Where it starts to break down is supplier development once a business is ready to scale.
That is where you expect corporates to bring these small businesses into their actual supply chain. The result?
You have given someone tools to operate, but no customers. And no customers means no cash flow.
Even when businesses do break into procurement platforms like SCNet, CSD, or internal enterprise systems like Absa's, they are often met with a new roadblock: liquidity.
A purchase order from a big buyer like Coca-Cola might sound like a dream, but how do you buy R1.5 million in raw materials without working capital?
That is where non-traditional finance providers are supposed to step in.
But many, including some well-known fintechs, are charging exorbitant rates that cripple small suppliers before they can scale.
We have seen loan offers with interest so high, the business is still paying back debt long after the order's been fulfilled. Acting on opportunity
So, we built something different.
Our product, USKO, is designed to close this gap by entering into a short-term partnership with the business.
We do not charge interest. Instead, we take a fair percentage of the margin once the deal is done. No paperwork shuffling or hidden fees. It is automated, transparent, and designed to build (not bleed) a business.
This model has been particularly important for women. In South Africa, more than 42% of households are female-headed.
And when women earn, they reinvest up to 90% of their income back into their families and communities, compared to the 30 to 40% for men.
These are the women renting back rooms and running tuck shops, selling chilli sauce, sewing uniforms, or trading fresh produce to major retailers.
Some are making R30,000 a week or more.
But most are invisible to formal supply chains because they are not tax compliant, do not have a BEE certificate, or do not know they need one.
Others do not bank their money, which keeps them locked out of traceable financial systems.
Getting into the system
Compliance among informal and micro-businesses in South Africa remains critically low due to lack of awareness, complexity, and administrative burden.
Of course, this does not mean that we must kill the magic of the informal economy. Instead, we need to formalise it just enough so that these women can trade, grow, and build wealth.
And frankly, corporates and DFIs need to step up.
Some are doing good work in this space, but there is still too much red tape and not enough risk appetite.
We continue to treat a startup looking for basic working capital the same way we treat a listed company applying for growth finance. It does not make sense.
South Africa's small business pipeline is leaking. The gap between EMEs, QSEs, and corporates is massive, and women are falling through.
On the JSE, the Top 40 shares account for roughly 80% of total market capitalisation, despite there being around 400 listed companies.
That should scare us.
An open system
Women are good at business but are risk-averse.
That is not the problem.
The problem remains with rigid systems.
Women need products that are fair, platforms that are open, and a financial ecosystem that grows with us.
Because the truth is, the next big business is not necessarily sitting in Sandton. She is in a back room in Diepsloot, running on grit and potential, just waiting for the system to see her.

‘Military veterans' born in the 90s banked R3.5 million in business support
The Gauteng provincial government had a 3% budgeted target for military veteran support programmes in the 2024-25 financial year. Funds earmarked for businesses owned by military veterans have been given to companies headed by directors who had not yet started school when the new South Africa was born. A budget allocation meant for military veterans exists within the Gauteng government, but the opposition has called the past two financial years' payments 'questionable'. The Department of Sport, Art, Culture and Recreation (SACR) recently confirmed its expenditure on military veteran support programmes via a written response to questions posed in the provincial legislature. Eligibility questioned SACR MEC Matome Chiloane signed off on a response that listed the payments made to companies owned by military veterans for services to the government, including the ID numbers of the relevant directors. The Democratic Alliance noted the definition of military veteran listed in the Military Veterans Act is someone who served in a military organisation during apartheid or in the army before 27 April 1994. 'This excludes individuals born after this period or who were still children during the years of military service eligibility,' stated the DA. The Gauteng government gave R8.5 million to companies owned by military veterans in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 financial years, but at least R3.5 million of that went to directors born in or later than 1990. One payment of R147 700 was made to a company for language services whose director was born in 1995, while R45 000 was spent on a transformation programme provided by a company whose owner was born in 1992. The department gave R966 000 to a company for tablets, R405 000 to another for eventing services, and R486 000 to a third for a sports competition, with these owners being born in 1990, 1991 and 1996, respectively. Five other payments of a combined R1.5 million were made to directors born between 1990 and 1995 for logistics and capacity building, among others. Socio-economic support Finance MEC Lebogang Maile's budget speech reaffirmed the provincial government's commitment to assisting selected groups with business funding. 'We will continue to support provincial socio-economic transformation initiatives by monitoring the 60% spend on Gauteng township-based suppliers; particularly SMMEs owned by Africans, women, people with disabilities, the youth and military veterans,' stated Maile in July. Chiloane's response clarified the payments were not for contracts, but part of a larger support programme. 'The department supports these companies through requests for quotations in line with the annual performance plans indicators, that is, percentage spent on military [being] 3%,' stated Chiloane's response. Targeted spend on military veterans was 3% in the last financial year, up from 1% in the 2023-24 financial year. 'The department further notes the improvement in the 2024-25 financial year on the military veteran support,' concluded Chiloane. 'Far too young' DA Shadow SACR MEC Kingsol Chabalala accused the department of neglecting job creation initiatives, stating some beneficiaries were 'far too young to be categorised as military veterans'. Chabalala said the DA will urge Chiloane to investigate the payments 'transparently and without bias', to ensure the funds reach their intended targets. 'This reeks of a blatant abuse of procurement processes to secure lucrative contracts. 'It stands as a glaring example of how people in this department will stop at nothing, even exploiting the legacy of veterans, to divert public resources for personal enrichment,' Chabalala concluded. Carletonville Hospital empowers local SMMEs through outreach programme
Local entrepreneurs received a major boost on August 1 when Carletonville Hospital hosted an outreach programme aimed at empowering Small, Micro, and Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) in the region. The initiative, led by hospital CEO Josias Naidoo, reflects his commitment to community upliftment through collaboration with key stakeholders. 'The goal is not just talk but real action that helps local businesses grow,' Naidoo said. Hospital spokesperson Matabo Letsoalo explained that the outreach aimed to provide SMMEs with practical tools and knowledge for business success. 'Representatives from the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and Gauteng Treasury gave insights that even inspired dormant dreamers like me,' he joked. Topics covered: Compliance, finance and growth The event focused on helping small businesses understand crucial topics such as: SARS tax compliance Accessing business finance Enterprise development Opening business accounts Registering with CIDB and the Central Supplier Database (CSD) CIDB registration officer Palesa Thaele highlighted the opportunities within the construction industry, describing it as a sector that has created many millionaires. 'CIDB promotes ethics, inclusivity, and measurable economic impact,' she said. Pcard System: Fast payments for compliant suppliers Attendees were also introduced to the Pcard system, a Gauteng Treasury initiative that streamlines supplier selection and ensures payment within a week of service delivery. Pcard Administrator Fortunate Kunene, along with Millicent Motsumi and Phumzile Mqweba, outlined supplier requirements. To qualify, applicants must: Be South African Have B-BBEE Level 1 or 2 Be a black youth, woman, person with a disability, township resident, or military veteran Have valid CSD and SAP Vendor numbers Interested businesses should email: 📧 [email protected] Call for unity among local SMMEs Sibusiso Nhlapo, Chairperson of the Merafong Business Chamber 2, encouraged businesses to collaborate rather than compete. 'We don't want monopolies. We want 10 new companies to get business and uplift our city's economy. Learn the rules so you can benefit.' Lastly, David Lebotse, Supply Chain Manager at Carletonville Hospital, guided attendees through the hospital's procurement procedures, urging local suppliers to become compliant and ready to deliver.
