DMK MP Opposition's Favourite For Veep Polls, But Trinamool Has A Problem
The Opposition INDIA bloc is likely to pick the DMK's Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva as its Vice-Presidential candidate, in a strategic move that would pit the senior Tamil Nadu politician against another from his state in the upcoming election and overcome the key hurdle posed by regional politics, said sources. The official nominee will be known only after Opposition parties meet this evening at Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge's house to decide on their candidate.
Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, one of the BJP's tallest leaders in Tamil Nadu, is the NDA's candidate for the September 9 election, the central ruling party had announced last evening.
The untimely Vice-Presidential election follows the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, officially over health concerns, though sources had later pointed out differences with the BJP that ought to have forced the senior Jat leader to an early exit.
Choosing Mr Siva as its candidate could help the Opposition navigate the intricacies of regional politics, the sources indicated, highlighting several factors that may go in favour of the Tamil Nadu politician.
However, it may lead to a fallout with the Trinamool Congress, a key component of the INDIA bloc. Sources within the Mamata Banerjee-led party had earlier suggested that a non-political figure be projected for the Vice-Presidential election, insisting on building a consensus unlike last time. The Trinamool had abstained from voting in the last Vice Presidential election, disagreeing with the Opposition's choice of Congress leader Margaret Alva. Mr Dhankhar had won that election.
The fact that Mr Radhakrishnan is from Tamil Nadu would counter the NDA's South push - and draw support from southern parties, if he eventually becomes the Opposition face. More importantly, this wouldn't leave the DMK in two minds; they wouldn't think twice before supporting one of their own.
The DMK, however, has already asserted that it would support only the INDIA bloc's candidate. TKS Elangovan, spokesperson of the DMK, had called Mr Radhakrishnan's NDA candidature an "election propaganda" and said that fielding a Tamilian was not the same as being "pro-Tamil Nadu".
"Projecting a Tamilian is not pro-Tamil Nadu. Otherwise, the BJP is against Tamil Nadu. They are not giving proper funds. For everything, they are not supporting Tamil Nadu in all terms," he told NDTV in an exclusive interview yesterday, saying that the BJP "does not want Tamil Nadu to prosper".
Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran has described Mr Radhakrishnan's nomination as a moment of pride for the Tamils, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he has distinguished himself with his dedication, humility, and intellect in his political career.
"In his long years in public life, Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji has distinguished himself with his dedication, humility, and intellect. During the various positions he has held, he has always focused on community service and empowering the marginalised," said PM Modi in an online post.
After the BJP's parliamentary board's decision to project Mr Radhakrishnan as its face, party chief JP Nadda had hoped that the opposition parties would support the NDA candidate, though the INDIA bloc had already asserted it would field its own candidate.
The last date for filing nomination for the Vice-Presidential election is August 22.

Karnataka Assembly session: BJP questions benefits of Greater Bengaluru Authority; Bill passed
Opposition BJP members in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday questioned the advantages provided by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to the city and termed the Greater Bengaluru Governance (Amendment) Bill, 2025, 'undemocratic and against the spirit of the decentralisation of powers to urban local bodies'. The intention of the GBA, headed by the Chief Minister, was to control five city corporations and destroy their autonomous powers, claimed Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok. Speaking on the Bill, Mr. Ashok, C.N. Aswanth Narayan, S. Suresh Kumar, Satish Reddy, S. Muniraju, Ravi Subramanya, and C.K. Ramamurthy (all BJP) termed the formation of Greater Bengaluru and the division of the erstwhile single city corporation into five city corporations as 'unconstitutional'. Instead of empowerment, GBA has disempowered the local bodies, they claimed. Who heads corporations Noting that Mayors head city corporations, BJP members questioned the necessity of setting up the GBA headed by the Chief Minister. Mr. Ahsok said the GBA aimed at centralisation of powers in the hands of the Chief Minister and Ministers, and demanded the withdrawal of the Bill. Mr. Subramanya said the division of the city into five corporations led to imbalances in revenue generation and development among civic bodies. For instance, the Dasarahalli constituency areas have come under two city corporations, which led to confusion among the public, he said. The Bill was passed in the House later. Why amendment Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who also holds the Bengaluru Development portfolio, said some people had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the court, which has been rejected. However, an amendment had to be carried out to clarify that 'the GBA will not interfere in the functioning of the corporations', to avoid any confusion in future. The PIL had claimed that the government was planning to take control of the corporations. 'Our intention is that the Mayor and councillors must have full powers in the corporation as per the Constitution,' Mr. Shivakumar said. He noted that Mahadevapura contributes the highest taxes in Bengaluru, and there was not much collection in central areas.

Videos of expunged proceedings should not be shared on social media: Rajya Sabha Chair
Amid continued stalemate between the government and opposition over the demand for a discussion on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, the Chair in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) said that videos of expunged proceedings should not be shared on social media. Soon after the House met post-lunch, and the Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill was tabled, Radha Mohan Das Agrawal of the BJP raised the issue of the Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge sharing videos of his expunged speech on social media. He said while Mr. Kharge raises the issue of SIR, the Chair disallows the same. However, the extracts of his speech are shared on social media, even after the Chair has clearly stated that the same will not go on record of the House. The Upper House, which has witnessed repeated adjournments in the Monsoon Session as Opposition has demanded a debate on the SIR issue calling it a threat to democracy, while the Government has maintained that the "sub-judice" matter can't be discussed, saw the two sides locking horns once again on Tuesday. The House saw the first adjournment soon after meeting at 11 a.m., and was adjourned till 2 p.m. over the SIR issue. When the House met post-lunch, the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2025 was taken up, even as Opposition MPs raised slogans demanding a debate on SIR. "I have been noticing whenever a debate starts, LoP stands, you give permission to speak on Bill, he goes straight to SIR. You give instruction that it will not go on record. But then we see that the video of his speech is shared on social media..." he said. "How can the video be posted on social media when it has been expunged in writing, is it not a breach of privilege?" he said. Mr. Tiwari, who was in the Chair, then said that anything which has been expunged should not be shared on social media. "Arrangements should be made so that anything that is not a part of the House proceedings should not go on social media through Sansad TV, or any other medium..." he said.

And as the saying goes, a Bihari can take on anybody,' the 35-year-old RJD leader said.
