Suhakam questions arrest of Egyptian student over peaceful pro-Gaza protest in KL
Suhakam said it does not condone vandalism, but any non-violent and conscientious expression of opinion should be addressed proportionately and in line with human rights principles.
'Nonetheless, Suhakam remains concerned that the arrest took place in the first place, given that the act in question was peaceful and falls within the scope of protected expression,' it said in a media statement.
The commission said it had received confirmation from the Home Ministry and police that the student, Marwan Mohamed Magdi Osman Ahmed, has been released from custody and that no deportation has taken place.
It added that this outcome was a positive development and in line with Malaysia's obligations under international human rights law, including the principle of non-refoulement.
'Malaysia must ensure that its legal processes and enforcement mechanisms are not influenced by external pressures in ways that compromise these rights,' it added.
Marwan was arrested on Tuesday after police said he wrote protest slogans on the walls of the Egyptian embassy calling for the Rafah crossing into Gaza to be opened.
Local news portal Free Malaysia Today previously reported the embassy filed a police report accusing Marwan of 'grand treason', prompting an investigation for mischief.
Turkish NGO Justice for Human Rights had earlier urged Malaysia to stop deportation proceedings, citing Egypt's poor human rights record and repeated violations against peaceful demonstrators.

MACC: Five senior military officers accused of leaking intel to RM5m-a-month smuggling ring, among 10 remanded
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 14 — The Magistrate's Court today issued remand orders against 10 individuals, including five senior Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) officers, to assist the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) investigation into a smuggling syndicate operating in the country's south. The MACC said the others remanded comprise two journalists from an online media agency, a company manager, an administrative assistant at the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) and a foreign woman. 'Four male suspects have been remanded for seven days until Aug 20, two men and one woman for two days until Aug 18, while two men and one Indonesian woman are remanded for three days until Aug 15,' it said in a statement today. The remand orders were issued by Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin. According to sources, the five senior military officers and five civilians, aged between 30 and 55, were arrested around the Klang Valley yesterday in 'Op Sohor', carried out by MACC's Intelligence Division with the cooperation of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). The military intelligence officers are suspected of colluding with the syndicate by leaking operational information to help them evade enforcement. The smuggled goods allegedly brought into the country include drugs, cigarettes and other items from neighbouring countries, with an estimated value of about RM5 million a month. The raids followed about 12 months of intelligence gathering, and the suspects are believed to have received between RM30,000 and RM50,000 in bribes for each smuggling trip conducted. The network involving the officers is believed to be large and complex. In the Wednesday operation, MACC also seized over RM63,000 in cash, several packages suspected to contain drugs, weighing and measuring equipment, liquor and imitation firearms found at the raided premises. Meanwhile, MACC Intelligence Division Senior Director Datuk Saiful Ezral Arifin said the suspects are being investigated for corruption and money laundering offences. — Bernama

Chinese national arrested after allegedly assaulting KLIA immigration officer in scuffle over missing entry records
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 14 — A Chinese national was arrested after allegedly acting aggressively and injuring an Immigration counter officer during a departure inspection at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 yesterday. In the 7.40 pm incident, the woman, who was with a man and two children, approached the counter for immigration departure inspection when the officer on duty found that they had no records of entry into Malaysia, and referred the matter to the supervisor for further checks. The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said the suspect was dissatisfied when told to let other passengers through while the checks were being done, before hurling abuse at the officer, pulling her headscarf and pushing her head towards a pillar in front of the counter. 'A brief scuffle ensued, and the suspect refused to calm down even when instructed. AKPS enforcement officers then called in the Aviation Security (AVSEC) team to diffuse the situation,' the AKPS said in a statement today. Following the incident, the officer sustained swelling around her left eye, a headache on the right side of her head and body aches and was referred to Cyberjaya Hospital. A police report was made, and the suspect is under police custody for investigation under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their public functions, Section 332 for injuring a public servant and Section 353 for using criminal force to deter a public servant from performing their duty. — Bernama

MACC: Seven, including civil servant, arrested in Melaka over RM139,000 false catering claims
MELAKA, Aug 14 — Seven individuals comprising a civil servant and six contractors were remanded for five days starting today to assist in investigations into allegations of submitting false claims totalling RM139,000 last year. The remand order until Monday against the suspects, aged 32 to 52, was issued by Magistrate N. Sivashangari after receiving an application from the Melaka Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). According to a source, all the suspects were detained between 11.24 am and 12.05 pm yesterday when they appeared to give statements at the Melaka MACC office. 'They are being investigated for the offence of submitting supply work documents involving six different companies to obtain claims for the supply of food and beverage services totalling RM139,100 when the supply was never carried out,' said the source. The case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009 which, if convicted, carries a fine not less than five times the value of the false items or RM10,000, whichever is higher, and imprisonment not exceeding 20 years. Meanwhile, Melaka MACC director Adi Supian Shafie when contacted confirmed the arrest and remand. — Bernama
