Five Reasons Why India Lost To England In The Third Test At Lord's

NDTV14-07-2025
Ravindra Jadeja raised India's hopes at Lord's in the third Test on Monday after the team went eight down. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj gave him brave support but England had the last laugh. Ben Stokes ' men trumped India after five days of gripping and absorbing Test cricket. England were put on course for a memorable win on Day 5 when Stokes and Archer picked three wickets, including of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, in the first hour, before Woakes took out Nitish Kumar Reddy at the stroke of lunch.
Then Jadeja launched a gritty fight back. But, England survived the onslaught to seal a stunning 22-run win over India at Lord's and take a 2-1 lead in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series.
Here are five reasond where the match was lost by India:
1. Approach towards chasing 193
India had to chase 193 in the final innings, on the final day, but they came out with a defensive approach. Their shot selection had the English bowlers dominate. Archer and Stokes picked up three wickets each in the second innings. While Jadeja gave India a push for a win at the other end, and KL Rahul displayed intent by scoring 39, none of the other batters survived against the relentlessness of the English pace battery.
2. Pant Rahul mix up
Vice Captain Rishabh Pant has had a great series. He scored 74 in the first innings. But a moment of madness saw him involved in a totally unnecessary run out. KL Rahul had admitted that momentum had shifted at that moment when Pant was gone, India 248/4.
3. India's top order & Nightwatchman fail to impress
India's opener and No.3 failed to give India a good start. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 13 and 0, while Karun Nair got starts but failed to convert them into big scores. Nair is yet to impress in the series. India's strategy of sending Akash Deep as the nightwatchman backfired.
4. Jamie Smith 's drop in 1st innings
When Jamie Smith was dropped by KL Rahul in the first innings, Md Siraj was stunned. The English wicket-keeper added 51 runs from 56 balls as England went from 265/5 to 355/7

"India Cricket Is In Safe Hands": Shubman Gill Receives Big Praise After Record Ton

Former Indian wicketkeeper and batter Dinesh Karthik praised India's Test captain Shubman Gill after his fourth hundred in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. Gill carved his name alongside legends as he smashed his fourth century of the series--a superbly composed 103 on the final day of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford on Sunday. While India still trailed by 88 runs at the time of his dismissal, Gill had already created history. In terms of overall World Test Championship (WTC) numbers, Gill's record continues to grow stronger. He now has nine centuries in the WTC era, equalling former Indian skipper Rohit Sharma's tally--although Gill has done it in just 67 innings compared to Rohit's 69. "This young boy from Punjab, setting it alight in England. There were questions about him as a batter, and he's put that to bed. He's been outstanding. He's taken to leadership like a duck to water. India cricket is in safe hands," Karthik said on air, as quoted from Sky Sports. As the series stands, Gill has already amassed an unbeaten 722 runs, surpassing Yashasvi Jaiswal's 712 against England at home just last year. Only Sunil Gavaskar has scored more in a single Test series for India -- his 774 runs in the 1971 away tour of the West Indies and 732 at home in 1978/79. With the fifth Test still to come, Gill has every chance of surpassing both of Gavaskar's legendary marks. Coming to the match, Gill's exceptional innings of 103 keeps his side in the game as his side posted 223 runs with the loss of four wickets at the end of the first session on Day 5 against England. At the stroke of lunch, the visitors are 223/4, with Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja unbeaten at the crease. The Shubman Gill-led side still trails the Three Lions' total of 669 by 88 runs. Team India started the first session of the fifth and final day of the fourth Test from 174/2 with Gill (78*) and opener KL Rahul (87*) unbeaten at the crease.

Irfan, Kaif Hail Gill For Record-Breaking Hundred: 'Proper Captain's Knock...'

Last Updated: Shubman Gill scored his fourth century of the series in the final Test at Old Trafford, joining Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar as the only captains to achieve this feat. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan and ex-cricketer Mohammed Kaif praised Indian Test captain Shubman Gill, who continued his impressive form with the bat, scoring his fourth century of the series on the final day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. Gill's 103 was more than just another hundred; it was a statement. This was his fourth century of the series, placing him among the greats. Irfan Pathan posted on X, 'Proper captain's knock from Shubman Gill. Despite all the criticism, he has come on his own on this English tour." Gill, who took over Test captaincy at the beginning of the England series, has silenced his critics with his performance and leadership. Mohammed Kaif, too, joined in the praise, writing in a post on X, 'Growing in stature Shubman Gill, knows the Art of run making." What Records Did Shubman Gill Break? With this century, Gill has joined Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar as the only captains in Test history to score four centuries in a single series. Bradman achieved this in the 1947-48 home series against India, while Gavaskar did so in the 1978-79 home series against the West Indies. However, Gill accomplished this milestone on away soil and in his debut Test series as captain. No other player has ever scored four centuries in their first Test series as captain. The previous best was three, shared by five greats: Warwick Armstrong, Don Bradman, Greg Chappell, Virat Kohli, and Steven Smith. Gill, still just 25, has surpassed this record and etched his name in history with a performance matching the game's finest. This Manchester century also holds personal and national significance. Gill's 103 is the first century by an Indian at Old Trafford in 35 years, since a young Sachin Tendulkar's iconic 119 in 1990. In terms of overall World Test Championship (WTC) numbers, Gill's record continues to strengthen. He now has nine centuries in the WTC era, equalling Rohit Sharma's tally, although Gill has done it in just 67 innings compared to Rohit's 69. As the series stands, Gill has already scored an unbeaten 722 runs, surpassing Yashasvi Jaiswal's 712 against England at home just last year. Only Sunil Gavaskar has scored more in a single Test series for India, with his 774 runs in the 1971 away tour of the West Indies and 732 at home in 1978-79. With the fifth Test still to come, Gill has every chance of surpassing both of Gavaskar's legendary marks. Indeed, this tour has marked a defining phase in Gill's career. From being questioned over his consistency in the longest format to now joining the likes of Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar in scoring four centuries in a single Test series as captain, the rise has been remarkable. The knock at Manchester wasn't flashy, but it was authoritative with confident strokes, patience against the moving ball, and an understanding of the match situation. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Rishabh Pant arrives in crutches at Old Trafford; will India batter join the fight as visitors push to save 4th Test?

Rishabh Pant's chances of batting in the second innings of the fourth Test on the fifth day looked bleak as the Indian vice-captain arrived in crutches on Sunday at Old Trafford. Pant, who took a hit while batting on the opening day of the Test match, has fractured his toe and wasn't in a situation to even stand. Despite the unbearable pain, Pant came out to bat on the second day, after having strong pain killers and scored a fifty. Dhruv Jurel has been keeping wickets for India in the Test match. While it was unclear whether Pant would bat or not, he might nit have to come out padded up unless India suffer a miraculous collapse. In a picture shared on social media by his Indian Premier League (IPL) Lucknow Super Giants, Pant was seen walking in crutches with his training kit on. After having conceded a first-inning lead of 311 runs, India started their second innings on a disastrous note losing both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan departing with no runs on board. Captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul revived the Indian ship with a 188-run stand for the third wicket before the latter missed century by 10 runs. Gill too perished after completing his hundred. Since then its all about all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, who have forged an unbeaten century-run stand to fight against England. If assumptions are to be believed In case the ongoing partnership is broken, Shardul Thakur will come out to bat before the pacers - Anshul Kamboj , Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj - come in, before Pant might arrive. Notably, all are capable of surviving the English bowling attack in the middle.
