Early warning systems are important because of the limited ability of scientists to predict when an earthquake will occur.
The US Geological Survey recorded an earthquake measuring 7.4 in the same region ten days before.
This may have been a foreshock - an early release of energy - but it is not a predictor of exact timing of a future earthquake, explained Prof McNeill.
"Although we can use how fast the plates are moving, GPS to measure current movements and when previous earthquakes occurred, we can only use this information to make forecasts of probability of an earthquake," she said.
The Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GS RAS) will continue to monitor the region as it anticipates aftershocks could continue for the next month.

The frustrating habit, with its name a contraction of ' phone snubbing ', involves looking down at your mobile phone while your partner is trying to talk to you. Researchers from Anna University in Chennai, India, explained that by concentrating on your phone, you are not maintaining regular eye contact with your partner. This impacts how affectionate people feel towards them and affects levels of physical contact. As part of a study, researchers surveyed 300 people aged 45 or under who had been in committed relationships for up to 15 years. They were asked about their phone use and their partnerships. It found that couples who use their mobiles the most saw a decline in eye contact and sexual activity. 'As a subtle but persistent form of partner neglect, phubbing may contribute to declining reproductive intent by eroding emotional foundations,' the study said. Writing in the peer-reviewed African Journal of Reproductive Health, the researchers added: 'It disrupts human intimacy by reducing face-to-face attention, emotional closeness, and sexual desire. 'Our findings provide strong evidence that phubbing, frequently dismissed as a trivial annoyance, may have deeper evolutionary and relational consequences. 'Those who experienced frequent phubbing were over three times more likely to express hesitation or disinterest in having children with their partner. 'It may seem like a minor social slight, but repeated occurrence can undermine the emotional and physiological mechanisms that sustain romantic bonds and reproductive motivation.' A previous study published in Computers in Human Behaviour in 2016 found that texting during a conversation made the talk less satisfying for the people having it, compared with people who interacted without phones. Meanwhile, in a study published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology in 2018, 'phubbing' was found to threaten four 'fundamental needs' – belongingness, self-esteem, meaningful existence, and control – by making 'phubbed' people feel excluded and ostracised.

Aug 3 (Reuters) - Tsunami waves were possible in three areas of Kamchatka in Russia's Far East, the nation's Ministry for Emergency Services said on Sunday after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the nearby Kuril Islands. "The expected wave heights are low, but you must still move away from the shore," the ministry said on the Telegram messaging app, after the latest seismic activity in the area. The Pacific Tsunami Warning System, which gauged the quake at 7.0, said, however, there was no tsunami warning after the quake. The U.S. Geological Survey also said the earthquake was at a magnitude of 7. Overnight, the Krasheninnikov Volcano in Kamchatka erupted for the first time in 600 years, Russia's RIA state news agency and scientists reported on Sunday. Both incidents could be connected to the huge earthquake that rocked Russia's Far East last week, that triggered tsunami warnings as far away as French Polynesia and Chile, and was followed by an eruption of Klyuchevskoy, the most active volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula. The Kuril Islands stretch from the southern tip of Kamchatka Peninsula. Russian scientists had warned on Wednesday that strong aftershocks were possible in the region in the next several weeks. "This is the first historically confirmed eruption of Krasheninnikov Volcano in 600 years," RIA cited Olga Girina, head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team, as saying. On the Telegram channel of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Girina said that Krasheninnikov's last lava effusion took place within 40 years of 1463 and no eruption has been known since. The Kamchatka branch of Russia's ministry for emergency services said that an ash plume rising up to 6,000 meters (3.7 miles) has been recorded following the volcano's eruption. The volcano itself stands at 1,856 metres. "The ash cloud has drifted eastward, toward the Pacific Ocean. There are no populated areas along its path," the ministry said on Telegram. The eruption of the volcano has been assigned an orange aviation code, indicating a heightened risk to aircraft, the ministry said.

Couples using IVF to have a baby may be more successful during the summer, research suggests. A study involving 1,100 women undergoing fertility treatment suggests a pregnancy may be up to twice as likely when the weather is sunnier and warmer. Even in spring, the pregnancy rate was 75 per cent higher than during the colder months, scientists found. They suggest that higher levels of vitamin D – the so-called 'sunshine vitamin' – may improve hormonal balance and boost fertility naturally. The pregnancy rate particularly soared when the weather outside was a balmy 26 to 30 Celsius, which suggested patients having IVF 'may benefit from treatments conducted in this temperature range', the researchers said. They suggest fertility clinics could use their results to schedule more patients for treatment during the spring and summer – which they say would help boost success rates. 'Our findings suggest that season and temperature play a significant role in influencing the success rates of clinical pregnancies, and suggest that summer treatment may optimise IVF outcomes,' the team wrote in the International Journal of Biometeorology. The study was conducted on patients attending a fertility clinic at the Reproductive Hospital of Guangxi in China between June 2021 and October 2023. All were having IVF for the first time, and using fresh – rather than frozen – embryos. Those having treatment in the spring were 75 per cent more likely to get pregnant, and those in the summer were 53 per cent more likely to be successful. However, among those women having IVF using a process known as the 'long protocol' – which is standard in the UK and involves using drugs to suppress natural hormone production before stimulating the ovaries to produce more eggs – the pregnancy rate was twice as high during the summer months. Similar findings have also been reported in other studies. The researchers, from the hospital, said it was not clear why there appeared to be such a marked difference but suggested vitamin D levels could be a factor. The vitamin is naturally produced in the body in response to sunlight and the NHS recommends everyone in the UK takes a vitamin D supplement during the winter months. A deficiency of vitamin D is linked to a range of chronic conditions such as osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis and heart disease. The researchers said that while the impacts of season and temperature on pregnancy were 'not fully understood', more research was needed to clarify the role of vitamin D on pregnancy outcomes.
