KSE-100 hits all-time high as investors cheer IMF breakthrough

A day after shedding over 800 points, bullish momentum returned to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Tuesday, as the benchmark KSE-100 Index settled at a new all-time high of 120,450. A buying spree was observed throughout the trading session, pushing the KSE-100 Index to an intra-day high of 120,693.83. At close, the benchmark index closed on 120,450.87, an increase of 1,573.07 points or 1.32%. 'Market participants showed positive sentiments today, following Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's statement that talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over the upcoming federal budget had been successful,' Waqas Ghani, Head of Research at JS Global, told Business Recorder. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday that talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over the forthcoming federal budget had been successful, paving the way for a new phase of economic growth. The premier, while talking to a select group of journalists, said the government had stabilised the economy and would now shift its focus toward sustained development. Meanwhile, Samiullah Tariq, Head of Research and Development at Pakistan Kuwait Investment Company (Private) Limited, said that the government's adherence to IMF-backed reforms has 'led to sustainable economic growth'. Moreover, investor confidence also comes on the back of a continued earnings momentum across key sectors and a more stable outlook, he added. On Monday, PSX witnessed a volatile session on the first trading day of the week, as early bullish momentum was wiped out by heavy late-session selling, finally, the benchmark index closed into negative territory. The benchmark KSE-100 index shed 813.29 points or 0.68% to close at 118,878 points. Internationally, Asian shares edged cautiously higher on Tuesday while the dollar fell to a six-week low as erratic US trade policies clouded markets and investors turned defensive ahead of key developments later in the week. US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping will likely speak this week, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Monday, days after Trump accused China of violating an agreement to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions. The call between the two leaders will be closely watched by markets to see if the tariff-induced blow to global stocks and the dollar this year could get some reprieve or ratchet up, as trade tensions between the world's two largest economies simmer. Data on Monday showed US manufacturing contracted for a third straight month in May, and suppliers took the longest time in nearly three years to deliver inputs amid tariffs. The gloomy global trade situation left US futures falling early in the Asian session, failing to sustain the slight gains made during the cash session on Wall Street overnight. Nasdaq futures and S&P 500 futures were both down 0.2% each. In Europe, EUROSTOXX 50 futures advanced 0.28% and FTSE futures added 0.15%. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan reversed early losses to last trade 0.6% higher, while Japan's Nikkei rose 0.66%.

Gulf bourses in green as oil prices rise

Most stock markets in the Gulf were trading higher early on Tuesday as oil prices ticked up on concerns about supply. Dubai's main share index, up 0.40%, was set for a second consecutive session of gains and Abu Dhabi's benchmark index was set to snap two consecutive sessions of losses. A lower than expected supply hike from OPEC+ is boosting oil prices, a catalyst for stock markets in the Gulf. Brent crude futures were up 0.19% to $64.75 a barrel by 0627 GMT. Adding to supply concerns was a wildfire in the province of Alberta in Canada that has led to a temporary shutdown of certain oil and gas production. According to Reuters calculations, the wildfires have disrupted close to 7% of Canada's oil production. Real estate financier Amlak Finance was the top gainer on the Dubai index, up 14.29%. First Abu Dhabi Bank, the United Arab Emirates' biggest lender, was up 1.15% in early trade. Gulf stocks settle varied on tariff uncertainty, rise in oil prices In Qatar, the benchmark stock index was up 0.61%, helped by a 2.15% rise in Qatar Gas Transport and a 1.86% gain in consumer goods conglomerate Industries Qatar. Bucking the trend, Saudi Arabia's benchmark stock index was trading flat in early trade. The 1.30% fall in Tadawul Group was offset by a 2.56% rise in insurance company Buruj Cooperative Insurance. Geopolitical tensions aided the oil price increase, with Iran poised to reject a U.S. proposal to end a decades-old nuclear dispute. Failure of nuclear talks between the countries could result in continued sanctions in Iran, limiting Iranian supply. Markets, however, remain cautious as U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping will probably speak this week, days after Trump accused Beijing of violating an agreement to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions. Nasdaq futures and S&P 500 futures were both down more than 0.3%.

European shares tumble as economic, trade uncertainty muddies growth outlook

European shares dropped on Tuesday, weighed down by economically-sensitive bank and mining stocks as investors awaited updates on the trade war clouding global growth. The pan-European STOXX 600 reversed early gains to fall 0.5% by 0830 GMT, extending Monday's losses, as banks dropped 1.4% and miners slumped 2.3%. The Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation (OECD) and Development trimmed its global growth outlook and said the trade war was taking a bigger toll on the U.S. economy than before. 'The OECD forecasts is going to cause a great deal of concern…. a lot of people were thinking maybe inflation is behind us, but big concern now is about what happens next,' said Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell. The news comes ahead of a flash estimate of euro zone inflation numbers and the European Central Bank's monetary policy meeting this week. Anxiety over how U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs would be implemented after they ran into legal hurdles last week still prevailed after the administration asked an appeals court to pause a second court ruling. European shares pressured by Trump's new tariff threats However, the administration pushed countries for their best trade offers by Wednesday and said that Trump and his Chinese counterpart will likely speak this week amid escalating trade tensions, a sign that trade negotiations were on the horizon. 'Markets feel like they're on the Trump tariff roller coaster at the moment…. The biggest problem is that it always feels like it's one step forward, 2 steps back,' said Hewson. Defensive stocks were in a bright spot with utilities and telecom advancing. Meanwhile, Dutch far right leader Geert Wilders said his PVV party would leave the governing coalition, toppling the rightwing government and likely leading to new elections. Stocks in Netherlands were down 0.6%, largely in-line with declines in regional bourses. Among individual names, British water utility Pennon Group fell 2.1% after it swung to an annual pretax loss. UBS gained 2% after Jefferies upgraded the bank's stock to 'buy' from 'hold'. Julius Baer slipped 1.9%. The Swiss bank announced further cost-saving measures amounting to 130 million Swiss franc ($159.02 million) by 2028. Real estate investment trust Cofinimmo gained 2.9% after announcing a merger with healthcare real estate firm Aedifica.
