Sports Star DJ Carey Faked Cancer Using iPhone Cord To Scam Thousands, Even Tricked A Billionaire
Carey, 54, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of deception at Dublin's Criminal Courts of Justice, admitting he posed as a cancer patient between 2014 and 2022 to solicit money under false pretences. A now-infamous image allegedly sent to victims shows Carey lying on a bed with an iPhone charging cable taped under his nose, mimicking a nasal oxygen tube, as per the news portal.
Regarded as hurling's first true superstar, Carey's legacy includes five All-Ireland titles and nine All-Star awards. But behind the sporting glory was a troubling financial story. In 2011, he faced a court order to repay 7.3 million pounds to Allied Irish Bank, a debt later controversially reduced to just 51,000 pounds in 2018.
According to Irish Times, despite claims of serious health issues unrelated to cancer, Carey's deception shocked the nation. He was originally facing 21 fraud charges, and a trial involving 28 prosecution witnesses was scheduled. However, Carey pleaded guilty, and his sentencing is now set for October 29.
Carey remains free on bail until sentencing. His legal team acknowledged his heart-related health issues, while the court noted his history of high-profile financial difficulties.
This case has drawn comparisons to the infamous Belle Gibson scandal, in which the Australian wellness influencer falsely claimed she had cancer to gain fame and financial support before being fined over $400,000 for deception. Carey's dramatic fall from grace marks one of the most disturbing sports scandals in recent Irish history.

Man Charged With Setting Fire To Synagogue In Australia
Agency: AFP Last Updated: A man was arrested for setting fire to a Melbourne synagogue during Shabbat dinner. Australian PM Anthony Albanese and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack. A man suspected of setting fire to an Australian synagogue as worshippers ate dinner inside has been arrested and charged, police said Sunday. The 34-year-old allegedly set the front door of a busy Melbourne synagogue ablaze on Friday night as around 20 people ate dinner in observance of Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest. The attack has drawn strong condemnation from the prime ministers of both Australia and Israel. Victoria state police charged the man with a string of offences, including reckless conduct endangering life. 'Detectives will continue to examine the intent and ideology of the person charged to determine if the incident is in fact terrorism," police said in a statement. The worshippers escaped unscathed through the back of the synagogue before firefighters doused the blaze. Police said they were yet to find a link between the two other incidents targeting Jewish residents in Melbourne on Friday night. A group of about 20 protesters swarmed an Israeli-owned restaurant, interrupting the dinner service as they chanted at patrons. The protesters allegedly flipped over tables and smashed a window, according to local media. Cars were set on fire and daubed with antisemitic graffiti in a third incident in another part of the city. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Saturday condemned the synagogue attack as a 'cowardly" act of violence. 'And the fact that people were having a peaceful dinner, and (were) disrupted by this act of violence could have had catastrophic consequences," he said in a statement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was 'reprehensible", while decrying the restaurant incident as a 'violent assault" by 'pro-Palestinian rioters". 'We demand that the Australian government take all action to deal with the rioters to the fullest extent of the law and prevent similar attacks in the future," he said. Jewish neighbourhoods in Melbourne and Sydney have in recent months been hit by a wave of antisemitic vandalism. Masked arsonists firebombed a different Melbourne synagogue in December, prompting the government to create a federal task force targeting antisemitism. Australia police charge man over alleged arson on Melbourne synagogue in latest antisemitic attack
A man was detained and charged by Australian police on Saturday in connection with an alleged arson attack on Melbourne synagogue with people inside the building, in what is being seen as the latest series of incidents targeting Australia's Jewish community. The synagogue, situated in east Melbourne, saw no injuries to the 20 people present inside the premises who escaped the fire on Friday night. Fire fighters extinguished the blaze in the capital of Victoria state. Police said the blaze was lit at the entrance of the synagogue. The 34-year-old suspect, a resident of Sydney, capital of neighbouring New South Wales was arrested by the counterterrorism detectives late on Saturday and has been charged with offences, including criminal damage by fire, police said. The man has not been identified by the police and is due to face court on Sunday. I condemn outright the vile arson attack targeting Jews in Melbourne's historic and oldest synagogue on the Sabbath, and on an Israeli restaurant where people had come to enjoy a meal together. It is intolerable that in 2025, we are still faced with the chilling image of an… — יצחק הרצוג Isaac Herzog (@Isaac_Herzog) July 5, 2025 A police statement said 'The man allegedly poured a flammable liquid on the front door of the building and set it on fire before fleeing the scene.' Antisemitism has no place in Australia. Those responsible for the shocking acts in Melbourne last night must face the full force of the law and my Government will provide all necessary support toward this effort. — Anthony Albanese (@AlboMP) July 5, 2025 Investigative authorities are also inquiring whether the synagogue fire incident was linked to a disturbance on Friday night at an Israeli restaurant in Melbourne, where a person had been arrested for hindering police. The attack on Friday, one of the several antisemitic incidents reported in Australia, came after seven months when another synagogue in Melbourne was targeted and set ablaze by arsonists that left one person injured and widespread damage was reported. The latest antisemitic incidents in Australia saw a multifold rise since the start of the Israel-Gaza war in October 2023. Israeli President Isaac Herzog has condemned the arson attack on Melbourne Synagogue and stated 'condemn outright the vile arson attack targeting Jews in Melbourne's historic and oldest synagogue on the Sabbath, and on an Israeli restaurant where people had come to enjoy a meal together.' Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Saturday that the arson attack was shocking and those responsible should face the law's full force. 'My Government will provide all necessary support toward this effort,' Albanese stated.
