Sophie Nyweide, former child actor known for 'Mammoth', dies at 24
Sophie Nyweide, a former child actor whose brief career in the late aughts to early 2010s included roles in films Mammoth , Noah and Bella , has died.
Nyweide died April 14 in her home state of Vermont, her family announced in a Legacy.com obituary published last week.
'Creative, athletic and wise beyond her years, Sophie accomplished so much in the time she danced upon earth,' her loved ones wrote. She was 24.
The obituary described Nyweide as a welcoming person who saw people other than relatives as family.
'Her death has left a hole in all,' the obituary continued. 'Sadness, loss, heartbreak and even anger is present for those who loved her and now will have to continue on with her laughter, infectious passion and zest – without those amazing blue eyes that could look directly into one's soul.'
The family's announcement did not disclose additional details about the actor's death, including a cause, but her loved ones implied that the actor had been taken advantage of, refused professional help and self-medicated to cope with undisclosed 'trauma and shame,' which led to her death.
The Bennington Police Department said in a statement shared with The LA Times that it is investigating Nyweide's death as a 'possible unintentional overdose' and will conduct an investigation, including final autopsy and toxicology reports.
Police and rescue personnel responded to a 911 call about an unresponsive female early April 14, according to the statement.
Officials arrived to a 'wooded area along the banks of the Roaring Branch River' where first responders 'attempted life saving measures' on Nyweide, who was pronounced dead at the scene less than an hour later.
The person who called 911 was present with Nyweide at the time of her death and is cooperating with investigators, the statement said. Investigators will reportedly consider a range of possible causes, including foul play.
Nyweide was reportedly in the early stages of pregnancy when she died, according to several outlets citing her death certificate.
Nyweide was born July 8, 2000, in Burlington, Vermont, and enjoyed a varied career that spanned from her screen debut in the 2006 film Bella to a 2015 episode of ABC's beloved social experiment series What Would You Do?
Nyweide was inspired by her mother, actor Shelly Gibson ( All My Children , Blood & Oil ), to pursue a career in Hollywood.
By the time she was 11, Nyweide appeared in a handful of films including the 2009 multilingual and country-hopping film Mammoth . In the film, directed by Lukas Moodysson, Nyweide appeared as the onsceen eight-year-old daughter of Michelle Williams and Gael García Bernal.
Nyweide also shared the screen with James Franco and Julianne Nicholson in the 2010 feature Shadows & Lies , and appeared alongside Jessica Alba and Chris Messina as an elementary school student in An Invisible Sign .
Nyweide's credits also include films And Then Came Love , Noah and Margot At The Wedding , TV series Law & Order and shorts Mistakes Were Made and Born Again .
'She seemed happiest on a movie set, becoming someone else,' her family said in the obituary, adding productions were a 'safe place for her.'
The obituary continued: 'She was an eager adventurer and picked up the customs and even languages of any place she visited. She made friends easily at her schools and saw the good in everyone.'
Before she became an actor, Nyweide took inspiration from her older brother and found a knack for snowboarding. She started competing in the sport at age five, according to her obituary.
'A life ended too soon. May it not be in vain,' the obituary said. 'May we all learn from her brief life on earth and do better. Yes, we must all protect our children and do better.'
The family asks that donations be made in Nyweide's name to RAINN, an organisation dedicated to supporting survivors of sexual violence. – Los Angeles Times.

(File pic) PETALING JAYA : Eight people, including a woman known as 'Bella', changed their pleas from guilty to not guilty at the Johor Bahru magistrates' court today on charges of extorting, confining and threatening to kill a man in Plentong last April. Bella, whose real name is Nuredrianna Balqqisyh Anabella Norazman, 22, and the other seven recorded the change in plea on three charges before magistrate A Shaarmini today, Bernama reported. The other seven are Aqmal Hafifi Mustafa Kamal, 25, Ahmad Rushdi Jumadi, 23, Nur Shafiq Abdullah, 25, Haikal Zulkarnain, 19, Amierul Hakim Shamsuri, 23, Danish Hakim Kamaruddin, 20, and Syamsul Hamiziey Saiful Razali, 19. On the first charge, they were jointly accused of criminal intimidation by issuing death threats to Faris Syahmi Ridzwan, 22. On the second charge, the eight, along with two others still at large, were accused of extortion by threatening Faris to pay them RM3,000 or face further assault by the group. This allegedly led to the victim handing over RM650 in cash and the key to his motorcycle to one of the accused, Amierul. On the third charge, all the accused, along with two others still at large, were jointly accused of wrongfully confining the victim. All eight had pleaded guilty before magistrate Atifah Hazimah Wahab to the three charges on April 25. In separate proceedings before magistrate Nur Fatin Farid today, the seven men also changed their pleas to not guilty on a fourth charge of voluntarily causing hurt to the same victim, along with one other accomplice still at large. The seven men had pleaded guilty to the fourth charge before Atifah on April 25. All the alleged offences were said to have been committed at a flat in Plentong, Masai, between 10pm and 4am, from April 18 to 19. The first three charges were framed under Sections 506, 384 and 342 of the Penal Code respectively, while the fourth charge under Section 323 of the same Code. The offences carry penalties of imprisonment of up to 10 years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction. Syamsul was represented by counsel Nurul Nadia Yunos, Amierul by T Haressh, Aqmal by Khairulazwad Sariman and Rushdi by Syahmi Nawawi. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutors Nik Noratini Nik Azman and Nur Fatihah Nizam. Both Shaarmini and Fatin fixed July 17 for the next mention of the case, submission of documents, and for the accused who are yet to be represented to appoint counsel.

Rumah Bonda founder's final appeal against 12-year sentence in child abuse case set for August 14
PUTRAJAYA, June 3 — The Court of Appeal has set August 14 to hear the final appeal by the founder of the shelter home, Rumah Bonda, against her conviction and 12-year sentence for the neglect and abuse of Bella, a 13-year-old girl with Down syndrome. On the same day, the court will also hear Siti Bainun Ahd Razali's application to adduce new evidence in her appeal. Her lawyer, Haijan Omar, confirmed the hearing date to Bernama following the case management before Court of Appeal deputy registrar Nurul Nadia Azman today. Siti Bainun, 33, is seeking to adduce fresh evidence in the form of a police report linked to Ismanira Abdul Manaf, the mother of autistic boy, Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, who was reported missing before his body was found at a stream in Damansara Damai in December 2023. The evidence is based on allegations regarding this case in a police report made by Ismanira on July 25, last year. Siti Bainun is also seeking permission to summon Ismanira to give further evidence, as well as to allow her to recall a prosecution witness for further examination about the police report. Ismanira and her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, are currently on trial in the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court for charges of neglecting their autistic son, with the ruling scheduled on July 21. On May 3, 2023, the Sessions Court sentenced Siti Bainun to 12 years' imprisonment after finding her guilty of two charges of neglect and abuse of Bella. The court rejected her application for a stay of execution pending appeal, and she was immediately sent to Kajang Prison to begin serving her sentence. In addition to her prison term, the court ordered Siti Bainun to sign a five-year good behaviour bond with one surety and a RM5,000 deposit and perform 200 hours of community service within six months of her release from prison. The High Court upheld her conviction and sentence on May 2, 2024. Siti Bainun was charged with neglect and abuse, causing physical and emotional injury to the victim at a condominium unit in Wangsa Maju between February and June 2021. — Bernama

#SHOWBIZ: Bella's son Ayden completes 400m sea swim, receives praise from Syed Saddiq
KUALA LUMPUR: Actress and singer Bella Astillah's 8-year-old son, Ayden Adrean Aliff, has showcased remarkable swimming prowess by completing a 400-metre sea swim after only a week of training. Ayden participated in the Langkawi Swim Fest at Tanjung Rhu yesterday, much to the surprise and immense pride of his mother. Bella, 31, shared her astonishment and joy on Instagram, saying, "Ayden is amazing, after only a week of training he has been able to swim 400 metres in the sea." She added that his achievement left her speechless, noting, "He gave his all, and reached the finishing line safe and sound." The feat was particularly significant for Bella, who admitted to being traumatised by a past experience while swimming in the sea. "I thank God that Ayden is not like me, and he has proven himself to be brave and competitive," said Bella, who shed tears of joy upon hearing about her son's successful swim. Bella and her former husband, Singaporean singer and actor Aliff Aziz, have two children: Ayden and five-year-old Ara Adreanna Aliff.
