Terrorists sprayed bullets on dozens of tourists in Pahalgam on April 22, killing at least 26, in the deadliest attack in the Valley since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow group of the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the terror attack, prompting India to downgrade its diplomatic ties with Pakistan on all fronts.
PM Modi Vows To Give 'Toughest' Response
PM Modi on Sunday, during the 121st episode of his radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat', reaffirmed his commitment to delivering the 'toughest" punishment to terrorists and their backers, assuring the families of the Pahalgam attack victims that 'justice will be served."
He noted that Kashmir saw massive growth in recent years, with the surge in tourism and opportunities for the youth, and said that the Pahalgam attack was a desperate attempt by the enemies of the nation to derail the region's progress.
'I assure the victims' families that they will get justice. The conspirators and perpetrators of this attack will face the toughest response," PM Modi remarked.
This marked Prime Minister Modi's second address to the nation following the Pahalgam attack as his first came from Bihar, where he pledged that the terrorists and masterminds behind the Pahalgam attack would face a punishment 'beyond their imagination."
'Today, on the soil of Bihar, I say to the whole world, India will identify, trace and punish every terrorist and their backers. We will pursue them to the ends of the Earth. India's spirit will never be broken by terrorism," PM Modi said.
Notably, PM Modi made the remarks in English, with many people speculating that the leader wanted his strong voice against terrorism to be heard all across the globe.
India has already announced a series of punitive measures against Pakistan, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
Additionally, New Delhi ordered the closure of the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari, halted the issuance of visas to Pakistani citizens, and decided to reduce the presence of senior officials at the High Commission.

Watch: PhD Graduate Refuses To Take Degree From Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi

TIRUNELVELI: A PhD graduate from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University refused to receive her degree from Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi during the convocation program. The event, held at the V.O.C. Auditorium on the university campus, saw TN Governor R N Ravi, who is also the university chancellor, conferring degrees on students. Of the 37,376 students from 104 affiliated colleges and the university, 759 were present to receive their degrees directly from the Governor, including 650 PhD recipients. As per the usual practice, degrees were handed to students before they went on stage, where the Governor would then personally present them. However, in a surprise move, one student, identified as Jean Joseph from Kottar, Nagercoil, bypassed the Governor and received her degree from Vice-Chancellor Chadrasekar instead. #WATCH | Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu | PhD student from MDT Hindu College refuses to receive degree from Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi (13.08) (Video Source: Manonmaniam Sundaranar University) — ANI (@ANI) August 14, 2025 Speaking to the media, Jean Joseph explained that she took the decision because she believes the Governor "has done nothing for Tamil Nadu or the Tamil language." She added, "Many others are more qualified to present degrees such as the Chief Minister or the Education Minister. It should be the student's choice from whom to receive the degree. My fellow students appreciated my decision. If it were wrong, no one would have congratulated me. I don't want to take my degree from someone who does not respect our land, language, and identity." Jean Joseph completed her at Hindu College, Nagercoil, pursued MCA at Mepco College, Sivakasi, and recently earned her PhD in Human Resource Management from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. The incident comes against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between Governor Ravi and the ruling DMK and its allies, who have repeatedly criticised him for his controversial remarks. Notably, Jean Joseph's husband, Rajan, is the district student wing secretary of the DMK.

Our responsibility to strengthen harmony that holds country together: PM Modi on partition day

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, which is observed annually on August 14, is a reminder of people's enduring responsibility to strengthen the bonds of harmony that hold the country together. On this day, India remembers the upheaval and pain endured by countless people during that "tragic chapter of our history," Modi said in reference to the unspeakable suffering as millions were forced to leave their homes. Lakhs of people are estimated to have died in communal violence. The PM said on X, "It is also a day to honour their grit... their ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh. Many of those affected went on to rebuild their lives and achieve remarkable milestones."

Ex-Diplomat Vikas Swarup says US relations with Pakistan is ‘short term, motivated by…'

Former diplomat Vikas Swarup explained on Wednesday as to why he believes that the United States' relation with Pakistan is "short-term." The former High Commissioner to Canada and author of Slumdog Millionaire, Swarup said, "We have to look at US' relationship with Pakistan in a different lens from the US' relationship with India." In an interview with news agency ANI, Swarup said he believes that "the relationship with Pakistan right now is a very tactical one and is a short-term one." He added that the US' relationship with Pakistan is 'primarily motivated by the financial gain that the [US President Donald] Trump family and [US' Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve] Witkoff family hope to make from the cryptocurrency assets in Pakistan.' Explaining his view about the US' relation with India, Vikas Swarup said, "With India, I think, the relationship is much more strategic." "It is not so transactional as it is with Pakistan. That is why I personally feel that it is a passing phase," he said. "I call it a storm, not a rupture. You just have to wait out the storms. All storms eventually pass," the ex-diplomat added. Vikas Swarup told ANI that Pakistan is reportedly positioning itself as the "Crypto King" of South Asia, possibly through its association with World Liberty Financial, which has ties to Trump's family and Steve Witkoff's family. "More importantly, I think Pakistan is now trying to position itself as the 'Crypto King' of South Asia and there, through World Liberty Financial, in which Trump's family has stakes, Steve Witkoff's family has a stake, through that I think Pakistan has managed to project an image of itself as a reliable these things have led to Trump having a softer approach towards Pakistan," said the former diplomat. When asked about Trump's 'highest tariff' on imported Indian goods, Vikas Swarup stressed that these tariffs are part of a broader strategy to exert pressure and secure favourable trade terms from India. "But that does not mean that he has given up on India or that India is now an adversary for him. I think this is part of his pressure tactics to secure a more favourable deal. India should not cave in because our strategic autonomy is non-negotiable," Swarup told ANI. In July, US President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods along with an unspecified penalty. Days later, he imposed another 25 per cent tariff, bringing the total to 50 per cent, citing India's purchase of Russian oil. Swarup said that India has not caved in to US pressure. He said, 'India should not cave in because our strategic autonomy is non-negotiable.' Attacking Trump over his huge tariffs, Swarup said, '...If you cave in to a bully then the bully will increase his demands. Then there will be even more demands.' "So, I think we have done the right thing. India is too large, too proud a country to become a camp follower of any other country. Our strategic autonomy has been the bedrock of our foreign policy right from the 1950s. I don't think that any government in Delhi can compromise on that," said former diplomat Vikas Swarup on the tariff rift between India and the US.
