NFA after RM6.7mil lost to coffee vending machine investment scheme

PETALING JAYA : Investigations into a coffee vending machine investment scheme that purportedly led to investors losing some RM6.7 million has been classified by prosecutors as requiring no further action (NFA).
Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said 101 reports had been lodged over the scheme from January to April, with complainants saying they lost a total of RM6.7 million.
He said the victims were given detailed explanations and representations about the investment scheme, with the promise of high returns, Bernama reported.
They then joined the scheme and made payments to the bank accounts with which they were provided.
'The victims were unsure whether the investment was legitimate. Initially, they received some returns, but over time, the payments stopped,' said Hussein.
While the cases were probed for cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, the deputy public prosecutor's office eventually decided that no charges for fraud-related offences would be filed.
Hussein advised the complainants to pursue civil action, particularly to contest any breach of the agreement they had signed and to recover their investments.
He urged the public to be wary of investment schemes that promise quick profits.

None of the other drivers were injured in the crash. Police are investigating the case under reckless or dangerous driving provisions. Ismail urged witnesses or anyone with information about the crash to come forward to assist in the investigation. Several hours earlier, five people — including four siblings — were killed in a separate accident at Km7 of Jalan Jerantut-Maran in Jerantut.

IWK said its operations team was deployed immediately after the incident to assess the situation and implement safety measures. The affected area has been barricaded. In a statement today, IWK said the investigation revealed signs of illegal chemical discharge from a nearby factory, based on the presence of the unusual gas in the sewer network. It said it has notified the environment department and the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), and requested their assistance in identifying the source of the chemical spill. Although the sewer line remains operational with no blockages or structural damage, the blast displaced a manhole cover and damaged a road culvert. The manhole has since been temporarily secured. A CCTV inspection of the sewer system will be conducted once clearance is given by the relevant authorities, it said. Penang fire and rescue department assistant director John Sagun Francis confirmed that no injuries were reported. The single explosion occurred at about 11.30am along Lengkok Perindustrian Bukit Minyak 2, causing damage to the road. Issues over Petros nothing to do with Petronas layoffs, says Fadillah
Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said Petronas is relooking its entire operation because of the decline in crude oil prices. KUCHING : Petroliam Nasional Bhd's (Petronas) move to trim its workforce stems from global challenges and is not connected to the national oil firm's issues with Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros). Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said Petronas's restructuring plan is necessary amid the decline in crude oil prices. He said he plans to meet with the company to get more details of the exercise. 'That (the decline in crude oil prices) is why Petronas has to relook its entire operation. I'm planning a meeting with them to get a briefing on the matter and to ensure that the number of layoffs can be reduced, if not avoided,' he told reporters attending the Aidiladha sacrificial event at Taman Hussein Mosque here today. On June 5, Petronas president and CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz said the national oil firm is cutting 10% of its workforce to cope with challenging operating conditions, particularly because of falling crude prices. He said the number of staff involved in the downsizing process stands at about 5,000, and those affected will be notified in stages next year. On May 21, the federal and state governments reached an understanding on matters involving Petronas and Petros. According to the joint declaration, Petronas will continue its functions, activities, responsibilities and obligations entrusted to the company in Malaysia under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 and its regulations. Any agreements and arrangements between Petronas and its subsidiaries with third parties for the purpose of liquefied natural gas sales from upstream operations through to LNG exports to foreign parties remain unaffected. A media statement by the Prime Minister's Office following the joint declaration said all relevant federal and state laws relating to gas distribution in Sarawak are to co-exist and be respected by all parties.
