Shanghai stocks hit over 3-1/2-year high on Fed rate-cut hopes

SHANGHAI/SINGAPORE: Mainland China and Hong Kong stocks rose for a third consecutive session on Wednesday, with the Shanghai benchmark hitting a more than 3-1/2-year high, as prospects of a Federal Reserve interest rate cut next month lifted investor sentiment.
At the midday break, the Shanghai Composite index was up 0.56% after hitting the highest level since December 13, 2021 in morning trade.
China's blue-chip CSI300 index climbed 0.92%.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index rose 1.88%.
Expectations have firmed for a Fed rate cut in September after the US consumer inflation report indicated the pass-through from President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs to goods prices has so far been limited.
With rising expectations of a Fed rate cut, risk appetite improved and 'emerging and developed equity markets resonated,' analysts at Guoyuan Securities said in a note.
The MSCI All Country World Index hit an all-time high.
Lifting market sentiment further, China said it will offer interest subsidies for businesses in eight consumer service sectors to support services consumption amid a slowing economy.
'China retains the fiscal firepower to stimulate growth and absorb slack from reduced exports should tariffs from the US be punitive,' said Vivek Bhutoria, portfolio manager for global emerging market equities at Federated Hermes.
'We believe the market has been over-discounting risks in relation to Chinese equities, and even if Trump levies punitive tariffs this week, China has the ability to grow its way to prosperity and, as such, as we are still positive on China.'
China's A shares have been trending higher in recent weeks, as investors priced in positive signals from a series of US-China trade talks.

China's top diplomat Wang arrives in India

NEW DELHI: China's top diplomat landed in neighbouring India on Monday, seeking to bolster long-fraught relations in the face of intense pressure and tariffs from the United States. Foreign Minister Wang Yi will hold talks with his counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and is also expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his three-day visit to New Delhi. Modi, according to Indian media, might also visit China this month. India's foreign ministry said in a social media post that 'important engagements of the India-China Special Representatives and on bilateral relations' were scheduled over the next two days. The world's two most populous nations are intense rivals competing for influence across South Asia, and fought a deadly border clash in 2020. Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi to visit India from Monday, China's foreign ministry says But caught in global trade and geopolitical turbulence triggered by US President Donald Trump's tariff war, the countries have moved to mend ties. Restarting border trade across their icy and high-altitude Himalayan border is expected to feature high on Wang's agenda. Its resumption would be significant for its symbolism, and follows agreements to return direct flights and issue tourist visas. India is part of the Quad security alliance with the United States, Australia and Japan, which is seen as a counter to China. Warming ties between China and India come as relations between New Delhi and Washington are strained. Trump has issued an ultimatum for India to end its purchases of Russian oil – a key revenue source for Moscow's war in Ukraine – or Washington will double new import tariffs on India from 25 percent to 50 percent. Indian hopes that a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin would ease pressure on New Delhi were dashed on Monday by US trade adviser Peter Navarro. 'If India wants to be treated as a strategic partner of the US, it needs to start acting like one,' he wrote in a sharply-worded column in the Financial Times. 'India acts as a global clearinghouse for Russian oil, converting embargoed crude into high-value exports while giving Moscow the dollars it needs,' he wrote. 'The proceeds flow to India's politically connected energy titans, and in turn, into Vladimir Putin's war chest,' he added, in an apparent swipe at India's big refiners, which include tycoon Mukesh Ambani. Navarro said the 50 percent tariff – due to begin on August 27 – will 'hit India where it hurts'.

Pakistan rupee continues upward momentum, marks 7th consecutive gain against US dollar

Rupee's Performance Against US Dollar Since 04 March 2025 Pakistani rupee started the week positive, marking its 7th consecutive gain against the US dollar. The local currency appreciated by 0.01% in the inter-bank market on Monday. At close, the rupee settled at 282.02, a gain of Re0.04. On Friday, the local unit had closed the session at 282.06. The rupee has maintained a positive trajectory against the greenback in recent days on account of improved sentiment in the currency market amid an ongoing crackdown by law enforcement agencies against illegal currency dealers and smugglers. During the previous week, the Pakistani rupee continued its merry run against the US dollar in the inter-bank market as it gained Re0.41 or 0.14%. The local unit closed at 282.06, against 282.47 it had closed the week earlier against the greenback, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). Internationally, the US dollar dithered on Monday ahead of a key meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiyy, while investors also looked ahead to the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium for more policy clues. Currency moves were largely subdued in the early Asia session, though the dollar steadied after last week's fall as traders further pared back bets of a jumbo Fed cut next month. The euro was little changed at $1.1705, while sterling edged up 0.07% to $1.3557. Against a basket of currencies, the US dollar advanced slightly to 97.85, after losing 0.4% last week. Markets are now pricing in an 84% chance the Fed would ease rates by a quarter point next month, down from 98% last week, after a raft of data including a jump in US wholesale prices last month and a solid increase in July's retail sales figures dimmed the prospect of an oversized 50-basis-point cut. The main event for investors on Monday is a meeting between Trump and Zelenskiy, who will be joined by some European leaders, as Washington presses Ukraine to accept a quick peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years. Trump is leaning on Zelenskiy to strike an agreement after he met Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin in Alaska and emerged more aligned with Moscow on seeking a peace deal instead of a ceasefire first. Oil prices, a key indicator of currency parity, edged up on Monday after White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said India's purchases of Russian crude were funding Moscow's war in Ukraine and had to stop. Traders were also watching for clues from a meeting later in the day between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as they attempt to reach a peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years. Brent crude futures rose 20 cents, or 0.3%, to $66.05 a barrel by 1208 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up 28 cents, or 0.45%, at $63.08. India's unemployment rate eases to 5.2% in July

NEW DELHI: India's unemployment rate fell to 5.2% in July from 5.6% in the previous month, the statistics ministry said on Monday, as rural hiring picked up ahead of the festival season and on agricultural activity. The jobless rate among those aged 15 years and above in rural areas fell to 4.4% from 4.9% in June, while it rose in urban areas to 7.2% from 7.1% in June, the data showed. Among urban youth aged 15 to 29 years, unemployment increased to 19.0% in July from 18.8% in June. In rural areas, the youth jobless rate declined to 13% from 13.8% in the previous month. It was 13.7% in May. The unemployment rate for the April-June period, the first quarter of current fiscal year, was estimated at 5.4% among those aged 15 years and above, the ministry said. India's federal government has announced plans to cut its goods and services tax by October, after rising tensions with the United States over steep tariff hikes announced by President Donald Trump on Indian goods, in a bid to shore up local manufacturing and support jobs. The labour force participation rate (LFPR) - the share of people aged 15 years or more working, seeking work or available for work in the population - rose to 54.9% in July from 54.2% in June, the ministry said. S&P Global Ratings on Thursday upgraded India's long-term sovereign credit rating to 'BBB' from 'BBB-', the first upgrade in 18 years, citing strong economic growth, improved monetary policy credibility, and sustained fiscal consolidation. India's real GDP growth averaged 8.8% between fiscal 2022 and 2024, the highest in Asia-Pacific, and is projected to grow at 6.8% annually over the next three years.
