Unity greatest strength of Sabah, says Hajiji
KOTA KINABALU (Aug 1): The unity among Sabah's diverse races and religions is the cornerstone of the state's strength and prosperity, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor.
He called on all citizens to continue nurturing the harmony that Sabah enjoys today, describing it as the most valuable legacy for future generations.
'Unity in diversity is Sabah's true strength. It is not a weakness, but a uniqueness we should be proud of and work hard to protect,' he said when officiating the launch of National Day, Sabah Day and the 2025 Flag Waving Campaign at the Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort on Friday.
Hajiji reminded all Sabahans that every individual has a role to play in fostering understanding whether in schools, workplaces, business premises, places of worship, or even digital platforms rather than promoting division.
Touching on development progress, he highlighted the positive achievements under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 1.0 Roadmap, which as of May 2025, recorded an encouraging 94 percent implementation rate across 467 planned initiatives.
'Key sectors that continue to receive focus include agriculture, industry and tourism, along with human capital development, people's welfare, infrastructure enhancement, and environmental sustainability,' he said.
The Chief Minister also noted various forms of assistance introduced for the people, including improved access to education and the launch of the Sabah People's Protection Insurance Scheme, which provides comprehensive benefits for citizens.
He called on the public to fly the Jalur Gemilang proudly across the state as a symbol of patriotism and national pride.
'Today's launch is more than a symbolic event. It is a reminder of the deeper meaning of independence, not just freedom from colonisation, but also from poverty and disunity,' Hajiji said.
He added that the annual National Day and Sabah Day celebrations every August are important reminders of the sacrifices made by forefathers in defending the homeland and upholding the nation's dignity.
'As Malaysians in Sabah, we have a great responsibility to preserve the blessings of independence and continue this legacy of struggle,' he said.
The event concluded with the handing over of flags to state and federal government departments and agencies, representatives of various associations, and the launch of the Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Expedition.

Youth council, leaders slam Warisan's 'unrealistic' student Loan write-off pledge
Published on: Tuesday, August 05, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 05, 2025 By: FMT Text Size: Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal PETALING JAYA: Warisan's promise to cancel all outstanding student loans for Sabahans if it wins the state election has been dismissed as unrealistic by the Sabah Youth Council and several political leaders. Council president Abqaree Fawwaz Abekan said the move would impose huge financial burdens and affect other sectors, suggesting instead a 50pc subsidy for needy borrowers. Kunak assemblywoman Norazlinah Arif and Apas' Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan accused Warisan of making grand, populist promises to gain power, noting that no such debts were forgiven during Shafie Apdal's tenure as chief minister. Shafie made the pledge, along with free education, at an event in Sabah on Saturday. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warisan to settle PTPTN debts if possible
Published on: Tuesday, August 05, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 05, 2025 By: Abbey Junior Text Size: Warisan president Shafie Apdal congratulating high-scoring secondary school students at an event in his constituency of Semporna, Sabah, today. (Facebook pic) SEMPORNA: Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said a future Warisan-led state government will assist Sabahans in settling their National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans if Yayasan Sabah has sufficient financial resources. He said although PTPTN is a federal agency, the state could do what Sarawak has done by helping its students repay their outstanding loans. Shafie, who is also MP for Semporna and Assemblyman for Senallang, reiterated that this was in line with his earlier pledge in 2018 to restructure Yayasan Sabah to serve its original purpose of empowering Sabahans through education. He also said loan assistance would include civil servants, both active and retired, who are still servicing Yayasan Sabah education loans. 'The foundation must have the money – not other people who use it to buy over our elected representatives,' he said, without elaborating. In 2021, the Sarawak government, through Yayasan Sarawak, signed an MoU with PTPTN to help Sarawak borrowers repay their student loans. Under this scheme, those who had settled at least 30pc of their PTPTN loans were eligible for a 30pc repayment incentive on the remaining balance. Advertisement As of 2023, the initiative had disbursed over RM90 million and benefited more than 25,000 Sarawakian borrowers, with continued allocations in the state budgets for 2024 and 2025. Shafie stressed that education would remain central to Warisan's approach, alongside long-term economic reforms and industrial development. He also took aim at ongoing basic infrastructure problems in Sabah, such as the water crisis at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), calling it a 'human problem' that should not be politicised or used to penalise students. 'This is about basic needs — clean water to drink, bathe and live. When students protest, they are investigated. That's not how we solve problems,' he said. Shafie said that if Warisan is returned to power, the state would focus on building a knowledge-based society, investing in youth, and creating jobs through entrepreneurship and strategic resource development. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM12 billion from agriculture sector: Hajiji
Published on: Tuesday, August 05, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 05, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji said as a State blessed with fertile land and a tropical climate well-suited for agriculture, Sabah is taking bold steps to support the national food security agenda. Kota Kinabalu: The State Government remains committed to ensuring the agriculture sector continues to be a key driver of growth and a catalyst for a more dynamic and resilient Sabah economy. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor said the sector is not only the third-largest contributor to the state's economy but also plays a critical role in safeguarding national food security. 'This sector contributes RM12.2 billion or 14.5 per cent to Sabah's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). 'Therefore, the State Government is prioritising efforts to further strengthen this sector through more strategic and inclusive approaches,' he said at the closing of the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Sunday. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the closing of HPPNK 2025. Also present were Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, along with federal and state leaders. Advertisement Hajiji said as a State blessed with fertile land and a tropical climate well-suited for agriculture, Sabah is taking bold steps to support the national food security agenda. Among the concrete measures is the re-establishment of the Sabah Rice and Padi Board last year — after being dissolved in 1981 — to boost the local rice industry and raise the Self-Sufficiency Level (SSL) of rice to 30 per cent by 2026 and 60 per cent by 2030. 'This is in line with the priorities of the Federal Government led by Anwar who has placed strong emphasis on agriculture, especially rice cultivation,' he said. He emphasised the importance of modern technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart farming to increase production efficiency, boost productivity, and attract younger generations to the sector. He said Sabah currently has 15 Permanent Food Production Parks (TKPM) that had produced over 1,494 metric tons of food products, generating more than RM4.32 million to date. Hajiji also announced Sabah's first high-impact strategic investment in the Blue Economy sector — development of a European Union-standard tuna and deep-sea seafood landing port in Kota Kinabalu by the State Government in partnership with a local company, with an investment value reaching RM360 million. He said the port is expected to land 50,000 tons of tuna annually, with the potential to generate up to RM1.8 billion in economic value per year, positioning Sabah as one of the major deep-sea players. He also urged the farming, livestock, and fishing communities in Sabah to embrace change and adopt new technologies in modern farming practices and farm management. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
