Troy Deeney has major doubts about Arsenal summer signing Viktor Gyokeres and believes he could even lose his place in the team. Arsenal fans have high hopes for Gyokeres following his £64m move from Portuguese champions Sporting. Gyokeres enjoyed two sensational seasons at Sporting, scoring 97 goals in 102 appearances, and will hope for more success at the Emirates Stadium. Mikel Arteta has been desperate for a new striker for well over a year and decided to sign Gyokeres over the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Ollie Watkins. Havertz led the line for Arsenal for much of last season before suffering an injury. Back fit, the former Chelsea star scored in the final pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao along with Gyokeres. 'I am not convinced Viktor Gyokeres will score as many goals for Arsenal as people think,' Deeney wrote in a column for The Sun. 'My frustration is always that these guys are instantly put on a pedestal. People don't realise the difference between playing in Portugal and playing for Arsenal or Manchester United or Liverpool. 'Gyokeres' numbers are fantastic. You can never deny the goals he scored in Portugal – it's up there with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi levels. 'But he had a lot of chances because Sporting dominated the ball. And then when Ruben Amorim left for Man United last November, he wasn't as prolific. 'In Arsenal's pre-season games, he missed a few chances and there is the feeling that the shirt is a bit heavier to wear than at Sporting. 'Gyokeres will score goals and is a really good player. He will grab a couple of hat-tricks against the lesser teams like Leeds or Wolves. But in the big moments, does he score at Anfield? I'm not sure. 'And the fact that they took so long to get Gyokeres over the line, the fact they also flirted with Benjamin Sesko, that has set off alarm bells for me. I reckon Kai Havertz will play a lot of football this season. Mikel Arteta loves him – he's his type of player to lead the line. Is that Gyokeres? I'm not sure. 'And if Havertz goes on a run then Gyokeres doesn't get back in. I could see that scenario.' Gyokeres looks set to make his competitive Arsenal debut on Sunday when the Gunners face Manchester United at Old Trafford. United also worked hard to bring in a new goalscorer this summer, signing Slovenia international Sesko from RB Leipzig. More Trending Deeney says Sesko 'fits the bill' for a Manchester United side desperately looking to improve after a 15th-place finish last season. 'I really like Sesko's move to United, and I wouldn't bet against him starting at Old Trafford against Arsenal, even if it is just for an hour,' Deeney added. 'He has come from the Red Bull model of wild counter-pressing and intensity. That may not have suited Arteta's structure but with what United are trying to be, he fits the bill.' Ruben Amorim warns Viktor Gyokeres ahead of Arsenal vs Man Utd clash
Ruben Amorim has warned new Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres he will face a very different challenge in the Premier League. Sunday's Premier League blockbuster at Old Trafford between the Gunners and Manchester United pits Amorim against a player he helped take to new heights. There had been talk of a reunion with Amorim at the Theatre of Dreams but the Sweden international instead joined Arsenal and could make his debut against his former boss on Sunday. 'It's a different league,' Amorim said of Gyokeres. 'The physicality is different. 'It is going be different if we face in the beginning of the game Viktor or (Kai) Havertz, for example, so we need to be prepared for that but it's not a surprise to watch Viktor in a big club in England.' A sense of optimism has returned just three months on from their worst top-flight campaign in 51 years being compounded by a damaging defeat in the Europa League final. Amorim has refreshed the squad, both in terms of personnel and mindset, since the end of a campaign in which the United head coach admitted he went into games knowing that they would struggle. But being backed in the transfer window over incomings and outgoings has helped changed that heading into a box office clash. 'It is hard to know (what we will deliver) because we cannot change everything in four weeks, but we are better,' Amorim said. 'I know that we are training harder, we are training better, so I know that we are more prepared to cope with the demands of the game. 'We have new players that we need to understand in the real game what they are capable to do in the moment. But I am really more confident. That is clear. I am more confident in this moment. 'But, again, we cannot change everything in four weeks but step by step we are going to be a better team, but of course I am more confident.' Benjamin Sesko is pushing to make his debut just a week on from joining the club from RB Leipzig, as are fellow summer acquisitions Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon. But there remains work to be done, with a number of players to shift out and a decision to be made on midfield after Brighton made clear they do not want to sell Carlos Baleba this summer. More Trending United are a work in progress but Amorim believes they are far better heading into the new campaign than the side that stumbled home 15th last term. 'We want to return to Europe, but it is hard as a Manchester United coach to say one thing like that,' he said. 'But we need to be realistic with our fans. We are going to have to fight a lot because there's a lot of good teams with more time than us together, but we are going to fight for it. 'We are going to improve. We want to focus game by game. If we are thinking now about how we are going to finish the season it is a problem. Let's focus on game by game. We want to win against Arsenal, that is the main focus.' Martin Odegaard has hit back at Arsenal legend Tony Adams and defended his style of captaincy. The Norway international was handed the armband three years ago and has led a young team that was emerging as top four contenders to the brink of Premier League glory. Having finished as runners-up three seasons on the trot, Adams believes a change of captaincy could be the decisive factor in helping his old club get over the line. Adams, who skippered four title-winning teams under George Graham and Arsene Wenger,has championed the cause of Declan Rice and fears Arsenal will never land the prizes they crave with Odegaard wearing the armband. On the eve of the new campaign, Odegaard was asked about his leadership style and revealed details of what he believes makes him such an effective leader. He told Sky Sports: 'It's a lot to be fair. It's a lot of small things. It's hard to describe it, it's more like a constant role you do. 'There's always these small things you have to do. In general it's just how I see it is to get the best out of the team and how to give the team the right mindset. Help the players around you, get the best mindset in everyone. 'I think before the game just on the pitch I do a little one (team talk) and inside the dressing room we have different people talking. 'It's not just me there's a lot of people sharing the responsibility and the manager does a lot as well. It's a shared thing. It's not just me all the time.' Adams' view, meanwhile, clearly holds little water with Arteta who launched a passionate defence of Odegaard ahead of Sunday's blockbuster against Manchester United at Old Trafford. 'Martin has got hundreds of qualities and everybody who has come across him will notice them very quickly,' he said.
