Combined with the turning of public opinion against Tesla and its controversial CEO, Elon Musk, valuations for the Cybertruck have plummeted in the secondary market, with depreciation reaching remarkable levels.
How bad have things gotten? Here's a look at the current depreciation rate on the Tesla Cybertruck compared with one of its competitors, the Ford F-150.
Depending on the data source, first-year depreciation rates for the Tesla Cybertruck are anywhere between 35% and 45%.
Tesla only recently began accepting trade-ins of its Cybertruck, and it's pricing 2024 Cybertruck AWD Foundation Series models with just 6,200 miles on the odometer for $65,400, NewsBytes reported. That's just about a 35% discount off the original $100,000 list price.
According to CarGurus data, a more realistic depreciation figure for the Cybertruck in its first year is 45%. As this data is based on real-world sales from all types of dealers, not just Tesla, it may be more indicative of the pricing that buyers can get.

According to Edmunds, the first-year depreciation rate for a 2024 Ford F-150 is just over 13%. It takes five full years for the depreciation rate to hit 42%, which is about what the 2024 Tesla Cybertruck experiences in a single year.
By the formula that Edmunds uses, this greatly increases the 'cost to own' of a Cybertruck, particularly vs. a Ford F-150.
If you hold your car forever and never intend to sell it, depreciation may not matter to you as much. It's not a cash expense that comes directly out of your pocket, so in that sense, it's an 'expense' that doesn't cost you anything directly.
But if you ever intend to sell your car, depreciation can be a huge problem. Imagine buying a $100,000 vehicle and knowing that you can only get $65,000 or even $55,000 out of it if you need to sell it after one year. That's a terrible burden.
On the other side of the coin, if you're a buyer, depreciation can work to your advantage. If you really want a Cybertruck, for example, picking one up with fewer than 10,000 miles for 55% to 65% of its original cost can be a great savings.
The data clearly indicates that the Tesla Cybertruck is a flop. Musk initially forecasted an annual sales rate of 250,000 units for the Cybertruck, but since its introduction in November 2023, it has sold fewer than 50,000.
Meanwhile, first-year depreciation rates are running in the 35% to 45% range, well above the 20% that's typical for a truck in its first year after purchase.
The massive depreciation rates for the vehicle indicate that there is little support or demand in the secondary market for the Cybertruck, even at what are bargain-basement prices compared to brand-new models.
The numbers may give potential new Cybertruck buyers pause, as many of them would likely be underwater on their car loan within a year of purchase if current depreciation rates continue.

President Donald Trump's tax bill led to a big stock boost for two Tesla rivals. American electric vehicle makers Rivian and Lucid rose as much as 4.6% and 8.8%, respectively, on Thursday. The gains came after an analyst note from BNP Paribas said that the two companies stand to benefit from Trump's tax bill ending EV tax credits. On Thursday, the House passed the final version of the bill, which would extend the president's 2017 tax cuts and make key changes to the tax system. The bill would also end the $7,500 EV tax credit awarded to buyers on September 30. The tax credit removal is expected to lower demand for EVs, and bigger automakers could be hit harder. Like Tesla, Rivian has been struggling with cars don't qualify for the tax credit, but the company has relied on a leasing loophole for customers to use it. Rivian does not qualify because a requirement mandates that a significant portion of the car battery's materials should be sourced from the US or its trade partners. Lucid vehicles qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. Tesla and Lucid are down 22% and 28.5% so far this year. Rivian's stock is down 2% in the same time period. Big hit to Tesla The loss of the EV tax credit could be a big hit to Tesla, analysts say. Last month, Seth Goldstein, an equity strategist at Morningstar, told Business Insider that the expedited elimination of the EV tax credit would be "the biggest area that could impact Tesla." "Consumers have increased long-range EV choices at similar price points as Tesla," Goldstein said. "It's on Tesla to make the case for consumers to even slightly pay up today versus some other EVs." Goldstein added that tax credit elimination could decrease sales volume, which the automaker has been struggling with. JPMorgan analyst Ryan Brinkman wrote in a note last month that Trump's bill, combined with other proposed legislation, including ending the California Air Resources Board Program, threatened more than half of Tesla's 2025 profits. Brinkman said that the $7,500 consumer tax made up 19% of Tesla's 2024 earnings before interest and tax.

Four years of civil war between Myanmar's military and its myriad opponents have shattered communications networks. In response, people have resorted to methods ranging from the old-fashioned to the ingenious to the hyper-modern. "I don't want to be cut off from the world," Hnin Sandar Soe, 20, said at an internet cafe in eastern Karenni state where she reads headlines, studies online and reaches out to friends and family. "It always brings a warm and comforting feeling to keep in touch with them." - Payphone lifeline - Myanmar has been under military rule for most of its post-independence history, but a decade-long democratic thaw starting in 2010 was accompanied by an astronomical growth in connectivity. That year, SIM cards cost $1,000 and fewer than five percent of the population owned a mobile phone, according to World Bank figures. Seven years later, that figure was 82 percent, as citizens seized on the rapidly developing cellular networks and novelty of free speech. But since the military toppled the civilian government and ignited the war, there has been a slide back into digital darkness. The junta has banned a slew of apps, conflict has eviscerated infrastructure and blackouts are weaponised by all sides. The business earns him a relative fortune of up to $23 a day as customers clamour to dial out. "They don't want to stop speaking with their children elsewhere.
