Amazon has exercised its option to acquire a direct equity stake in Valu, the consumer finance arm of EFG Holding, following the company's listing on the Egyptian Exchange (EGX).
The global e-commerce giant will now own approximately 3.95 per cent of Valu's share capital, executing the transaction through the EGX's block trade mechanism at a price of EGP 6.041 per share. The stake purchase is set to occur during the first trading session of Valu's shares, after receiving the necessary regulatory approvals.

The agreement stems from a 2022 deal in which Amazon invested $10m in global depositary receipts (GDRs) of EFG Holding. As part of that deal, Amazon secured the right to convert its investment into a 4.255 per cent stake in Valu, contingent on a qualified liquidity event — a milestone now met with Valu's public market debut.
EFG Holding Group CEO Karim Awad hailed Amazon's decision as a strategic endorsement of EFG's capacity to build and scale innovative ventures in the region.
'We are proud to witness Amazon's decision to acquire a direct stake in Valu,' Awad said. 'This milestone underscores our commitment to delivering long-term value and highlights Valu's role in advancing financial inclusion and digital transformation in Egypt.'
Valu CEO Walid Hassouna echoed the sentiment, emphasising the company's customer-centric approach and adaptability in a dynamic financial landscape.
'This milestone is a powerful testament to the resilience of our business model,' Hassouna said.
'We remain committed to empowering individuals and businesses through innovative financial solutions.'
Maged El Ayouti, co-head of Investment Banking at EFG Hermes, credited the firm's advisory role in facilitating the Amazon transaction and guiding Valu's path to the public market.
'From securing Amazon's strategic investment to preparing for Valu's EGX debut, we're proud to support the company's transformative growth,' he said.
Valu's listing on the EGX was formally completed on May 21, 2025, with shares becoming available for trading starting June 23, 2025.
EFG Hermes acted as the sole financial advisor to both EFG Holding and Valu on the transaction.

South Africa's Takealot grows revenue to fend off Amazon rivalry

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's biggest online retail group Takealot grew its full-year revenue by 15%, with growth supported by investments in logistics, enhanced customer offerings and its subscription service as it faces competition from new market entrant Amazon. Technology investor Naspers said on Monday that Takealot Group's revenue rose by 15% in local currency to $872 million for the fiscal year ending March 31. Despite this growth, the group posted an adjusted EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) loss of $13 million. the group's general merchandise e-commerce platform and Amazon's direct competitor, saw its gross merchandise value (GMV) increase by 13%, with revenue climbing 17% and order volumes up by 15%. Takealot also owns on-demand platform Mr D, which offers restaurants, groceries and other shops. "I think their (Takealot) performance in the last year was ahead of our expectations, actually," Prosus and Naspers Group Chief Financial Officer, Nico Marais told Reuters. "We did invest in our marketplace elements to improve the business, and we actually saw Amazon moving, probably not at the speed that we originally expected, which was to our benefit. So we are ready to fight off competition." The battle for online consumer spending intensified throughout 2024, with both global and local players investing heavily to capture market share. Amazon has since expanded its South African service to include non-perishable groceries. The U.S. online retail giant launched in South Africa in May 2024. To defend its leading market share, Takealot said it will strengthen its market presence by enhancing its loyalty programme, TakealotMore, which it hopes will attract and keep existing customers. "The business will also focus on growth through range extension and key categories while improving unit economics through cost optimisation, particularly delivery costs and stock efficiencies," it added. The retailer is also investing in artificial intelligence to gain better understanding of its customers, identify trends, personalise marketing campaigns and automate customer experiences.

Ras Al Khaimah's hotel inventory expected to increase from 8,321 to 15,798 keys by 2030

Ras Al Khaimah's hospitality infrastructure is expected to continue its strong growth path, with hotel room supply projected to reach nearly 16,000 keys by 2030, a report showed. Stirling Hospitality Advisors' RAK Investment Pulse report highlights key areas for development, including laundry, F&B supply, logistics, procurement, and staff housing, which will be essential for sustaining the Emirate's continued tourism growth. According to the report, 7,427 new hotel rooms are confirmed for delivery by 2030, on top of the 8,321 rooms already in operation, with more than 5,000 keys currently under discussion. This expansion reflects Ras Al Khaimah's strong tourism outlook and underscores investor confidence in its long-term development strategy. It also signals the need for targeted investment in hospitality infrastructure to ensure operational systems scale alongside guest-facing assets. Tatiana Veller, Managing Director of Stirling Hospitality Advisors, commented: 'As Ras Al Khaimah's hospitality market enters a new era of growth, it's vital that support infrastructure keeps pace. Operational systems such as laundry, logistics, and staffing are essential to delivering high-quality guest experiences. The report is a timely reminder to investors and stakeholders that strengthening these areas is key to long-term competitiveness, and the opportunity to scale with the market growth is abundant.' The report, now in its fifth edition, finds that many hotels in RAK continue to depend on suppliers located outside the emirate, not atypical for the overall UAE market. Most finished food and beverage items, including bottled water and frozen bakery items, are sourced externally, primarily from Dubai, which adds to transportation costs and logistical inefficiencies. Additionally, 86% of hotels outsource their laundry operations, with many relying on service providers located in neighbouring emirates. Workforce infrastructure remains another area to pay attention to. While more than 60% of casual staff are currently sourced externally, the demand for dedicated staff housing is projected to exceed 16,000 units by 2030. Vocational training facilities are an additional potential facilitator of growth. Hotel operators also reported strong interest in a centralised procurement and logistics hub, with over 85% stating it would improve operational efficiency, reduce emissions, and streamline supply chains. The emirate's business community has been actively at work to localise the supply chain. To support the next phase of exponential growth, the report outlines several priority investment areas, including scalable laundry facilities, cold storage and procurement hubs, and purpose-built staff housing zones. These developments would reduce operational overheads, enhance service quality, and align with the Emirate's broader tourism and sustainability goals. Commenting on the report, Alison Grinnell, CEO of RAK Hospitality Holding, added: 'RAK Investment Pulse fills a crucial need for reliable information and insights. As RAK is building its history and legacy, this newsletter is a way for the world to stay updated on the remarkable growth and development in this dynamic Emirate.'
