Track cyclist Matt Richardson sets world record in the 200-metre flying start
Konya (Turkey), Aug 15 (AP) British track cyclist Matt Richardson set the world record in the 200-meter flying start by becoming the first person to break the 9-second mark.
Richardson, who won three medals for Australia at the Paris Olympics before switching allegiance to Britain, recorded a time of 8.941 seconds at the Konya Velodrome on Thursday.
The 26-year-old Richardson broke Dutchman Harrie Lavreysen's record (9.088) set in Paris last summer.
'I was basically just a passenger. I gave the bike a bit of direction and it was just steering itself almost," Richardson said in a British Cycling press release.
'I know this track can be quite a handful out of the corners so I was cautious in those spots but other than that it was just going as hard as I can." The England-born Richardson won two silver medals last summer — in individual sprint and keirin — as well as a bronze in team sprint.
Also, Will Bjergfelt of Britain set a world record in the C5 UCI Hour Record covering 51.471 kilometers in 60 minutes. He became the first para-cyclist to also break the 50-kilometer barrier. AP SSC SSC

Hunter played on offense and defense, totaling 18 snaps, in Jacksonville's preseason opener against Pittsburgh last Saturday. The Heisman Trophy winner also played both ways during a scrimmage Thursday and crashed hard to the ground while defending a deep pass. Hunter was one of 10 players held out of Jacksonville's practice because of injury, joining right guard Chuma Edoga, right tackle Anton Harrison, defensive lineman Arik Armstead, defensive lineman Maason Smith, offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen, safety Caleb Ransaw, linebacker Jalen McLeod and cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Montaric Brown. It's unclear if any of them will play against the Saints, leaving Coen with a tough decision to make regarding playing starters in the second exhibition. 'There's a chance,' he said. 'We got to go get this injury report and make sure because I don't really want to do too many, 'You're playing, you're not playing,' that kind of deal. "If we are putting (QB Trevor Lawrence out there), we got to make sure we're protected and we have the right guys in front. Same with the runners, things like that. By Lori Ewing HT Image LIVERPOOL, England, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Emotional Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah buried his face in his hands as the Anfield crowd gave a heart-wrenching rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" in tribute to beloved forward Diogo Jota ahead of the Premier League season-opener on Friday. The reigning champions honoured the Portugal forward with a minute's silence before the kick-off against Bournemouth as Jota's death in a car crash alongside his brother Andre Silva last month cast a sombre cloud over the pre-game proceedings. The players stood arm-in-arm with heads bowed, while fans wiped away tears and the words "Rest in peace Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, you'll never walk alone," were displayed around the pitch. Liverpool manager Arne Slot reflected on how the squad had coped following the death of their teammate. "The squad is far better than I expected five or six weeks ago," the Dutchman told Sky Sports before kick-off. "At the moment in time you feel, will it ever be possible to play again or will it ever be possible to get them going again? "But as I said many times they have conducted themselves so, so well in that period of time, when we first heard the news (about Jota's death) and afterwards. "On both sides they were great. As human beings but also they understood that they needed to be professional footballers again so we had to work hard and that is what they started doing." Ten Hag makes successful debut after Bayer Leverkusen wins 4-0 in German Cup
