Identified as Manish Chugh, the man allegedly killed his grandmother in a fit of rage when she scolded him for playing games on his mobile phone.
Police said Manish was playing an online game called 'Aviator' for the past year and lost nearly Rs 2 lakh in the process. "In order to repay the mounting debt, he took loans from relatives and borrowed through mobile apps. On July 24, after losing another Rs 15,000, he returned home angry and distressed.
His grandmother, Draupadi Devi, reprimanded him again. In a fit of rage, he strangled her with a towel," said a police officer.
To cover up the crime, Manish reportedly ransacked the house to make it appear as a robbery. "He stole Rs 18,000 in cash along with gold ornaments, including earrings and other jewellery, and then locked the house from outside before heading to work," the officer said.
Later, he filed a complaint at Purani Abadi police station, claiming unknown robbers entered the house and murdered his grandmother. SP Amrita Duhan said that police began an investigation with support from the FSL and dog squad teams. Based on technical clues and local informants, police grew suspicious of Manish and took him into custody. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to killing his grandmother and stealing from the house to repay his debts.

Nine of family among 11 killed as SUV falls into canal in UP's Gonda
Eleven people, including nine members of a family, died and four others were injured when an SUV plunged into the Saryu canal in this district on Sunday, police said. The accident took place near Belwa Bahuta when the victims were going from Sihagaon village to offer prayers at the Prithvinath Temple in Khargupur, said Krishn Gopal Rai, Station House Officer (SHO) of Itiyathok police station. Rai said the vehicle was carrying 15 people, including the driver. With the help of villagers and rescue teams, 11 bodies were recovered from the submerged vehicle, police said. Superintendent of Police Vineet Jaiswal said those killed in the accident included six women, two men and three children. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish at the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the PM's National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50,000, he said. "Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to an accident in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the mishap. May the injured recover soon," Modi said on X. Sihagaon resident Prahlad's family members and neighbours were going to the temple, police said, adding that among the dead were nine members of his family. The deceased were identified as Prahlad's wife Bina (44), two daughters Kajal (22) and Mehak alias Rinki (14), Prahlad's brother Ramkaran (36) and his (Ramkaran's) wife Anasuya (34), daughter Saumya (9), son Shubh (7), Prahlad's youngest brother Ram Roop's wife Durgesh Nandini (35) and son Amit (14). Apart from this, Prahlad's neighbour Ram Lalan Verma's wife Sanju (26) and his sister Gudiya alias Anju (20) also died in the incident. Prahlad's son Satyam, another daughter Pinky, neighbour Ram Lalan Verma and driver Sitaraman were injured, and are undergoing treatment at the local community health centre. Prahlad is the manager of Meva Lal Madhyamik Vidyalaya in his village, police said. A teenaged girl, who survived the accident, said, "We were visiting the Prithvinath Temple. At the time of the incident, most of us were singing bhajans." Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath condoled the loss of lives in the accident and announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased. As soon as news of the accident reached Sihagaon, the entire village went into shock and grief. Rahul Verma, a resident of Itiyathok and an eyewitness to the accident, said the road was slippery due to rain in the morning. When the driver of the SUV applied the brakes, it slipped and fell into the canal, he said. "We immediately called the police and villagers to the spot and pulled out the SUV with the help of a rope," he said.

Prajwal Revanna assigned prisoner number after life sentence in rape case
Prisoner number 15528, Prajwal Revanna, appeared visibly stressed and wept spending the first night in the jail after being sentenced to life in a rape case on Saturday, authorities have said. A day after being sentenced in the rape case, the suspended JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna was assigned the prisoner number at Bengaluru's Parappana Agrahara Central prison, jail authorities said on Sunday. Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister and JDS supremo H D Deve Gowda, spent his first night in jail following Saturday's court verdict that found him guilty and awarded life term in the case. He was reportedly in tears and appeared visibly distressed. Prison doctors assessed his health late on Saturday night to ensure his medical condition was stable. "He broke down during the medical check-up and expressed his anguish to the staff," a senior official said. Prajwal has reportedly informed the staff that he has approached the High Court challenging the conviction. The former MP is currently lodged in a high-security cell and is being provided enhanced security. According to prison officials, the standard dress code for convicts is being followed, and he will be required to wear the uniform given to prisoners. He was allotted the Prisoner number 15528 on Sunday morning, they added. Prajwal was on Saturday sentenced to prison term for the remainder of his life, while the court slapped an overall fine of Rs 11.50 lakh on him, directing that Rs 11.25 lakh be paid to the victim, a domestic help of the family of the accused. A court here had convicted Prajwal Revanna (34) in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases against him. The Special Court for MPs/MLAs Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat pronounced the verdict on Saturday, after convicting Prajwal a day earlier. The case pertains to a 48-year-old woman who was working as a domestic help at the family's Gannikada farmhouse in Hassan district's Holenarasipura. She was allegedly raped twice -- at Hassan farm house and Bengaluru residence-- in 2021 and the act recorded by the accused on his mobile phone. Prajwal was booked under sections 376(2)(k) (being in a position of control or dominance over a woman, commits rape on such woman), 376 (2)(n) (repeated rape on the same woman), 354A (sexual harassment), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 354C (voyeurism), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 201 (disappearance of evidence) of the IPC, and Section 66E (violation of privacy) of the IT Act, by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which probed the case. The court sentenced Prajwal Revanna to imprisonment for life and imposed Rs 5 lakh as fine, under section 376(2)(k), and imprisonment for life which shall mean remainder of natural life along with Rs 5 lakh fine under section 376(2)(n). He has been also sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for three years and Rs 25,000 fine under section 354A, rigorous imprisonment for 7 years and Rs 50,000 fine under section 354B, rigorous imprisonment for 3 years and Rs 25,000 fine under section 354C. A two year RI has also been given to Prajwal, with a fine of Rs 10,000 under section 506, imprisonment of 3 yrs and fine of Rs 25,000 under section 201, and imprisonment of 3 yrs and fine of Rs 25,000 under section 66 E of IT Act.

Delhi murder mystery solved: Woman, her lover held for killing husband; third accused still absconding
Delhi Police has arrested a woman and her boyfriend for allegedly plotting and executing the murder of her husband and dumping his body in a drain in Haryana's Sonipat, an official said on Saturday. The arrested accused have been identified as Soniya (34), a resident of Alipur in Delhi, and her 28-year-old boyfriend Rohit, who hails from Sonipat, the official said, adding that another accused in the case, Vijay, is absconding. The murder was committed over the affair, as well as the victim's abusive and criminal behaviour, he added. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Harsh Indora said, 'The victim, Pritam Prakash (42), was a known history-sheeter in Alipur. He had more than 10 cases registered against him, including those under the Arms Act, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. He had also been declared a proclaimed offender by the court.' On July 5, 2024, Pritam came to pick up Soniya from her sister's house in Sonipat's Gannaur but left after an argument. That day, Soniya offered Rs 50,000 to her sister's brother-in-law Vijay and asked him to kill her husband. Later, when Pritam returned and pleaded with her, Soniya let him stay in the house. However, that night while she slept on the terrace, Vijay killed Pritam and dumped his body in a drain near Agwanpur. Vijay sent her a video of the body on social media, which was later deleted. On July 20, Soniya lodged a missing complaint with Alipur Police, claiming that her husband had gone out and never returned. While the case was initially treated as a routine missing person report, it raised suspicion when there were no financial or digital footprints of the victim for several weeks. During the investigation, the team traced the mobile number linked to Pritam, which had become active again after nearly a year. Surveillance revealed that the phone was being used in Sonipat, leading the team to Rohit. On being questioned, Rohit initially misled the investigators but later broke down and confessed to the crime, police said. Rohit told police that he was in a relationship with Soniya and that the two had conspired to kill Pritam, DCP Indora said. He admitted that Soniya allegedly paid Vijay to eliminate her husband. Around the same time, Haryana Police recovered an unidentified male body from the area, but were unable to identify it. The case remained unsolved until Delhi Police connected the dots nearly a year later. Police said Soniya later sold Pritam's auto rickshaw for Rs 4.5 lakh and gave his mobile phone to Rohit. DNA samples preserved during the Haryana post-mortem will now be used to conclusively identify the body. Soniya was about 15 years old when she fell in love with Pritam and got married against their families wishes. 'The marriage was never reported to the police by the families, who later accepted the couple. They have three children from the wedlock, including a 16-year-old boy and two daughters,' the DCP said. He said Rohit was previously involved in four criminal cases related to murder and arms possession. Rohit, who got married in April 2025 and used to work as a private cab driver, continued his extramarital affair with Soniya. Police are searching for Vijay, who is currently absconding, the DCP Indora said.
