Ron Howard's TIFF Thriller ‘Eden' Acquired By Vertical For Late Summer U.S. Theatrical Release
EXCLUSIVE: The Ron Howard-directed survival thriller Eden has been acquired in a U.S. rights deal by Vertical, with the distributor plotting an August 22 nationwide theatrical release.
Scripted by Noah Pink (Tetris) from a fact-based story he wrote with Howard, the drama from Imagine Entertainment and AGC Studios stars Jude Law (The Order), Ana de Armas (Ballerina), Vanessa Kirby (The Fantastic Four: First Steps), Daniel Brühl (All Quiet on the Western Front), Sydney Sweeney (Immaculate), Toby Wallace and Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front). They are the members of three parties who flee post-World War II civilization to start over and build paradise on the Galapagos Islands. It becomes a battle to survive the harsh elements, and each other. Bodies pile up.

The deal brings to an end an unexpectedly difficult road the film traveled in finding its way to a theatrical audience, considering its stellar cast, and the Oscar-winner Howard making his narrative follow-up to the acclaimed Thirteen Lives, another fact-based survival tale.
Eden went into Toronto last fall as one of the festival's highest-profile premiere titles, a tale Howard has wanted to tell since visiting the Galapagos on a family outing and hearing the story about 15 years ago. Pic suffered a tough break when, shortly into the premiere showing at Roy Thomson Hall when the propulsive narrative was just taking off, the film had to be halted and the lights turned back on because of a medical emergency suffered by a ticketholder. Eden never quite recaptured its momentum after the lengthy stoppage. Add to that the general wariness of distributors to take the plunge on an adult-themed survival thriller — even with that cast and a score by two-time Oscar winner Hans Zimmer — and it was a disheartening outcome. But a good movie is a good movie, and now Eden will get to prove itself before a theatrical audience.
'Thanks to our partners at AGC Studios, Vertical, and our amazing team at Imagine Entertainment, I'm thrilled to be able to share Eden with audiences in the U.S.,' Howard said in a statement. 'This story has been a passion project for me for years, rooted in the incredible true events of three wildly different groups of people who chose to leave modern society behind and recreate themselves on an uninhabited island in the Galapagos. The complexity of the characters and the collision of personalities that resulted are what drew me in, and I hope audiences connect with the profound themes of survival and human nature. It's a story that feels so relevant today, and I'm excited for audiences to experience it on the big screen.'
AGC Studios chairman and CEO Stuart Ford said the filmmaking team was 'delighted at Vertical's passion for the film and at their belief in the theatrical experience. We hope that US cinema audiences are going to be surprised and delighted at this dazzling, edgy and ultimately shocking story that Ron, Imagine and this amazing cast have boldly brought to the big screen.'
Vertical partner Peter Jarowey said the distributor 'couldn't be more excited to bring Eden to U.S. audiences. Ron Howard, a legendary filmmaker, delivers a masterful vision at the peak of his craft. It's a thrill to reunite with our friends at AGC and Jude following last year's The Order campaign, and we can't wait to collaborate with the exceptional talents of Ana, Vanessa, Daniel, and Sydney.'
Eden is produced by Howard, Brian Grazer, Karen Lunder, Ford, William M. Connor and Patrick Newall. The exec producers are Miguel Palos, Zach Garrett, Craig McMahon, Pink, Mathias Herndl, Namit Malhotra, David Taghioff, Masha Magonova and Matt Murphie.
AGC and Library Pictures International are principal financiers with additional financing by Medan Pictures, Copper Island Films and Elevate Production Finance and support from the Queensland Government through Screen Queensland's Production Attraction Strategy, the City of Gold Coast and the Australian Federal Government's Location Offset.
The deal was negotiated by Jarowey and SVP of Acquisitions Tony Piantedosi on behalf of Vertical, AGC EVP of Legal & Business Affairs Anant Tamirisa for AGC Studios, and CAA Media Finance.

Bryce Dallas Howard has a sixth sense about movie flops: 'You can always see it coming'
It would take more than a box office flop to fluster Bryce Dallas Howard. The Deep Cover star recently admitted that, as an actor who has been part of some of Hollywood's biggest franchises, she's developed what's basically a sixth sense when it comes to projects that won't work out. "You can always see it coming while you're making it," Howard recently told the Independent about movie flops like Argylle and The Lady in the Water. "I've never been shocked when something doesn't work. But I'm just an actor — you're there to serve a director's vision. If a movie doesn't turn out the way that you envisioned, you can barely feel disappointed because it's not yours. You're not the person who's building the thing." The ability not to take said failures personally is a trait that Howard says her father, Ron Howard, struggles with. The Jurassic World star recalled seeing her father break down emotionally when his 1992 period drama Far and Away, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, bombed at the box office. Howard shared that Ron went to Clint Eastwood for advice on how to deal with such a creative low in his career. "He said, 'Ronnie — a career is like a season of television. You've got 24 episodes, some of the episodes are going to be bad, some are going to be serviceable, maybe a little forgettable, and maybe five of those episodes are going to be really strong and last,'" Howard remembered. Fans can only hope that Howard hasn't foreseen a box office fail for her latest film, Deep Cover. Directed by Tom Kingsley, the action comedy follows three improv comics, led by Howard's comedy teacher, Kat, who get recruited by Detective Sergeant DS Billings (played by Sean Bean) for a sting operation. One of those students is Orlando Bloom's Marlon, a method actor who wants to be an A-list star like Al Pacino but lacks the skills to back up those dreams. And joining Marlon and Kat on this mission is their friend Hugh, played by Ted Lasso's Nick Mohammed, who happens to be an old friend of Kingsley's in real life. Surprisingly, for a film about improv comics, there wasn't much improvising in the movie, except for Mohammed. Hugh and Marlon "are not brilliant at improv," Kingsley previously told Entertainment Weekly. It's up to Howard's struggling-comedian-turned-teacher to keep them from getting into trouble on their mission. "She's trying to support her students," Kingsley added. "She's torn between wanting to help them do a good job and also trying to keep them all alive." The director notes that Howard, the last of the three main characters to be cast, adds a certain Hollywood star power to the mostly British ensemble. Still, one of his favorite days on set involved another American star close to the cast who visited while they were shooting in a corner store in Hackney. "Hackney is not a particularly fancy area of London, and it was surreal having Bryce and Orlando in that location, but then Katy Perry chose that day to visit the set," he revealed. "Having these massive global superstars in this tiny, rundown shop was insane to me."Deep Cover will premiere on Prime Video on June 12. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly

Sarah Jessica Parker Doesn't Take Photos With Fans
If you see Sarah Jessica Parker in person, you might be able to get her autograph — but don't get your hopes up for a photo. Sarah doesn't exactly love in-person pics, and she explained why during a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show. The topic came up when the two were discussing Sarah's experiences meeting fans in person. When Howard asked whether fans ever approach her for her autograph but not her husband, Matthew Broderick, Sarah said, "I wish people asked for autographs, Howard. No one asks for autographs anymore. They ask for a selfie." "Oh, don't you hate that?" Howard replied, leading Sarah to agree. "Yeah, so here's what I've been trying to do," she said. "'Cause I was just at the airport on Friday. A woman came up to me and she didn't say hello. She just said, 'Can I take your picture?' and I said, 'We didn't even meet. You didn't even introduce yourself. What's your name?'" "When you tell me your name, I'm gonna tell you no," Sarah confessed, "but we're gonna have a conversation and I guarantee you it's gonna be so much more meaningful." Sarah said it feels impersonal when fans only come up to take her picture — and sometimes it's even "startled" her. "I kind of prefer it to somebody walking up to me with the camera already ready, asking as they're clicking," she shared. "I always am like startled by it, and I tell you, I much prefer to have a conversation, for someone to come up to me and say, 'Maybe this isn't your best time. My name is Veronica and I'm just here and I'm excited to see you.'" Honestly, I get it! What about you? Watch the full clip here, and then let me know your thoughts in the comments.

‘Alert' & ‘The Cleaning Lady' Canceled By Fox
Fox has determined the fate of two bubble shows, canceling dramas Alert: Missing Persons Unit after three seasons and The Cleaning Lady after four. The network had delayed final decisions on its remaining bubble series until after their current seasons had aired. Alert wrapped its Season 3 run on May 27, and The Cleaning Lady's fourth season ended on June 3. More from Deadline 2025 TV Cancellations: Photo Gallery 2025 Premiere Dates For New & Returning Series On Broadcast, Cable & Streaming Ex-'Doctor Odyssey' Crew Members Sue Disney, 20th TV Claiming Sexual Harassment And Wrongful Termination The cancellations do not come as a surprise as Alert, The Cleaning Lady as well as the other two Fox scripted series not picked up for next season, Accused and The Great North, sit at the bottom of the network's 2024-25 season rankings. Animated comedy The Great North also is expected to be canceled once its current fifth season ends later this month. As for anthology Accused, developed and executive produced by Howard Gordon, it might come back in the future for a limited run as an event, Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network, said last month. RELATED: 'We love the show and Howard Gordon,' he said. 'As you know, it's anthological, which means it doesn't have the same timetable on renewals as shows that have locked casts. And so right now, we're talking with Howard if there's an opportunity down the line to eventize a return, something that can really work for us and Howard, we'd love to do it. Right now. there's no plan, but there could be down the line.' All four series are Fox Entertainment co-productions with outside lead studios, Warner Bros. TV (The Cleaning Lady), Sony Pictures TV (Alert, Accused) and 20th Television Animation (The Great North). With Sony TV, Fox also has its breakout new medical drama series Doc, which is coming back in the fall for a 22-episode season; Warner Bros. TV is behind Fox's upcoming thriller drama Memory of a Killer. According to sources, Fox explored continuing Alert, possibly with some retooling, as the network brass liked Scott Caan as a leading man and the show's evolution into a buddy-cop show. Ultimately, the ratings were not there. RELATED: The Cleaning Lady, headlined by Élodie Yung, underwent creative retooling heading into this season after the series faced the tragic loss of its male lead Adan Canto to cancer. The drama never regained its footing but maintained a passionate core fan base that is left with loose ends and unresolved issues in the Season 4 finale. Alert: Missing Persons Unit is set in the Philadelphia Police Department's Missing Persons Unit. Each episode featured a search for a missing person headed by detectives Jason Grant (Caan) and Nikki Batista (Dania Ramirez). Together with the MPU team, their job is to find the missing or abducted and reunite them with their loved ones. Adeola Role, Ryan Broussard and Alisha-Marie Ahamed also starred. Carla Kettner served as showrunner and executive producer, with Jon Cowan, Brandon Sonnier, Brandon Margolis, Sean Hennen, John Eisendrath, Jamie Foxx, Datari Turner and Brad Turner also executive producing. RELATED: The Cleaning Lady, the first Southeast Asian-led broadcast drama, centers on Thony De La Rosa (Yung), a Cambodian-Filipino former surgeon who makes a living as a cleaning service worker alongside her sister-in-law, Fiona (Martha Millan). After witnessing a murder, Thony is offered a job both as a cleaner and a doctor within a criminal organization that could pay well enough to help her son and her family. Kate Del Castillo, Santiago Cabrera, Sean Lew, Faith Bryant, and Khalen Roman Sanchez also starred in the series, based on an Argentine format, which was developed for American television by Miranda Kwok.
