Luis Diaz seals €70m switch to Bayern Munich from Liverpool

The National2 days ago
Colombian attacker Luis Diaz has completed a €70 million move from Premier League champions Liverpool to Bundesliga title holders Bayern Munich.
Diaz, 28, was given permission to miss Liverpool's pre-season defeat against AC Milan in Hong Kong to finalise the switch and has now signed a four-year contract.
Bayern say the deal is worth €70 million up front plus a further €5m in potential add-ons having seen an earlier offer of €67.5m rejected.
Diaz has been pushing for the move and, after two failed attempts to agree an extension to the two years he had remaining on his contract, Liverpool reluctantly accepted his departure was inevitable.
The winger joined Liverpool from Porto in January for an initial €40m, going on to play 148 games for the club, scoring 41 goals and providing the assists for a further 23.
Diaz would help the Reds win the FA Cup and two League Cups before securing the Premier League title last season, scoring 17 goals in all competitions.
'I'm very happy, it means a lot to me to be part of FC Bayern – it's one of the biggest clubs in the world,' said Diaz, who will wear the number 14 shirt at the club managed by former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany.
'I want to help my new team with my style of football and my personality. My goal is to win every possible title – we will work towards that every day as a team.'
In a message posted on Instagram, Diaz said he would 'treasure forever' his time at Liverpool. 'I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together,' he wrote.
'I have met incredible people, fabulous colleagues, coaches who helped me a lot, and extraordinary fans. Liverpool is, indeed, a special team, and I will keep everyone in my heart. The cycle ends here, and it is so gratifying to look back and realise how happy we were.'
Diaz also paid tribute to former teammate Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car accident during the summer.' It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn't lost one of ours in such a tragic way,' he added.
'As I said, and I repeat, I carry everyone with me in my heart, but one of them in particular: Diogo. I will never forget him. We will never forget him. Thank you for everything. YNWA.'
Bayern Munich board member Max Eberl, speaking to the club website, said: 'Luis 'Díaz is an internationally experienced player with tremendous quality, great skills, and great reliability. He will help our team immediately.
'We are delighted to have been able to bring him to FC Bayern. Transfers like this work when everything meshes together. Our fans can look forward to an exceptional player.'
Bayern suffered a major blow at the recent Fifa Club World Cup when attacker Jamal Musiala suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle after a collision with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The 22-year-old underwent surgery on his injuries with Bayern saying he would be missing for a 'long period'.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have already bolstered their attacking options this summer having signed France Under-21 international Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for a fee that could eventually rise to €95m.
Arne Slot's side have also been heavily linked with Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak who is exploring his options for a potential summer move away from Tyneside.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe revealed on Tuesday that the club had yet to receive an offer for Isak who has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances for the Magpies, including 27 in all competitions last season.
The 25-year-old did not travel on the club's pre-season tour of Asia, with Newcastle initially blaming a 'minor thigh problem' for his absence.
Isak still has three years left on his current deal after moving from Real Sociedad in 2022 in a club-record switch worth around £60m.
Reports suggest it would take an offer of around £150m to have any chance of a deal which means there are only a handful of clubs in the running – Liverpool being one, while Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal have also been mentioned, although it is unlikely Isak would be keen for a move to the kingdom.
'He is still our player. He's contracted to us,' Howe insisted at a news conference in Seoul on Tuesday. 'We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us.
'My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control. We have not received a formal offer for Alex, from any club.'

Diogo Dalot hopes Portugal and Liverpool hero Diogo Jota is 'remembered forever'

Manchester United's Diogo Dalot has spoken about his former teammates Diogo Jota, the Liverpool and Portugal international who tragically lost his life in a car crash recently along his brother Andre. According to reports, Jota was driving with his brother Andre, also a professional footballer, when it veered off the road near the town of Zamora, north-western Spain, and burst into flames early last month. 'It's tough to talk about it, but it was a tough week for me, for every teammate that played with him,' said Dalot during the club's ongoing US pre-season tour. 'I cannot imagine what the family went through. I had the opportunity to see them and it's just tough. I don't think there are any words to describe it when such a tragedy happens like that. 'It hits you. I felt that everybody, the whole world felt it, even if they didn't know him personally. It's just a tragedy. I think every time, at least me, I go on the pitch, I try to … Even today I saw shirts with his name and I think he will be remembered forever. 'I think he deserves it because he was a great man, a great teammate. Someone that I would say was a role model for me because I always like to see a player's behaviour when you play, when you don't play. He was always the guy that was thinking and putting the team first. So I will always remember him like that and hopefully he's at peace now and resting where he is.' Dalot and his United colleagues Bruno Fernandes and coach Ruben Amorim went to Anfield to pay their respects. 'He could have played for any team,' said Dalot. 'When you're talking about the personal side, I don't look to the shirts that he represents. Obviously I played a lot of years with him in the national team and I spent some time with him in there and I think you create connection, you create some memories and I think that's what I want to keep, the good memories. I think it's how I want to remember it.'

Giacomo Bonaventura on playing with Andrea Pirlo, Al Shabab and hopes of moving to UAE

At 35, Italy midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura may be in the twilight of his career. But if there is one thing the former AC Milan, Fiorentina and Atalanta man has consistently demonstrated in recent years, it is that age is just a number. In 2023, Bonaventura made history when he became the oldest player to score their first goal for the Italian national team, in a Euro 2024 qualifier against Malta. The strike came just a few months after he had netted for Fiorentina in their Europa Conference League final defeat to West Ham. It was this type of contribution that convinced Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab to sign Bonaventura last summer. For the Italian, the decision to swap Florence for Riyadh was a significant one – ending his 17-year stint in his homeland – the final decade of which was spent in Serie A. 'I think the first months it was not easy to adapt but now I'm adapted,' Bonaventura reflects in an exclusive interview with The National. 'I mean football is the same everywhere. The environment can be different but we play the same 11 against 11, and the pitch is always green. 'I have enjoyed it a lot because I saw the passion of the people and the players, and all the people that work in football in Saudi, they want to improve. They want to create stronger teams, stronger leagues and I think you can feel this energy." Bonaventura helped Shabab finish sixth in the Pro League and reach the semi-finals of the King's Cup. But after big changes at the Riyadh club, namely the departure of sporting director Domenico Teti and coach Vitor Pereira to Wolves in the middle of last season, Bonaventura is now on the lookout for a new club. While he enjoyed his time in Saudi Arabia, the experienced midfielder says he is an admirer of the UAE Pro League and would love the chance to stay in the Gulf. 'I played all my career in Italy and I wanted to see something else,' says Bonaventura, who revealed that he turned down moves to both Chelsea and Atletico Madrid while he was at AC Milan. 'I was very curious about Saudi Arabia and all this progress that football is making in the Gulf. Not only in there but also in the UAE. 'I spoke a lot with my teammates in Saudi and some of them also played in the UAE and they told me some great great things about the cities, the football and the passion of the people. I would like to play there of course.' Many of Bonaventura's career highlights have come since turning 30 – with his maiden international goal for the Azzurri firmly among them. 'It's not easy to be selected in the national team when you are in your 30s because in Italy there are some great young players,' Bonaventura explains. 'It was a great emotion for me to score that goal and in general to play for the national team is amazing. 'The blue shirt has been worn by the best players in history so every time you play with the national team it is a very big emotion.' The midfielder has appeared alongside many of those names, with Gianluigi Buffon and Andrea Pirlo both in the starting XI when Bonaventura made his Italy debut against San Marino in 2013. 'I played with him [Pirlo] a few matches in the national team and I loved him, the way he saw the game, and I loved his style of play. I have played with many great players – also [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, Buffon. 'As an opponent, one who I loved a lot in Europe and was there in Saudi Arabia was [N'Golo] Kante … I think he is one of the best in the world.' If he does make it in the UAE, Bonaventura will get a chance to reunite with Pirlo who was named as the new manager of UAE second-tier side United FC. As well as playing with several Azzurri legends, Bonaventura has also been coached by a couple in Gennaro Gattuso and Filippo Inzaghi at AC Milan. 'Of course it's amazing when you have an idol and then he becomes your coach; it's an amazing feeling. I always tried to understand and to take their mentality and to learn from them. It was a very nice experience to work with them.' But of the 22 coaches he has played under, the midfielder picks out former Atalanta boss Stefano Colantuono as the most influential of his career. 'Colantuono made me a strong player, not only technically but also physically and tactically,' Bonaventura says. 'He had a great impact on me but it's difficult to say one because I had so many and all of them I learned something from.' Bonaventura is now keen to follow his own path into coaching, although he still believes he has plenty to give on the pitch too, particularly as a player in the Gulf with significant European experience. 'At Shabab, I tried to be a good example for my teammates because I have been playing for so many years and I know how to deal with some situations,' Bonaventura says. 'It's good to be a leader for the younger guys but I'm still also fit and not only an example for behaviour or for leadership but also I'm still challenging physically with them. I can still compete with them and I still have great motivation.'
