The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity: Everything you need to know about the anime
Alright, anime fans, buckle up! 'The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity' (or Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku if you're feeling fancy) is the romantic comedy you didn't know you needed in 2025. This gem, based on Saka Mikami's hit manga, dropped in July and has folks swooning over its sweet story and gorgeous visuals. Whether you're a die-hard romance fan or just dipping your toes into anime, here's the lowdown on Season 1—release dates, plot and everything you need to know. When Can You Watch It?
The show hit Japanese screens on July 5, 2025, at 12:30 AM JST on channels like Tokyo MX and BS11. For those of us outside Japan, Netflix is where it's at. It started streaming in some Asian countries on July 13, 2025, and, as Netflix confirmed, it'll land in the United States and several non-Asian countries on September 7, 2025. Season 1 has 13 episodes—short enough to devour in a weekend but long enough to get you hooked. No English dub yet, so you'll be watching with Japanese audio and subtitles. If you're outside Netflix's reach, sites like AniWatch might have it, but check your region. What's the Story?
Picture two high schools that are total opposites. Chidori High is a boys' school full of rough-around-the-edges types who aren't exactly acing their exams. Right next door is Kikyo Girls' High, where the students are all about class and prestige. These schools don't get along—like, at all. Mixing with the other side is basically a scandal.
Now meet Rintaro Tsumugi, a Chidori guy who looks like he could star in a gangster flick but is actually a sweetheart who bakes at his family's patisserie. One day, Kaoruko Waguri, a bubbly Kikyo girl with a serious cake obsession, walks into the shop and orders enough pastries to feed a soccer team. Their random encounter turns into a friendship, then something more, as they dodge their schools' rivalry and nosy classmates. It's a story about looking past labels, finding your people, and maybe sneaking a few extra desserts along the way. Who's in the Cast?
The voice actors are killing it, bringing these characters to life: Rintaro Tsumugi (voiced by Yoshinori Nakayama): The tough guy with a heart of gold. Nakayama's got credits in Fire Force , so he's perfect for Rintaro's soft side.

(voiced by Hiiro Ishibashi): Another Chidori buddy in the mix. Subaru Hoshina (voiced by Aya Yamane): A Kikyo girl who adds some spice to the group.
The side characters are so well done, you'll be just as invested in them as the main couple. What to Expect in Season 1
The first episode, called 'Rintaro and Kaoruko,' kicks things off with their adorable bakery meet-up. The season's likely to cover the first 40 chapters of the manga, wrapping up around a big summer festival moment that'll have you grinning like a fool. Over 13 episodes, you'll see their romance grow, their schools clash, and the side characters steal the show, all while leaving room for a possible Season 2.

Charlize Theron Has A ‘The Old Guard 3' Update
The Old Guard 2 The Old Guard 2 has arrived as a typical Netflix dichotomy. Awful critic and audience scores, yet still debuting and staying as the #1 movie on the service, above the fantastic KPop Demon Hunters. So, if it's bad, but people are watching, does that mean we're getting The Old Guard 3? It's complicated, and I would argue at this point, not especially promising. Well, I guess it's promising if you don't want another one to happen. This movie was five years in the making, a lengthy gap for a sequel, and as for whether there's going to be another film, we have a few updates from those involved. First, the director, Victoria Mahoney, speaking to The Direct: That's not a huge shock, as Mahoney did not direct the first film (and it's possible that may explain some of the quality drop, as few other factors changed). Given her apparent schedule and this movie's reception, her not coming back is no great surprise. But they need Charlize Theron, star of the show, to continue the cliffhanger ending they set up, leaving things open for more installments. She just spoke to THR about the possibility of making a trilogy out of it: It's not great if this was where they wanted to 'land the film' as it was very bad, and I'm not sure how it was reminiscent of the first one, which was much better. The idea here is that they left it open on purpose for a third movie, but there is apparently not even a concept for that, nor indications from Netflix at this point it's going to happen. It also stands to reason that Theron may want to focus on other projects. She's currently filming what will probably be one of the highest-profile movies of the decade, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, where she will reportedly play Circe in the ensemble cast. Outside of that, she apparently has four other movies in the works: Atomic Blonde 2, another action film, and Two for the Money and Apex. But this is Netflix, and with that comes Netflix money, so who knows? I would bet that this is the last we see of The Old Guard unless the second film manages to put up truly stunning numbers. It's doing well, but that well? I doubt it. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy

Netflix Is Losing Its Best, Overlooked Sci-Fi Movie In A Week, Watch It Fast
Furiosa The frustrating issue with a licensing system is that every month, without fail, Netflix loses a large number of movies and shows as deals expire while they bring in a new crop that may be better or worse on any given day. This month? They've lost some great ones, and they're about to lose some more. Just over a week from now, Netflix is going to lose what I would consider 2024's best sci-fi movie, or at least the best one that was unfortunately very overlooked by audiences. That would be Furiosa, the George Miller prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, that was released last year. It will be booted off Netflix on July 15, unfortunately. You can make the argument that Dune: Part Two may be the better sci-fi movie of that year (and Netflix just lost that on July 1), but it was far, far less ignored than Furiosa. Dune: Part Two made $714 million at the global box office and greenlit a third film from director Denis Villeneuve, who will move on to James Bond for Amazon after. Furiosa? It's a tragedy. The fantastic film only made $174 million worldwide, which matched its $168 million budget almost exactly. So they made $6 million, right? No, because that's just the budget of the film and doesn't include marketing and distribution. Famed director George Miller wants to say in the universe, but that very much was considered a bomb, and it's unclear whether he'd be able to spool up another entry in the franchise. The idea was that it would hopefully earn closer to what Mad Max: Fury Road made, $380 million globally, but it wasn't half that. Furiosa I will definitely not say that Furiosa is as good as Fury Road, which I'd consider one of the best action sci-fi movies ever, but it's still fantastic. Anya Taylor-Joy plays a young version of Charlize Theron's Furiosa from the first movie, and it features Chris Hemsworth as one of the campiest, most fun villains we've seen in cinema in a very long time. Here's the official synopsis: Even if you haven't seen Fury Road (which Netflix unfortunately does not have), I very much think you can still watch Furiosa, which stands on its own two legs (and one arm). Check it out before it's banished from Netflix for the foreseeable future. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram. The Four Proposed Or Potential ‘Squid Game' Spinoffs On Netflix
Squid Game While Squid Game is over on Netflix after the release of season 3, there is a very real possibility that no, it's not over at all. Nothing is official at this point, but there are an increasing number of ideas or proposed ideas or rumors about how Netflix will continue the series from here, something it no doubt wants to do with the first season still holding its all-time viewership record and season 3 breaking other records with its release. By my count, there are at least four different Squid Game spin-offs that could potentially manifest in the coming years, albeit one seems closer than others. We'll start with the most detailed. Squid Game 1) Hwang Dong-hyuk, the original Squid Game creator and master of the current three seasons, went into detail with EW about a potential spin-off he had in mind, which would actually serve as a prequel: "I actually had this faint ideation about possibly a spinoff — not a sequel, but maybe a spinoff about the three-year gap between season 1 and season 2 when Gi-hun [Lee Jung-jae] looks around for the recruiters," Hwang said. "There is that three-year period, and maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park [Oh Dal-su] or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that. So that is some vague ideation that I have that could possibly be developed in the future." That would be a somewhat out-there idea as it would be a Squid Game show without an actual game, presumably, given its timeline. But if Hwang has an idea, Netflix is likely to try to cultivate that. Squid Game 2) This one's short, but in the same interview, while Hwang has expressed exhaustion about working on the series (including a number of stories that involve him losing teeth due to stress), he says that he is 'not trying to say that I'm going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never." Spinoffs or sequels, presumably, could be more than just his above proposal, especially a sequel that would take place after the events of the last game. 3) Squid Game America has been this nebulous concept for a while now, a spinoff of the series, not a remake, with David Fincher's name being attached for several years now. The conversation has been resparked by the finale of Squid Game season 3, which showed Cate Blanchett as an American recruiter, and while Hwang says it wasn't directly meant to lead into an American version, rumors have now started swirling at this Fincher version may be spinning up after all, though nothing official from Netflix. Squid Game 4) The Front Man, played by Lee Byung-hun, recently commented about the idea of a spinoff for his character in an interview with THR: 'Director Hwang and I have been joking about a Front Man spin-off since the beginning. We both thought that the Front Man or the recruiter could be interesting for more story, because we haven't really explored these characters in their entirety yet. Their backstory is still vague, and their character is still a little murky. To look at the Front Man with a full character study would be a very fun thing to do. So, as for your question — of course I'd be willing to star in it. The character has already been built and designed, and I'm very compelled by him. Just as the fans are curious to know more about him, I am too. That's a story I'd be very willing to tell.' The concept of a Front Man story would leave a lot of options open. We now know he was a competitor and winner of a previous game, so there could be a prequel there. There could be a focus on him during Hwang's 'interim' show. And he is one of the few characters who survives the season 3 finale, so he could return for a sequel show or season. Lots of choices, should any manifest. Do you want to see more Squid Game?
