Actor Michelle Trachtenberg died of diabetes complications, medical examiner says
Actor Michelle Trachtenberg, star of 'Harriet the Spy' and 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' died of complications from diabetes, according to the New York City medical examiner.
The medical examiner's office had ruled her death as undetermined after Trachtenberg, 39, was found 'unconscious and unresponsive' on Feb. 26 in her Manhattan luxury apartment tower. But officials updated her cause of death Wednesday after reviewing laboratory results, the Associated Press reported.
Trachtenberg started her acting career on the 1990s Nickelodeon series 'The Adventures of Pete and Pete' and then parlayed that into the starring role in the 1996 feature film 'Harriet the Spy,' where she played the eponymous investigator. She later appeared in more than 60 episodes of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' in which she played the title character's sister, Dawn Summers. She was also in 'Gossip Girl,' where she played the antagonist Georgina Sparks.
In 2021, Trachtenberg accused 'Buffy' creator Joss Whedon of being physically abusive on set, alleging that the director was not allowed to be alone with Trachtenberg during production. Whedon denied those allegations.
In the months before Trachtenberg's death, her fans expressed concern after she posted photos on Instagram that showed her looking frail. Some fans asked in the comments of those photos if she had lost weight or received plastic surgery.
On the day she died, ABC News, citing unnamed police sources, reported that Trachtenberg's mother had found her daughter before the 911 call was placed, and that the actress may have been suffering complications from a recent liver transplant surgery.

Accused CEO killer Luigi Mangione celebrated his 27th birthday at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center by drafting a list of the '27 Things I'm Grateful For' as he awaits trial in his federal death penalty case. The list was later sent out via electronic communication and obtained by TMZ this week. It begins with an expression of gratitude for his family and friends 'for being there when I needed it most.' Mangione goes on to thank his admirers, who send him as many as 115 letters per day, according to ABC News. He says he also appreciates the prison workers who have dealt with the thousands of letters he's received from more than 40 countries since his arrest in December. He subsequent cites his 'world-class' legal team, his cellmate 'J' (who tolerates his clutter), his appreciation for Chicken Thursdays and Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ Sauce, and everyone who has contributed to his commissary account and defense fund — the latter of which has raised more than $1,000,000. Mangione celebrated his birthday on May 6 while awaiting trial for the execution of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was gunned down by a masked man in Midtown Manhattan on the morning of Dec. 4. Popular rock band's stolen custom guitar has been found, mandolin still missing
Police in New Jersey have recovered one of 'two irreplaceable instruments' that were stolen from rock band Heart. A custom purple sparkle baritone Telecaster guitar, made for guitarist Nancy Wilson, was returned after a woman bought it from the theft suspect, the Associated Press reported. Surveillance video caught the suspect giving the guitar to a woman who put it in her car before parking a few blocks away from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, where it had been stolen on the eve of their May 31. Police identified the vehicle by using automated license plate readers, the AP reported. Officers then tracked its location and contacted the owner, who voluntarily surrendered the instrument. The person she allegedly bought the guitar from has been charged with burglary and theft, the AP reported. Heart's other stolen instrument, a vintage 1966 Gibson EM-50 mandolin played by Paul Moak for more than 25 years, is still missing. 'These instruments are more than just tools of our trade — they're extensions of our musical souls,' Wilson previously said in a statement shared to Instagram. 'The baritone Tele was made uniquely for me, and Paul's mandolin has been with him for decades,' she said. 'We're heartbroken, and we're asking for their safe return — no questions asked.
