Largest crackdown launched on illegal immigrants in Gujarat
Gandhinagar: In one of the largest crackdown on illegal immigration in Gujarat, police have arrested more than 1,000 Bangladeshi nationals across the state in a single day.
Acting under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the leadership of Minister of State for Home Affairs Harsh Sanghavi, Ahmedabad Police detained 890 individuals, while Surat Police arrested 134.
The operation is being described as Gujarat Police's biggest-ever action against illegal foreign residents.
Following the arrests, Minister Sanghavi chaired a high-level video conference from the Surat Police Commissioner's office, connecting with district police chiefs, range officers, and senior intelligence officials.
During the meeting, he instructed officers to intensify operations against illegal residents, thoroughly investigate their activities, and take strict action wherever necessary.
Simultaneously, State Police Chief Vikas Sahay, addressing the media from Ahmedabad, outlined the seriousness of the crackdown and shared operational details.
Sahay revealed that many of the detained Bangladeshis had allegedly entered Gujarat and other parts of India using forged documents created by criminal networks operating out of Bengal.
Investigations into these networks are ongoing, with authorities determined to dismantle the ecosystem enabling such illegal migration.
All detained individuals will be deported to Bangladesh following the completion of necessary legal procedures, Sahay confirmed.
Alarmingly, officials disclosed that several among the arrested individuals were previously involved in serious crimes such as drug trafficking and human smuggling.
In a significant development, two of the arrested Bangladeshis are suspected to be linked to Al-Qaeda sleeper cells.
These individuals are currently under detailed questioning at the Joint Interrogation Centre in Ahmedabad as authorities probe deeper into potential terror links.
Minister Sanghavi has issued a stern warning to all illegal Bangladeshi nationals still in hiding, urging them to voluntarily surrender at the nearest police station within two days.
He emphasised that failure to do so would result in aggressive house-to-house searches, arrests, and immediate deportations.
The state government has made it clear that strict legal action will be taken against individuals or groups found sheltering illegal residents.

Arunachal steps up crackdown on illegal B'deshi immigrants
Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh govt has launched a statewide crackdown to detect and deport illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, an official said on Thursday. Acting on directives issued by the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA), the state has instructed all districts to immediately constitute district task forces (DTFs) to identify undocumented immigrants and ensure strict enforcement of Inner Line Permit (ILP) provisions. The meeting was attended by senior police officers, including inspector generals and superintendents of police. "Statewide crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and ILP violations. A district task force will be immediately constituted in every district to carry out detection of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and ensure strict enforcement of the Inner Line Permit regime," Mithi said. The MHA had last month issued a 30-day deadline for all states and Union Territories to verify the identity and documentation of individuals suspected to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. Those failing to produce valid documents would be liable for deportation, officials said. It also instructed states to invoke their statutory powers to detect, detain and deport illegal immigrants. Rohingya man arrested in Tripura's Unakoti district: police
A Rohingya man was arrested at Kailashahar in Tripura's Unakoti district along with a man in whose house he was found, police said on Thursday. The Rohingya man has been identified as Noor Mustafa and the other arrested man as Abdul Wahid. 'We got secret information last night that a Myanmar national is hiding at Dhaliarkandi. A team of police conducted a raid at Wahid's house and arrested Noor Mustafa and the house owner. Some touts helped him. We are trying to trace them. We forwarded them to court today,' said a senior police officer. The police have found out that Mustafa and his family left Myanmar for Bangladesh in 2012. In 2019, he came to India and worked in Hyderabad. He was planning to go back to Bangladesh with the help of a tout. Arrests of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh have been common in Tripura, more so since the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government's fall in Dhaka last year following an uprising. Vigil has since been tightened along the 856-km-long border with Bangladesh, parts of which are still unfenced owing to local disputes. As per the police, 816 Bangladeshis, 79 Rohingya persons, and two Nigerians were arrested from January 1, 2024, to February 28 this year. As many as 483 of these arrests were made after August 5, 2024, when the Hasina government fell.
