Katy Perry's viral, quirky 'Lifetimes' tour has hits—and misses

Time Out2 days ago

I saw astronaut Katy Perry kiss the sky… and I liked it? Sorta.
Actually, I'm kind of torn on my thoughts after seeing Perry's 'Lifetimes' tour in Las Vegas. That's because I was both equally amused and entertained as I was bewildered and frustrated by it. For a lot of reasons.
Now granted, I'm comparing it to her Resorts World residency a few years ago, 'Play,' a production she referred to as Honey, I Shrunk the Kids meets Pee-wee's Playhouse. Yes, it was as odd as that sentence reads. Perry's performance found her singing out of an oversized toilet and dancing in a field of monster mushrooms with a lipsticked frog in a bikini.
So that's why, when tickets for 'Lifetime' landed in my lap from a friend, I was intrigued by the opportunity. The night started when a wicked windstorm launched a plastic bag into the air near the Luxor light beam as I walked to the show and, of course, fittingly ended with Perry closing her show with that opening lyric from 'Firework.'
Between those moments there was a lot going on. Perry was engaging and spoke to the audience quite a bit. Early on, she poked fun at herself in reference to the backlash from her recent Blue Origin spaceflight, saying she's the 'world's most hated icon.' Later on, Perry thanked the crowd 'for loving me despite all of my flaws.'
Her 'Lifetimes' tour, which is crisscrossing the globe through the end of the year in promotion of her album 143, has received a lukewarm reception, with some observers calling Perry a copycat. They note that her opening monologue mimics the one from Taylor Swift's 'Eras' tour and how the portion of Perry's show calling on the audience to scan a QR code and pick a song for her to sing is oh-too-similar to what Sabrina Carpenter has done.
But comparisons aside, Perry makes it her own with a five-act video game concept that involves her battling an AI robot. That's… not necessarily a good thing. The storyline is confusing but apparently Perry is half-human, half-machine (which explains the metallic costumes, cone bras and furry moon boots) and in a fight with a cyborg to save butterflies and spread love. It's The Matrix meets Star Wars. At one point, Perry even swings a red lightsaber to destroy her enemies.
The stage for 'Lifetimes' is designed in a figure eight pattern allowing her to get closer to the crowd. There is a lot of airtime as well with artists performing Cirque du Soleil-like acrobatics and Perry suspended by wires flying and flipping above the audience on four separate occasions, including when riding on the back of a butterfly while performing 'Roar.'
My history with Perry starts at the very beginning. I first heard her in 2008 performing songs off Teenage Dream at the New York-New York's long-closed Rok Vegas nightclub. Then, while working for Us Weekly, I covered the 'Waking Up in Vegas' singer whenever she hit town—including her bachelorette party with Rihanna and numerous appearances and award shows. I even witnessed one of her first flights (albeit above a stage, not into outer space) at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards.
And while the voice is different and some song arrangements have changed, the one constant from quirky Perry are the campy costumes and hit songs. At T-Mobile Arena, she performed 24 songs and judging from the devoted fans singing along, 'Lifetimes' works.

She continued: "At the hospital, the nurses and doctor went straight into action, more determined to find the cause of my blackout than to stitch up the hole punctured into my face by the rock. "I smiled wryly at them. 'You won't find anything.' I said with a woozy voice..." she added. She then wrote more about the ordeal in a Substack post where she detailed "absent" and "fainting spells" since she was little. Evangeline even revealed how she was checked for epilepsy before the doctors settling for a diagnosis of hypoglycemia without doing any tests. "For a good chunk of my life, I went with that – hypoglycemia. And Just Like That fans fume over huge character change as they slam show bosses for 'trying too hard' The actress then said that the cause of her blackouts remain a mystery. She went on: "I have come to believe that this 'checking out' is a result of my little soul reaching her limit of what she feels she can cope with in this life, and she 'leaves the building,' so to speak." Evangeline later penned: "That when she has had enough, when the pain becomes too great, the stresses beyond overwhelming, the shattered idealism crushing, my soul exits my body and returns to pure spirit." Fans flocked to the Instagram post, which promoted her full Substack post, to share their well wishes with Evangeline. "Oh my goodness Evangeline! I am sending you all of the healing energy in the world. Take it easy! We're all here for you," penned one. Another added: "Thank you so much for talking about this. Thinking of you." And a third wrote: "Hope you're feeling better and heal up quickly inside and out." Underneath the post, Lilly penned: "Thank you all for your beautiful well wishes." Evangeline's hospital dash and health update comes after she announced she was retiring from acting. Last year, after 20 years on screen, Evangeline said: "I am so filled with joy and contentment today as I live out my vision. "Praise God, I feel so grateful for my blessings. Stepping away from what seems like the obvious choice (wealth and fame) can feel scary at times, but stepping into your dharma replaces the fear with fulfillment." She then added: "I might return to Hollywood one day, but, for now, this is where I belong. "A new season has arrived, and I AM I AM HAPPY." 5 Evangeline shot to fame on Lost Credit: Alamy

The Desperate Housewives alum, 62, put her glowing complexion on display and looked rejuvenated as she headed for an appearance on Good Morning America. The actress — who's been working to re-establish her acting career six years after being involved in the Varsity Blues college admissions scandal — wowed in a flowing white coat with a white button-up and navy pants underneath. Her platinum blonde hair was elegantly swept into an updo, with a few strands softly framing her radiant face. Her youthful appearance led to speculation about whether she's undergone any recent facial cosmetic enhancements. has reached out to Huffman's representative for comment. She accessorized with large gold hoops. The actress appeared on GMA to discuss her role in 'The Thirteenth Wife: Escaping Polygamy', a two-part Lifetime movie set to premiere May 31 and June 1. Directed by Michael Nankin, it tells the true story of Rena Chynoweth, an American woman who was involved with a polygamist fundamentalist Mormon group known as the Church of the Lamb of God, led by Ervil LeBaron. Chynoweth is known for her involvement in the 1977 murder of Rulon C. Allred, the leader of another polygamist group. Six years after the Varsity Blues scandal led to her imprisonment, Huffman has been actively working to rebuild her career. Last year Huffman opened up about how the scandal has affected her, admitting it feels like her 'old life has died.' Huffman, who was at the time preparing to star in Hir in London's West End as the radical and liberated mother of a transgender son, discussed her comeback with The Guardian. The play marked Felicity's comeback to acting after she was imprisoned for 11 days in 2019, after bribing college officials $15,000 to fudge her daughter's SAT scores. Discussing how she feels about everyone in the audience knowing the guilty verdict of her trial, Felicity said: 'I walk into the room with it. I did it. It's black and white.' Felicity said she is 'still processing' how she is doing after the ordeal, but added that she feels 'grateful to be here' and is happy as long as her family are doing well. The publication reported that Felicity has 'barely worked' since she was jailed and reflecting on the change to her career, she said: 'I did a pilot for ABC recently that didn't get picked up. It's been hard.' Her youthful appearance led to speculation about whether she's undergone any recent facial cosmetic enhancements 'Sort of like your old life died and you died with it. I'm lucky enough to have a family and love and means, so I had a place to land.' Discussing the reaction she has had since the news of the scandal broke, Felicity said that while some people have been kind to her, others have not. One person who has supported her is American playwright David Mamet, who wrote an open letter about her incarceration. David suggested that Felicity should have received the Texas Verdict, which essentially means: not guilty, but don't do it again. Felicity said that is was 'kind and brave' of David to defend her, but she didn't admit whether she agreed with his verdict or not. In December 2023, Felicity finally broke her silence on the scandal, saying she felt she had 'no option' but to break the law. Felicity paid $30,000 in fines and spent 11 days in jail after being charged with fraud. She had paid Rick Singer $15,000 to alter her daughter Sophia's SAT scores in order to land her a place at college and was among a group of wealthy, famous parents swept up in the scandal. Actress Lori Loughlin was also jailed for paying for both her daughters to be accepted into USC. Lori and husband Mossimo Giuliani had their daughters masquerade as sports stars, propping them up on rowing machines to fudge applications that presented them as athletes. In her first public remarks outside of the courtroom, Felicity told ABC that she thought it was 'a joke' when FBI agents turned up at her mansion to arrest her. 'They came into my home, they woke my daughters up at gunpoint - again, nothing new to the black and brown community - then they put my hands behind my back and handcuffed me. 'I asked if I could get dressed. I thought it was a hoax. I literally turned to one of the FBI people in a flak jacket and a gun and I go "is this a joke?"' Felicity said she regretted the scheme but felt she had no choice at the time because Sophia, who she previously said has a learning disability, would not have been accepted otherwise. Sophia went on to study drama at Carnegie Mellon. 'It felt like I had to give my daughter a chance at a future. And so it was sort of like my daughter's future, which meant I had to break the law,' she said. 'I think I feel the people I owe a debt and an apology to is the academic community and to the students and the families that sacrifice and work really hard to get to where they are going legitimately.' Felicity and her husband William H. Macy hired Singer to help Sophia improve her scores in order to get into college. She claims the scheme was not obvious at first, but became plain when Singer told them Sophia would not be accepted into any schools without greasing the wheels. 'After a year, he started to say your daughter is not going to get into any of the colleges that she wants to.' 'And I believed him. And so when he slowly started to present the criminal scheme, it seems like - and I know this seems crazy at the time - but that was my only option to give my daughter a future.' 'And I know hindsight is 20/20 but it felt like I would be a bad mother if I didn't do it.' 'So - I did it,' she said. Sophia was unaware that her parents had paid for someone to alter her test answers after she completed the SATS. The scheme involved Singer paying off a handful of discreet SAT test supervisors who would inflate students' scores once they had completed the exam. Singer, the mastermind, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison in January 2023. After 16 months in federal prison, he was released in August 2024.

Conor McGregor offered comeback bare knuckle fight by former UFC star

The former dual-weight UFC champion has not fought since 2021, but one ex-UFC star is eager to go head-to-head with the Irishman in the ring Former UFC welterweight star Mike Perry has called for a bare knuckle showdown with Conor McGregor. The Irish fighter hasn't stepped into the cage since his brutal first-round loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021, but recent videos of him training suggest he's gearing up for a comeback. McGregor was due to make a return last year against Michael Chandler but withdrew from the clash after picking up an injury in training. Perry, on the other hand, has made quite a name for himself in BKFC - a promotion co-owned by McGregor - since leaving the UFC four years ago. ‌ The 33-year-old American debuted in bare-knuckle fighting in 2022 and has since racked up five impressive victories, remaining undefeated in the ring. ‌ His last bout was in professional boxing, where he lost to YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. He's yet to make a BKFC comeback after being jokimgly fired by McGregor. The 'Notorious' has often hinted at a BKFC fight, and Perry is more than ready to welcome the former dual-weight UFC champion into the ring. Keen to get back into action, 'Platinum' has challenged McGregor to get off his "a**." Speaking on the Pound 4 Pound Podcast with UFC legends Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo, he said: "Bare-knuckle is really fun and exciting, I'm 5-0 and I got a lot of credit over there, I'm the king of violence over there. ‌ "Conor's over there messing about. Get back in the ring and let's do something, Platinum Tequila vs Proper 12. Your whiskey dropped you, I'll drop you. Yeah (I would like to fight McGregor in BKFC), I would like to fight Jake (Paul) in bare-knuckle but he wouldn't do it, so we created Dirty Boxing." Back in March, McGregor hinted that he may be done with the UFC after stating that he was happy with everything he had accomplished inside the cage. 'I've got two fights on the contract, I'm in negotiations," he said at a BKFC event. "Last week something happened to me, I went to the White House and my heart bleeds for my country right now. So there's a lot of stuff going on back home, I'm happy with what I've done. There's something else for me that's in my gut right now and that's kind of where I'm going.'' That said, just moments later, when asked if he could fight and be president at the same time, the Irishman gave a quick response, replying: 'F*****g right I will, of course, are you crazy? That's part of why I want to do it! To be announced as the President of Ireland while having a fight? Imagine that. But for sure, hell yeah, hell yes.'
