoing regional challenges, particularly the crisis in Gaza, according to the public service TV, Al Mamlaka. He reaffirmed Jordan's position, led by His Majesty King Abdullah, in calling for an end to the aggression and massacres in the Strip. Talks between Safadi and Lavrov also touched on efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged enclave. The two officials discussed expanding cooperation in various sectors. Safadi said both sides are looking forward to the upcoming session of the Jordanian-Russian High Committee for Economic and Trade Cooperation, scheduled to convene later this year. Jordan and Russia previously signed a visa waiver in 2017 for holders of diplomatic, official, and special passports. That agreement came into effect in January 2018.

World Bank continues to review restructuring of National Employment Programme

AMMAN — The World Bank is in the process of finalising a restructuring plan for its Employment and Skills Project in Jordan, aimed at boosting private sector job creation and enhancing workforce skills. Citing a World Bank document, Al Mamlaka said that the restructuring is currently under review for final approval, with the goal of signing it with the Jordanian government. The primary objectives of the restructuring are to "improve implementation efficiency, expand the scope of impact, and increase the number of beneficiaries." In particular, the restructuring focuses on better aligning workforce skills with the demands of the labour market. The document emphasises that the restructuring will retain the project's strategic goals, including supporting the employment of Jordanians, particularly targeting women and youth. These groups are central to the project's mission of expanding economic opportunities. The project has already made significant strides, according to the document. Key achievements include providing on-the-job training to thousands of beneficiaries and fostering stronger partnerships between the government and private sector. The project, the document said, has contributed to improving the management systems of government programmes tied to the labour market, notably through enhanced monitoring and follow-up mechanisms. It has also played a role in regulatory reforms designed to help employers more easily recruit skilled workers. Launched in April 2022 as part of Jordan's response to the COVID-19 crisis, the initiative was aimed at boosting job recovery and increasing employment among youth (ages 18 to 40) in the private sector. The restructuring follows a comprehensive review of the project's performance and progress, with a focus on streamlining activities and maximising the impact of financial resources. Earlier reports said that the World Bank had approved a $112 million funding package in December 2021 to support the project. Of that amount, $46.5 million (41.5 per cent) has already been disbursed. The National Employment Programme, which the project supports, provides wage subsidies, on-the-job training grants, and incentives for hiring women and people with disabilities. The programme aims to improve economic participation rates and ensure equal job opportunities. As part of the restructuring, the project's closure date will be extended to July 31, 2028. This extension will allow for the completion of remaining activities and the expansion of its impact to benefit as many individuals as possible, while ensuring that targeted performance indicators are met, Al Mamlaka said.
