PETALING JAYA : Eight people, including a woman known as 'Bella', changed their pleas from guilty to not guilty at the Johor Bahru magistrates' court today on charges of extorting, confining and threatening to kill a man in Plentong last April.
Bella, whose real name is Nuredrianna Balqqisyh Anabella Norazman, 22, and the other seven recorded the change in plea on three charges before magistrate A Shaarmini today, Bernama reported.
The other seven are Aqmal Hafifi Mustafa Kamal, 25, Ahmad Rushdi Jumadi, 23, Nur Shafiq Abdullah, 25, Haikal Zulkarnain, 19, Amierul Hakim Shamsuri, 23, Danish Hakim Kamaruddin, 20, and Syamsul Hamiziey Saiful Razali, 19.
On the first charge, they were jointly accused of criminal intimidation by issuing death threats to Faris Syahmi Ridzwan, 22.
On the second charge, the eight, along with two others still at large, were accused of extortion by threatening Faris to pay them RM3,000 or face further assault by the group.
This allegedly led to the victim handing over RM650 in cash and the key to his motorcycle to one of the accused, Amierul.
On the third charge, all the accused, along with two others still at large, were jointly accused of wrongfully confining the victim.
All eight had pleaded guilty before magistrate Atifah Hazimah Wahab to the three charges on April 25.
In separate proceedings before magistrate Nur Fatin Farid today, the seven men also changed their pleas to not guilty on a fourth charge of voluntarily causing hurt to the same victim, along with one other accomplice still at large.
The seven men had pleaded guilty to the fourth charge before Atifah on April 25.
All the alleged offences were said to have been committed at a flat in Plentong, Masai, between 10pm and 4am, from April 18 to 19.
The first three charges were framed under Sections 506, 384 and 342 of the Penal Code respectively, while the fourth charge under Section 323 of the same Code. The offences carry penalties of imprisonment of up to 10 years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Syamsul was represented by counsel Nurul Nadia Yunos, Amierul by T Haressh, Aqmal by Khairulazwad Sariman and Rushdi by Syahmi Nawawi.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutors Nik Noratini Nik Azman and Nur Fatihah Nizam.

Not in e-Kasih? Johor has a new affordable home plan for you

ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 5 — Low-income earners in Johor who are not listed under the federal e-Kasih database can now own their first home. Johor Housing and Local Government chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the state government will expand its Projek Rumah Prihatin Johor (RPJ) to all 56 state constituencies in August. 'The move was taken following feedback and complaints that there are still many low-income earners who are not listed in the e-Kasih programme and have failed to be eligible for the state government's affordable housing schemes,' he said. He said the RPJ was developed to support those ineligible for existing federal and state housing programmes. Mohd Jafni said the RPJ was first launched as a pilot in the Machap and Bukit Permai constituencies. Following its success, the state is ready to roll it out statewide. Under the RPJ, homes will be built on land owned by the applicants or their families, with supporting proof via promissory letters. Buyers can choose between a two-bedroom unit priced at RM66,000 or a three-bedroom unit at RM86,000. Both options include a RM30,000 subsidy from the Johor government. Applicants must cover the remaining cost – RM36,000 or RM56,000 depending on the house type – via a loan. 'These homes will be completed within seven months,' said Mohd Jafni. He said the programme is aimed at those who have land but cannot afford to build their own homes. 'Applications are currently open and can be made at the respective district office. 'The approval process only takes three months if all the applicants' conditions are met,' he said.

NFA after RM6.7mil lost to coffee vending machine investment scheme

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the deputy public prosecutor's office decided that no charges for fraud-related offences would be filed. PETALING JAYA : Investigations into a coffee vending machine investment scheme that purportedly led to investors losing some RM6.7 million has been classified by prosecutors as requiring no further action (NFA). Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said 101 reports had been lodged over the scheme from January to April, with complainants saying they lost a total of RM6.7 million. He said the victims were given detailed explanations and representations about the investment scheme, with the promise of high returns, Bernama reported. They then joined the scheme and made payments to the bank accounts with which they were provided. 'The victims were unsure whether the investment was legitimate. Initially, they received some returns, but over time, the payments stopped,' said Hussein. While the cases were probed for cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, the deputy public prosecutor's office eventually decided that no charges for fraud-related offences would be filed. Hussein advised the complainants to pursue civil action, particularly to contest any breach of the agreement they had signed and to recover their investments. He urged the public to be wary of investment schemes that promise quick profits.

S'wak High Court dismisses applications by Petronas to postpone, stay Petros suit

National oil company Petronas called on the bank guarantee last October after demanding payment of RM28,136,403.08 from Petros for gas supplied. PETALING JAYA : The Sarawak High Court has dismissed two applications filed by national oil company Petronas to postpone or stay the hearing of a suit brought by Petroleum Sarawak Bhd, the state's sole gas aggregator. Judicial commissioner Faridz Gohim Abdullah rejected the applications and confirmed that the case will be heard on June 11, the Dayak Daily reported. Faridz ruled that no special circumstances had been presented to justify a stay or adjournment. 'The hearing of the case should not be further delayed,' he was quoted as saying. Petros is suing to restrain Petronas from utilising funds of RM7.95 million received under a bank guarantee previously given by Petros in respect of the supply of gas. Petros contends that Petronas's demand for payment under the bank guarantee was 'unconscionable' or 'unlawful'. In April, Faridz dismissed an application by Petronas to suspend all legal proceedings on grounds that Petronas had failed to show the existence of any sufficiently exceptional or compelling grounds to stay the proceedings. In October last year, Petronas had called on the bank guarantee after demanding payment of RM28,136,403.08 from Petros for gas supplied. Petros filed its suit against Petronas on Oct 15, 2024. The Sarawak state-owned oil company simultaneously sought an ex-parte interim injunction to restrain Petronas from pursuing the payment and receiving monies under the bank guarantee. However, Faridz ruled that Petros's injunction application had become 'redundant' as Maybank Islamic Bhd had already paid Petronas on the guarantee.
