Stage is set for northeast Indian states to rise with Rs 4.3 lakh crore investment proposals

India Gazette25-05-2025
New Delhi [India], May 25 (ANI): The very first edition of 'Rising North East Investors Summit 2025', organised by the central government with an aim to highlight northeastern region as a land of opportunity, drew a whopping Rs 4.3 lakh crore in investment intention, setting the stage for these states to become India's next economic powerhouse.
This is the first investment summit organised on this scale since the inception of the Ministry of the Department of North Eastern Region (MDoNER).
Industry leaders, including Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, Gautam Adani, Chairperson of Adani Group, and Anil Agarwal, Chairman of Vedanta, collectively announced investments worth more than Rs 155,000 crore to explore opportunities in the region during the event's inauguration ceremony, on Friday morning, in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to a statement from MDoNER, Mukesh Ambani pledged Rs 75,000 crore over the next five years, targeting agriculture, telecommunications, digital services, and local enterprise development.
Gautam Adani announced an additional Rs 50,000 crore investment over the next decade, and Anil Agarwal announced more than Rs 30,000 crore investment in the northeast Indian states.
'I reaffirm our promise: every MoU, every proposal discussed here will be pursued relentlessly. The Northeast Region, our NER, now embarks on a journey of New Economic Revolution, a New Economic Revival -- where it will emerge as India's International Gateway to Southeast Asia,' said the Union Minister of DoNER, Jyotiraditya Scindia, in his concluding remarks on Saturday afternoon.
The investment summit hosted ministerial sessions, Business-to-Government sessions, Business-to-Business meetings, startups, and exhibitions of policy and related initiatives taken by state governments and central ministries for investment promotion.
The two-day Summit is the culmination of various pre-summit activities, such as a series of roadshows and states' roundtables, including the Ambassador's Meet and the Bilateral Chambers Meet, organised by the central government with active support from the state governments of the northeastern region. The pre-summit roadshows were held in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Guwahati, and New Delhi, among others.
In the inaugural ceremony of the summit held on Friday, the Prime Minister highlighted that over the past decade, Rs 21,000 crore has been invested in the Northeast's education sector. He noted key developments, including the establishment of over 800 new schools, the region's first AIIMS, nine new medical colleges, and two new IIITs. The Prime Minister assured that the Northeast now offers top-tier talent across various sectors, encouraging industries and investors to leverage the region's immense potential.
The prime minister noted that a whole new sky of possibilities is opening up for the northeastern states. He also cited a few initiatives taken by his government to improve trade linkages with neighbouring countries.
'In the coming decade, the trade potential of the Northeast is set to grow manifold,' PM Modi had said.
Noting that the trade volume between Indian and ASEAN countries is around USD 125 billion, the prime minister said it will surpass USD 200 billion in the next decade, and the Northeast will become a strong bridge for this trade.
Once fully operational, the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway will establish direct connectivity to Thailand through Myanmar. This will ease India's connectivity with countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos.
'Our government is also working swiftly to complete the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Project, which will connect the Kolkata Port to Sittwe Port in Myanmar, and further link the rest of the Northeast via Mizoram. This will significantly reduce the distance between West Bengal and Mizoram and prove to be a major boon for industry and trade,' PM Modi said.
The northeast region's GSDP at current prices is Rs 9.26 lakh crore in 2023-24. GSDP of NER states grew at a CAGR of 10.8 per cent, from 2014-15 to 2021-22 (against the national average of 8.1 per cent). (ANI)

As Shubhanshu Shukla returns home, Parliament plans special discussion on mission on Monday

The Lok Sabha on Monday will hold a special discussion on India's space journey and Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla's historic mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), according to a notice issued by the Lower House. IAF Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla being received by Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta and Union minister Jitendra Singh at IGI airport early on Sunday (HT Photo/Arvind Yadav) The House will debate on 'India's first astronaut aboard the ISS –– critical role of space programme for Viksit Bharat by 2047', a subject that can possibly end the deadlock in Parliament to hail India's new milestone in space journey. Shukla landed in New Delhi in the early hours of Sunday following his two-week long mission aboard the ISS in June-July. The discussion has been scheduled amid the Opposition's efforts to raise the issue of alleged manipulation of voter lists and the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. Opposition leaders have sought a discussion over the SIR issue. However, the government has taken a stand that the House cannot take up a discussion on the matter as the case is sub judice in the Supreme Court and relates to Election Commission of India (ECI), an autonomous body, Protests over the same have led to the transaction of limited business in Parliament. 'But, given the nature of the debate on Shukla's journey to the ISS, there is a scope that the Opposition may join the discussion,' a senior Congress leader said on anonymity. In June, Shukla became the second Indian to go to space –– after IAF wing commander Rakesh Sharma –– as part of the Axiom-4 mission to the ISS. He returned to Earth on July 16. Alongside Shukla, the Ax-4 mission marked the return to human spaceflight programme for India, Poland and Hungary in over four decades. Representing the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), Shukla's return with all the learnings and experience from the Ax-4 mission is an important step for the Gaganyaan mission and setting up the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (the Indian Space Station). In her address to the nation on the eve of the Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu mentioned Shukla's feat and said, 'I am sure that Shubhanshu Shukla's space journey to the International Space Station has fired a whole generation to dream bigger. It will prove extremely helpful for India's upcoming human space flight program, 'Gaganyaan'.' The Department of Space described Shukla's mission as one of 'strategic importance' and India's resolve to emerge as a serious contender in human space exploration. During his address on the 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Shukla's historic visit. 'Every citizen of the country is seeing the wonders of the space sector and is filled with pride. And our Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has returned from the space station. He is also coming to India in a few days. We are also preparing for Aatmanirbhar Bharat Gaganyaan on our own in space. We are working towards building our own space station on our own,' he said.

Nexus with contractors? GDA set to transfer 76 supervisors

Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) is set to transfer 76 supervisors following persistent complaints of collusion with contractors in facilitating illegal construction. Residents also allege that supervisors, working in tandem with private builders, demand hefty sums to overlook unauthorised floors. GDA has around 200 supervisors in the seven zones under it, but its manual does not specify a maximum tenure for postings before an employee can be shifted. Many of the supervisors on the list have been posted in the same zone for more than five years. Officials admitted that supervisors posted in the same zones for years had formed "unholy alliances" with local realtors, and said the reshuffle aimed to curb the spread of illegal colonies, which have risen from 321 in 2021 to 351, occupying around 3,000 acres. Supervisors are also tasked with checking the quality of construction materials and ensuring that all work is carried out in line with the approved plan. However, their nexus with contractors runs deep. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A Teaspoon Before Bed Burns Body Fat - Fit Into Your Clothes Again! Health & Family Click Here Undo A Vaishali resident told TOI, a contractor allegedly sought Rs 40,000 on behalf of a GDA official to allow his family to construct an additional floor in their two-storey flat. "We hired a private contractor, prepared a cost estimate, and even had construction material delivered," he said. But that evening, a GDA supervisor reached their house and warned the family that the work violated regulations. Unsure how to proceed, the family considered abandoning the plan. "But the contractor assured me it could be 'managed' for Rs 40,000. Construction went ahead without further interference. Only later did I realise the nexus between contractors and supervisors," he added. According to a GDA official, despite checks and balances, illegal construction has been unabated in the city. "We deduced that many of the supervisors are working in the same zone for years and have developed a nexus with contractors, allowing illegal construction. This nexus needs to be broken, for which GDA has prepared a list of 76 supervisors who will be transferred to other zones." DDA allocates land at Nehru Place for 5-star hotel for 55-yr period

New Delhi: Delhi Development Authority's first attempt to offer land for a five-star hotel on an annually incremental licence fee fetched Rs 27.2 crore per annum against the reserve fee of Rs 18 crore. The bid, won by one of the biggest hotel chains in the country, will generate revenues of Rs 10,000 crore for DDA over the licence period of 55 years. The initiative will provide a much-needed boost to the hospitality sector while contributing to DDA's coffers. "It was on the directions of lieutenant governor VK Saxena that DDA decided to move away from the existing freehold and perpetual lease models and chose a 'special licence property' mode to offer lands for prominent projects on annual incremental licence fee," an official said. The official explained that the experience of the last two decades showed that the freehold and perpetual lease models were not achieving desired results due to the high cost of land. "In contrast, the special licence property initiative is a key step towards leveraging DDA's land assets for sustainable, high-value development, contributing to Delhi's emergence as a global destination for business, hospitality, and medical treatment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New German Hearing Device Sweeping Canada (And Under $100) Top Trending News Today Learn More Undo It will also ensure that DDA continues to be the owner of the land," the official said. The auction was conducted on Aug 13, in which Fleur Hotels Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Lemon Tree Hotels Limited, emerged as the winning bidder. SBI Capital Markets Ltd assisted DDA as the transaction advisor for the auction process. "The company secured this project for an annual licence fee of Rs 27.19 crore. The yearly licence fee will escalate annually and is expected to generate around Rs 10,000 crore as revenues for DDA over the 55-year licence period," said a DDA official. The hotel to be named Aurika Nehru Place is set to become one of the city's biggest with over 500 rooms. It claimed it would offer elegant rooms, suites, signat-ure dining, expansive banqueting and best-in-class leisure facilities.
