Israel-Iran war: Mazagon Dock, GRSE, Bharat Dynamics, other defence stocks rally. Do you own any of these?

Defence stocks in India witnessed a sharp rally on Tuesday as the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran entered its fifth day, heightening geopolitical tensions. The Nifty India Defence Index climbed over 1.6% during the session, breaching the 9,000 mark.
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders share price emerged as the top performer on the index, surging more than 5%. Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers shares jumped over 4%, while Data Patterns (India) shares advanced more than 3%. Other major gainers included Bharat Dynamics, Cochin Shipyard, Solar Industries India, BEML, and Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL), which rose between 1% and 2%.
In contrast, Zen Technologies, Mishra Dhatu Nigam, and Astra Microwave Products shares traded marginally lower, bucking the broader trend.
The renewed investor interest in defence stocks was driven by expectations of increased defence spending and order inflows amid rising global security concerns. The escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict has intensified market anticipation of higher demand for defence equipment and services, analysts said.
Defence stocks had already gained traction last month following India's targeted military strikes on terrorist outfits in Pakistan under Operation Sindoor. While tensions between India and Pakistan have since de-escalated, the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict continues to underpin bullish sentiment in the sector.
The latest developments in the Middle East have further strengthened the outlook for India's defence stocks, with investors betting on sustained growth in defence orders and strategic investments.
However, analysts have flagged valuation concerns following the recent sharp rally in defence stocks.
'While defence stocks such as Garden Reach, Mazagon Dock, HAL, BEL, and BDL remain attractive from a long-term perspective, current valuations appear stretched. The recent uptrend is largely driven by sentiment and prevailing geopolitical narratives,' said Avinash Gorakshakar, Head of Research at Profitmart Securities.
He advised investors to consider accumulating these stocks with a long-term horizon of at least two years.

Microsoft launches probe into claims that Israel used its Azure cloud services to spy on Palestinians

Microsoft has launched an 'urgent' probe into allegations that the Israel military has used the company's technology to facilitate mass surveillance on Palestenians. According to a report by Guardian, the Microsoft investigation comes after the news outlet's earlier report that the Satya Nadella-led tech firm's Azure cloud platform was utlised to store a vast collection of everyday Palestinian mobile phone calls by the Israeli Unit 8200 spy agency. Microsoft in a statement said 'using Azure for the storage of data files of phone calls obtained through broad or mass surveillance of civilians in Gaza and the West Bank' would be prohibited by its terms of service. The investigation is being overseen by lawyers at the US firm Covington & Burlin. This is the second time Microsoft has launched an external probe against the Israeli military using its technology. The first enquiry was commissioned earlier this year to look into allegations that the Israeli military was using Microsoft's technology during its attacks on Gaza. In May, the company said it 'found no evidence to date' the Israeli military did not comply with its terms of service or used Azure 'to target or harm people' in Gaza. However, the recent report by Guardian apparently sent shockwaves among senior Microsoft employees about whether some of its Israel-based employees may have held back on information regarding how Unit 8200 uses Azure. According to Guardian's joint investigation with the Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 Magazine and the Hebrew-language outlet Local Call, Israel's Unit 8200 made use of a customised and segregated area within Azure and stored recordings of millions of calls made daily in Gaza and the West Bank. Since the report, Guardian said that Microsoft has been trying to assess what data Unit 8200 stores in Azure. Israel's offensive has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians, according to figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza which the United Nations considers reliable. The Israeli government's plans to expand the war have sparked an international outcry as well as domestic opposition.

India, South Korea resolve to set new industrial ambition in high-tech sectors

Agency: PTI New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI) India and South Korea on Saturday resolved to expand their strategic partnership by setting new 'industrial ambition" in the areas of semiconductor, defence, clean energy, and artificial intelligence. Ways to ramp up the overall bilateral cooperation figured prominently in talks between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his visiting South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Jaishankar and Hyun agreed to set new industrial ambitions, especially in high-tech sectors such as AI, semiconductors, clean energy, shipbuilding, and the defence industry. The ministers took stock of bilateral cooperation, including in the political, security, trade and economy, technological, and people-to-people domains, it said. In a social media post, Jaishankar described the talks as 'productive". 'Held productive discussions on advancing our bilateral cooperation in trade, manufacturing, maritime and people-to-people exchanges as well as new opportunities in AI, semiconductors, clean energy and defence," he said. Jaishankar said he and Hyun also exchanged perspectives on the Indo-Pacific region and contemporary global developments. 'Appreciated our deepening convergences and growing engagement as our Special Strategic Partnership completes 10 years," he added. In his opening remarks at the meeting, Jaishankar also thanked Seoul for its condemnation of the horrific April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The external affairs minister also made a mention of Seoul's support to an Indian parliamentary delegation that visited South Korea in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. 'You have been barely a month in the job (as the foreign minister), the fact that you are here literally a day after your National Day, and our National Day, says a lot really about the value we attach to the relationship," Jaishankar said. The India-South Korea ties have been on an upswing in the last few years, especially in the areas of trade and defence. The MEA said Jaishankar and Hyun reaffirmed the strong and growing 'special strategic partnership" between the two countries. The partnership is rooted in shared democratic values, mutual trust, shared economic interests, and commitment to regional and global peace and stability, it said. 'The ministers also shared their assessment on regional and global issues of common interest," the MEA said in a statement.
