Global developers, Korean suppliers hold 44 business meetings to strengthen offshore wind ties
The Korea Wind Energy Industry Association said Monday it successfully hosted the nation's largest offshore wind power event, solidifying its role as a hub for international collaboration in renewable energy.
The second annual Offshore Wind Supply Chain Conference & Exhibition was held on Wednesday and Thursday at Bexco convention center in Busan.
This year's event brought together 74 offshore wind supply chain companies from around the world, including those from the United Kingdom, Japan, Taiwan and the Netherlands. This was twice the number of companies from last year and attracted 2,250 visitors.
'With the successful completion of both last year's and this year's events, the Offshore Wind Supply Chain Conference & Exhibition has firmly established itself as Korea's leading offshore wind power industry gathering,' said an association official.
During the event, industry leaders and experts discussed a range of topics, including Korea's policy support, changes in wind farm financing under the second Donald Trump administration and strategies to enhance regional collaboration in Asia's offshore wind industry.
According to the association, Korean energy solutions provider Doosan Enerbility signed partnership agreements with 10 companies during the event to jointly strengthen the offshore wind supply chain. Additionally, 44 meetings were held between Korean supply chain businesses and global developers.
FoundOcean of the UK, a world-leading company specializing in securing offshore structures to the seabed, also signed a technology collaboration agreement with K-BETS, a leading Korean offshore structure specialist.
New programs, such as tours to nearby supply chain businesses in Busan, Ulsan and South Gyeongsang Province, also received positive feedback, the association said.
'The KWEIA will keep striving to highlight Korea's supply chain capabilities and help revitalize the domestic wind power market,' the official added.

Who gets Korea's cash handouts? Rules for foreign residents explained

If you're a permanent resident covered by the national health insurance system, check the detailed criteria — you may be eligible for at least 150,000 won Foreign residents living with Korean nationals may be eligible for South Korea's new cash handout program, which aims to revive consumer spending and bolster household income starting July 21. Backed by a supplementary budget of 31.8 trillion won ($23.3 billion), the program offers a one-time payment of at least 150,000 won (about $110) to all Koreans residing in the country as of June 18. "The purpose of the 'consumption coupons' is to stimulate sluggish spending, revitalize the local economy, and support Korean incomes. Therefore, in principle, foreigners are excluded,' Vice Interior Minister Kim Min-jae said at a briefing on Saturday. Still, he noted that some exceptions apply. Foreign nationals may qualify if they are listed on the same household registration as at least one Korean and are enrolled in the national health insurance system, either as a subscriber or dependent, or if they receive medical aid. They may also apply if they are permanent residents with an F-5 visa, marriage migrants with an F-6 visa, or recognized refugees with an F-2-4 visa and are covered by national health insurance or medical aid. Korean citizens who have been staying abroad can also receive the payment if they return to Korea between June 18 and Sept. 12 and verify their entry records. A second rollout of the subsidy program is planned for September, with 90 percent of all Koreans eligible to receive a fixed payment of 100,000 won. Eligibility will be determined based on income and asset levels. For foreign nationals and refugees, the same criteria apply as in the first program. And if you live outside the greater Seoul area or in designated regions facing rapid population decline, you will receive an additional 30,000 or 50,000 won. The coupons can be used at small local businesses with annual revenue under 3 billion won, including traditional markets, neighborhood supermarkets, restaurants, barbershops and beauty salons. They cannot be used at major discount chains, department stores, duty-free shops, or directly operated franchise outlets. Applications and distribution will continue for eight weeks through September 12. Payments will be issued via credit or debit cards, prepaid cards, or local government-issued gift certificates. The money can be used until Nov. 30. Any unused balance after that date will be returned to the government. ssh@

Trump unveils 25% tariffs on goods from South Korea, Japan in letters to leaders

WASHINGTON/BRUSSELS (Reuters) -- President Donald Trump said on Monday the U.S. would impose a 25% tariff on imports from Japan and South Korea beginning Aug. 1 as he unveiled the first two of an expected 12 letters to trading partners outlining the new levies they face. "If for any reason you decide to raise your Tariffs, then, whatever the number you choose to raise them by, will be added onto the 25 percent that we charge," Trump said in letters to the leaders of the two Asian countries, which he posted on his Truth Social platform. Later, Trump also announced the U.S. will impose 25 percent tariffs on Malaysia and Kazakhstan, 30% on South Africa and 40% on Laos and Myanmar. The rate for South Korea is the same as Trump initially announced on April 2, while the rate for Japan is 1 point higher than first announced. A week later, he capped all of the so-called reciprocal tariffs at 10% until July 9 to allow for negotiations. Only two agreements have so far been reached, with Britain and Vietnam. There was no immediate response from the Japanese or South Korean embassies on the announcement. About 12 countries will receive letters from Trump, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said at a briefing without identifying them. She said Trump would sign an executive order on Monday formally delaying the July 9 deadline to August 1. "There will be additional letters in the coming days," Leavitt said, adding that "we are close" on some deals. The European Union will not be receiving a letter setting out higher tariffs, EU sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday. U.S. stocks fell in response, the latest market ruction since Trump unleashed a global trade war on his return to office in January. His moves have repeatedly whipsawed financial markets and sent policymakers scrambling to protect their economies. U.S. stocks were driven to near bear-market territory by his cascade of tariff announcements through the early spring but quickly rebounded to record highs in the weeks after he put the stiffest levies on hold on April 9.

GM Korea's labor dispute intensifies over possible walkout, facility sale tensions amid US tariff woes

An ongoing labor dispute at GM Korea, the South Korean unit of General Motors, has escalated as the union secured the legal right to strike following a breakdown in wage negotiations, sources said Monday, fueling concerns that the American auto giant may scale back its production in South Korea amid the threat of US auto tariffs. According to the sources, the National Labor Relations Commission earlier in the day suspended its mediation of wage negotiations between GM Korea's management and the union, citing deep differences in the positions between the two sides. The suspension legally allows the union to begin collective action, intensifying a standoff already marked by widespread worker opposition to the company's plan to sell GM's South Korean service centers nationwide and unutilized facilities at its plant in Bupyeong in Incheon, west of Seoul. The union has demanded the withdrawal of the asset sale plan as a precondition for the wage negotiations. In a vote carried out last month, 88.2 percent of GM Korea's 6,851 union members voted in favor of a walkout, the highest approval rate for a strike in the union's history. The dispute comes amid mounting anxiety over the possibility that GM could reduce or eliminate its South Korean manufacturing footprint if the United States maintains its 25 percent tariffs on auto imports, part of a policy pledge of US President Donald Trump during his reelection campaign. GM Korea exports approximately 410,000 vehicles annually, with about 85 percent of those shipments headed to the US. On the wage front, the union is demanding a monthly base salary increase of 141,300 won ($103) and a performance-based bonus of 41.36 million won per worker. In contrast, GM Korea's management has defended its restructuring plan, informing employees of its intent to gradually sell the company's service centers and dispose of low-utilization facilities. The company says customer support will continue via its 386 partner service centers in the country and that employees at the affected sites will retain their jobs. A union spokesperson said unless the company withdraws its sale plans, labor will hold internal discussions to raise the intensity of its actions, adding, "We are keeping all options open." (Yonhap)
