Bukit Aman takes over Ipoh murder case, cites organised crime link

IPOH - The Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT) of Bukit Aman has taken over the murder investigation of a 57-year-old man who was found with stab and gunshot wounds at a residence in Taman Tasek Damai, here on June 24.
Perak Police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the decision was made after investigations revealed a connection to an organised crime syndicate.

"Initially, it was treated as a local crime, but further investigation revealed cross-border elements involving organised crime," he told reporters after officiating at the Perak Police Blood Donation Programme, held in conjunction with the 218th Police Day here today.
Noor Hisam said the victim's 31-year-old son, who had been previously detained to assist in the investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code, was released on police bail following the expiry of his remand on Tuesday. - BERNAMA

'Op Metal': MACC Raids Two E-waste Recycling Plants In Penang
BUTTERWORTH, July 15 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today raided two electronic waste (e-waste) recycling factories suspected of bribing enforcement officers, leading to significant tax revenue losses. The coordinated raids, conducted at 9 am under Op Metal, targeted one factory on Jalan Perusahaan Perai 3 in the Perai Industrial Area and another in Bukit Minyak, Bukit Mertajam. The action follows the recent exposure of a scrap metal smuggling syndicate, in which scrap metal was falsely declared as machinery and other items not subject to the government's 15 percent export tax. Now in its second day, Op Metal is being led by MACC's Special Operations Division in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Inland Revenue Board (IRB) and Bank Negara Malaysia under a multi-agency task force. MACC's Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad secured both premises, documented 25 local and foreign workers, and detained a man in his 50s, believed to be the chief operating officer, for further questioning and document retrieval. Meanwhile, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that 13 additional locations across Penang, Kedah, Johor and the Klang Valley were raided today. 'MACC is now identifying those colluding with the syndicate that smuggled scrap metal and e-waste through Port Klang and Penang Port, causing an estimated tax loss of over RM950 million over the past six years,' he said. Earlier, Bernama reported that the MACC had launched a major crackdown on scrap metal smuggling syndicates operating across five states, believed to have bribed enforcement officers to evade taxes, resulting in over RM950 million in revenue losses for the government. -- BERNAMA

Man nabbed for allegedly threatening DBKL officers with parang
KUALA LUMPUR: A man has been arrested after brandishing a weapon at DBKL officers during a raid here. The incident occurred in Desa Pandan during Ops Roboh, an operation targeting illegal structures along footpaths. "At 11.17am on Tuesday (July 15) the suspect approached with a parang and hurled insults at officers. Sarawak customs seize RM1 mln Doraemon-shaped ecstasy pills
KUCHING: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department in Sarawak successfully intercepted a drug smuggling attempt involving ecstasy pills shaped like the popular cartoon character Doraemon. The pills, worth RM1 million, were concealed inside Vitamin C bottles. Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya stated that the operation led to the seizure of 5.23 kilogrammes of the illegal substance during an inspection at a courier company in Sibu on June 20. Surveillance conducted over three days showed no one came forward to claim the suspicious package. Further examination revealed 12 plastic bottles labelled as 'Vitamin C 1000 tablets' containing aluminium packets filled with the Doraemon-shaped pills. The drugs, believed to be ecstasy, were smuggled via air courier from Peninsular Malaysia. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries severe penalties, including the death sentence or life imprisonment with a minimum of 15 strokes of the cane. – Bernama
